I've been thinking about getting my masters. I've always wanted to study Communications, I mean I love Information Technology but Communications is my passion. My friends think that if i go for my masters I should stay within the IT field. Are they right? Does it matter much?

I want to apply for fall of 2008. I can save up, gain more work experience and also have plenty of time to look for financial aid. Too fast, too soon, some say but I think its just the right time. I'm not married, I don't have kids and I figure why wait.

Any ideas, thoughts, advice?

i don't think it matters as much as it used to matter....in the days of MBA's...

i believe if you want to go back, you should study what you're interested in.

does your company pay for you to get your masters if you get it in certain areas?  i know that's one of the things mine does-

aag, have you researched what kind of bump that would yield in your salary? because i agree this is the best time to pursue it--so many people have a plan to return to their education later, and later never comes.

Secret: I'm going to have to look into that.
sweet_cookie and queen : thanks for the encouragement! ☺
silver: That is exactly what I doing right now. I'm looking at all the options, possibilities, sacrifices because I think this is the best time to take the opportunity.

my suspicion is that it greatly increases your future salary prospects.

within my company having a master's doesn't do anything to your salary.  salary increases are yearly and are dependent upon how you rate against your objectives that year.

in the late 80's and early 90's there were many people who went for MBAs believing that the degree would yield an increase in salary.  Unless you went for another job, and had some experience to back up the degree, i don't think the degree alone would be reason for an increase.

there are many reasons that people pursue another degree or a higher degree.
some want another career when they're done with the one they're in....others just have an interest in an area that they would like to take further.  some want to move within the company to another type of work -- a few years ago PM was the big thing...everyone wanted to be a Project Manager....

the fact that large companies still pay for highter degrees most of the time (you have to get a B or better in each class for them to pay in my company and they only pay for certain degrees) is great motivation if you have the time in your life to go for it.  One guy who i worked with actually got the company to pay for his law degree -- and for two years, his 'job' was going to school.  what a great deal that was!

    Why wait until 2008?

There are plenty of jobs that combine elements of IT and communcations. Someone has to write all those blurbs and organize all those conventions.

I vote for following your heart.
