Just read a great book called Life of Pi by Yann Martel.  Its been sitting on my shelf for about a year now and I just got to it.  It's a Canadian author so I don't know if anybody outside of Canada has heard of it. If you're looking for something different check it out.

So what's your favourite book?  I keep going back to Robinson Crusoe even tho its really a kids book.  It speaks to me somehow.  The Davinci Code was pretty awesome too.

I've read so many books in my life, it's hard to pick a favorite. I really like fiction that revolves around murder mysteries. I read this one book years ago because my girlfriend at the time told me it was really good. It was called Valentine. It was about a serial killer taking out all these chicks who had wronged him in college. It totally held my interest because it was written from different perspectives. Some of the chapters were about the women, and the other chapters were written from the killers point of view. They made a movie, which sucked major ass and didn't even begin to follow the original storyline. I hate when they ruin a good book by making a shitty movie.

But basically, I enjoy a good suspense/mystery type of book. And I like non-fiction too. I like reading biographies and true crime stories.

I read Life of Pi, first in English, then in Dutch. So, yes, this book made it also outside of Canada. I liked it but wouldn't call it my favorite. One of the most enjoyable books I read is called 'the time traveller's wife' I forgot who wrote it. It follows the life of a woman, from girl to old lady, who is involved with a man that keeps flashing through different times. So he appears in present, then moves to the past, and then to her future again, and keeps looking for this love of his life. I know, it all sounds quite fague and unreal (well, yes, time travelling isn't particularly realistic), but I think it makes a good read.

Actor...i have so many books that have been my dear friends  .......

The first one that comes to my mind is "The lover" by Marguerite Duras. Then Gabriel Garcia Marquez's "Gabriela" .

    Paulo Coelho "The alchimist".

Milan Kundera "The unbearabable lightness of the being"

Umberto Eco " The name of the Rose"

Antoine de Saint-Exupery "The little prince".

    Herman Hesse "Siddharta"

I found myself re-reading them very often.......

SL: don't know this book at all but I'll look for it.
hottips: I read Wizard's First Rule ages ago during my SF/Fantasy phase. Cool Book!
TravelGirl: Thanks for reading my blog. Glad to hear that Canadian writers are getting recognition!  I don't know 'the time traveler's wife' but I know a play called 'Ten Times Two' by David Belke that sounds pretty similar....now with plays I am much more well-read LOL!

gingersoul: Finally! a girl after my own heart! I've been feeling pretty dumb opening a topic about books, and then not knowing any of the titles LOL.  I have read all of these books except "The Lover". 'Siddharta' is one of my favourite books. Such a simple story, beautifully told.
  • gingersoul said on Jun 09, 2007....

I love Siddharta for the same reason..ist simple yet so deep....

I am pleasantly impressed that you have also read Eco and Kundera....and who in this earth can not read at least twice that small wonder of "The Little Prince?...;-0

ginger: I read "The Name of the Rose" after seeing the movie. I loved the movie but some things were confusing.  They made much more sense in the book.

SoftyQ: Thanks for stopping by my blog!  How can you not love Dr. Seuss!! At one time I memorised the entire "Fox in Sox" and used it as a vocal warm-up before going on stage.  "I cannot blab this blibber-blubber, my tongue isn't made of rubber!" Great Stuff!

I don't have just one but many and they are in a series. The first one is the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. I loved thosed books.

The other one is The Repairman Jack series by F. Paul Wilson. Very good reads in my opinion.

The Mists of Avalon, Marion Zimmer Bradley

    The Red Tent, Anita Diamant

    The Group, Mary McCarthy

    The Harry Potter books

The Crimson Petal and the White, by Michael Faber

    I can't pick just one!
  • Actorguy said on Jun 09, 2007....

kate: Another Cauck! Thanks for reading my blog. I'll check them both out (good thing we have a good library here!). Who am I to argue with Oprah!

gena: I must confess I'm not a big Stephan King fan. Loved 'The Shining' but so many of his books seem just dumb - like 'Pet Semetary' - yuck!  Haven't heard of the Repairman Jack series but I will check it out.

Eilan: Hi!  I think I've read everything that Marion Zimmer Bradley wrote!  'The Mists of Avalon' was a terrific book.  My daughter convinced me to start reading 'Harry Potter' and now I love them all.  Don't know the others though.

Hey!  I just noticed that I'm on the Feature Page! Woohoo!  How does that happen? (musta been a slow news day!)

I read Life of Pi a long time ago.  My memory isn't the greatest, and I read so many books, but I think I remember that one.  Isn't that the one about the tiger?  Isn't that the one that has the tragic alternate ending that is the real truth?  If that's the story I'm thinking of, it ends very sad.

I'm currently in the middle of listening to an audio book of Clan of the Cave Bear.  It's very interesting but seems childish at the same time.  I'd be inclined to name it Supergirl in the land of the Male Chauvinists.  For one thing, it is telling us that Neanderthal males had the right to beat up and rape all little 10 year old girls, whose duty was to submit to that kind of treatment without protest.  Bloody face, busted eye, raped body, now get back to work and be sure to be available for more of the same tomorrow.

Some of my favorite books are Lord of the Rings, Don Quixote, Brothers Karamazov, War and Peace, and way too many more to remember.

My favorite book - A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving.
My favorite kids book - Click, Clack, Moo - Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin.  lol - I teach preschool so I have to have a favorite kids book.  The story is about cows that have a typewriter and they use it to try to get the farmer to give them electric blankets.  The farmer refuses.  Duck carries the ultimatums back and forth.  It's cute.  .............I need to get out more and away from kids.  I'm too excited about a children's book.  LOL!

My favorite book of all time.  Wow.  thats a good question.  I really liked a book called "The Ugly Duckling".  I know what your saying and no its not the childrens classic.  Although I loved that too as a child.  Its by Iris Johanson.  Suspense Thriller.  Really really good.  I recommend it highly.  It was one of those books that once I picked it up.  I had to find time to make to the end so I see what happens.
  • Actorguy said on Jun 10, 2007....
sweet_cookie: Thanks for reading my blog and I'm very glad that you're still with us! In high school, I was dragged, kicking and screaming, to Wuthering Heights and To Kill a Mockingbird. I was very surprised to learn that I loved them.  Those books really started me reading too.
ifbno7: I read the whole Clan of the Cave Bear series and really loved them.  Tried the big Russians (War and Peace and Anna Karinina) but they just weren't my cup of tea.
silver: never read the Dumas classic but I will get to it someday.
fearing: I was wondering when someone would mention John Irving! I love them all and Cider House Rules is my favourite.  The title Click, Clack, Moo....really cracked me up.  Maybe I can read it to my grandson!
Devin: I know I've read some Iris Johanson, but I can't recall the titles.  I read suspense/thrillers pretty often.
  • fearing said on Jun 10, 2007....
Actorguy- You will LOVE Click, Clack, Moo!  Please do take the time to read it to your grandson.  He will enjoy it.  There is a page that says "Duck was a neutral party, so he brought the ultimatum to the cows.".   I think that is hilarious!  There is a 2nd addition to it called "Giggle, Giggle, Quack"  about the same duck and a pencil.
John Irving is great.  Have you read the one called something like a 100 and something pound marriage?  I can't remember the exact title.  I was halfway through that book before I realized they were wife swapping!  I thought I was just being blonde and couldn't keep the characters straight!  lol!  That was a shocker!  Changed the whole story........

I have to say Richard Bach all around is a great author.  I will lend you some of his books, like Illusions that DestinyDiva mentioned.  Very thinky books that keep you turning pages.  Jonathan Livingston Seagull is a great quick read, too.  I liked One and the Bridge across forever too.

I also love Maeve Binchy....not thinky books, but something about her style and choice of words is captivating.

I definately think your grandson will love Click Clack Moo from what Fearing said!  We will have to look into them :)

I liked Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenence too.  Interesting book, that was.

Lately I seem to read a lot of picture books.  Lots of pointing and page turning, forwards and backwards, trying to find things my son recognizes.  I can't wait until the actual books (like Click Clack Moo) that can be read make sense to him.  I can only point out one bannana and two socks, three balls, etc, for so long!

  • Actorguy said on Jun 11, 2007....
fearing: just googled it and its called The 158-pound Marriage. I had never heard of it but it sounds good. So far I've liked all of his books except maybe Son of the Circus.

Sarafina: I know you like Maeve Binchy cause your house is full of her books. I think I was supposed to read Johnathan Livingstone Seagull in high school but only did the Coles Notes LOL.

In case anyone is still reading this blog and is confused, Sarafina is my niece and the grandson I talk about is her son.....never mind...its complicated.

hottips4u and silver: The first few books in Anne Rice's 'Vampire' series. By the time I got to Queen of the Damned they were getting too weird for me! Piers Anthony is one of the giants in the SF/Fantasy genre.  I loved the incarnations of immortality series. I wanted to read more but eventually, I guess, you run out of Immortals LOL.
  • silverwhisper said on Jun 12, 2007....

I'm really liking John Moore - I just finished two books of his, A Fate Worse than Dragons and The Unhandsome Prince. They're fantasies with a sort of fairy-tale twist. I mean, just why did someone lock Repunzel up in a tower anyway?
  • bafflegab said on Jun 18, 2007....
Hi Actorguy. I like to read, but I'm more into books like "the wreak of the mary deary" By Hammond Inns and "The day of the triffeds". That kind of stuff.
  • hottips4u said on Jun 18, 2007....
Like I have said to all; I like Goodkind, Anthony, and Rice. But there are so many others of which I have read and liked; some of which I have heard of and would like to read.

There are the classics of which most everyone has at least heard of:
Harper Lee, Alexandre Dumas, John Irving, F.Scott Fitzgerald,  Louisa May Alcott, Nathanial Hawthorne, S.E Hinton... the list goes on.

I have but one question...Of all the authors listed and discussed, why is it that I have not seen hide nor hair of one of the best authors I have come across...Danielle Steel? Is she not worthy of discussion? I think she is... some of my favorites include:  Malice, Changes, and Message From Nam. Anyone care to comment on any of those?

Oh yeah, and could anyone tell me the authors' name of a pretty recent book by the name of 'Twilight'. I have heard that it was good, but I could find it easier if I knew the author.

    jessi

  • Expendable said on Jun 18, 2007....

Is that Twilight by Stephenie Meyer?

I'm very good at finding things if I have details, so if this isn't it, give me some more details. I'm very good with mysteries, fantasy and science fiction.

Danielle Steel's not come up before so nobody's talked about her. If you want to, go ahead.

Favorite book? War and peace............ NOT!

Okay for real this time: My favorite book has got to be "The The Malleus Maleficarum" or loosely translated "The Witch Hammer".

It shows how woefully ignorant the people of Salem and other towns and villages that were "plagued by witches" were. It is important to read this book, if you cant get your hands on a copy here is an excellent link: www.malleusmaleficarum.org/, so that ignorance is not repeated. I also use the details of excorcism and spirits for my own fiction.
  • soloangel said on Jul 06, 2007....

Oh SweetCookie...I loved wuthering Heights also .

And Mommyof2 I also am a Dean Koontz lover.

I bought a set of books by Maria Valtorta called "Poem of the Man God".  Its 45.00 a volume unless u buy the 5 volume set. Its about the life of Christ. It starts with his own mothers life as a child, her growing up and so on..ends with some of what happens after Christs death.  Its a very thick set. Will take eons to read. But well worth it. It was a yearful sometimes funny read for me.
