KeplerView reads (5):

There were reports yesterday that hundreds of Turkish troops had crossed into norther Iraq at the border across from the Turkish city of Cukurca on Wednesday morning.

The Turkish foreign minister denies that any incursion took place though one of the Turkish security officials said it was a "hot pursuit" raid after Kurdish rebels of the PKK Kurdistan Worker's Party, had opened fire from Iraqi soil on Turkish patrols.

The Turkish goverment has threatened a massive incursion if the rebels continue to attack Turkish troops and civilians and then flee back into Iraq for safe haven. The Turkish officials say they are fighting a war on terrorism just as the United States is and they must protect their citizens.

Reaction from our Miltary was that they did not see any indications that this incursion occurred, but they would not be more specific, because of the sensitivity of the information.

United States officials in the region have confirmed that if there was an incursion it would be as a continuation of Turkey's years-long campaign against the Kurdish PKK guerrillas of Kurdistan Workers' Party.

The Turkish invasion scenario is one of those worst case ones that the United States is trying to avoid. The Turkish government opposes any formation of a separate Kurdistan, as the Kurds that reside in southern Turkey would want to join and it is why the rebels fight to try and get their own homeland back.

This is a difficult question, but Turkey has long been a good ally and we need to stand with them for now. However, at some point , there should be a diplomatic settlement to the Kurdish question, but only after they lay down their arms and stop killing civilians.

Please read the story of the Turkish incursion and I also have a link to an excellent article about Turkey, the Kurds and their long struggle to have an independent Kurdistan.

Thanks!

It's a very tough situation. Kurdish Iraq is the only place that is stable and resembles a democratic society. Should we allow Turkey to ruin that only part of Iraq we can point to and feel good about what we did?

    Bloc,

No we should do what we can to stop the use of northern Iraq as a staging area for rebels crossing into Turkey and killing soldiers and civilians.
We should also get our ally, Turkey to work on giving the Kurds the respect and part of an area in southern Turkey that could become an independent Kurdistan , as a minimal payment for the past abuse of these people.
    Thanks.

the problem is that Turkey has no desire for an independent kurdistan.

alot of Kurds live in Iraq what you are suggesting is to kicked them out of their homes again. The US gov't over the years has done enough to the Kurds. One of the worst things was ignoring the attempted  genocide of the Kurds by Suddam, even when he used mustard and nerve gas on them, when the states and Iraq were allies.   Kurdistan belonged to the Kurds then it was split between Turkey, Iran, Syria and Iraq.  The Kurds are truly an oppressed people and the US helped do that to them.
bloc the states didn't do anything but totally screwed the Kurds up.
The best way to deal with this is for the US to get out of Iraq.

    Darkpearl,

You are absolutely right, if we want to recognize the suffering and abuse of people the kurds offer an excellent example of genocide that the world continues to ignore even though it was nearl 90 years ago.

just as the jews were exterminated by the nazis, the kurds were exterminated during and after world war I.

They deserve a homeland once more!!

    Thanks!

    good morning Kepler View
I was refering to the one in 1988. I doubt they will ever have a homeland, I think what they are looking for political autonomy and since they believe in a democratic society, I think Bush should help them. Isn't that what he says his goal is? To ensure everyone lives in a democracy? (yes I am being sarcastic).
