I dont want to live for ever, but as i do get older I would still like to have all my marbles intact, nice clear skin, and a healthy body, internally and externally....... I eat fish very often, not that i like fish! but purely because of its nutrient benefits, and I try to eat ginger and garlic as often as possible and to eat five peices of fruit and veg a day as the medics are always reccomending. I dont drink alcohol because of the medication im taking and i always hear that drinking red wine is very good for you, "in moderation"...Do you or anyone you know, have a certain food or drink that you/they swore by that prolonged there life, and is such a valuable nutritient? http://icandyworld.blogspot.com http://hubpages.com/_http/profile/compu-smart

green tea.  very high in antioxidents.
i've heard a glass or two of red wine per day is very healthy too.

Fly, that is a very good way to approach healthy eating.  I also try to ensure the 5 a day thing esp because I have my 3 year old and am very concious about what he eats.  I have heard from a very reliable source that the end bit of the banana - you know the bit that is usually hardish, black and bitter?  Well, that's the part that is best for you and that contains the most potassium.  I recently bought some green tea which is good for detoxing and I am now making the tea and then chilling it in the fridge, which helps me to stomach it :-). . .you get flavoured ones too now, which also helps!
  • flytimes said on Jun 05, 2007....
Im taking note..I heard someone mention this before to me but ive now been convinced, thanks, with regards to the "end bit" of a banana, well, I peel my bananas upside down so you mean the beginning bit lol, thankx im taking note,.... so on my shopping list now is more bananas, and green tea,..I feel healthier already:)

Twinings it is.. Is there any properties that red wine has, that can be found in any other foods? as ive heard soo much the valuable nutritionts red wine has?Ed, i can't and don't cook so i eat a single clove, raw as often as i can and the same with ginger, just a little bit which is not the tastiest way to consume and sometimes makes me heave:( but im sure the healthiest, right?
  • silverwhisper said on Jun 05, 2007....
raw's pretty intense, ft. i find that it's pretty darned tasty in certain types of italian dishes.

This is more of a question than a statement. Would de-alchoholized red wine have the same health properties? If it does then the conflic with meds would be resolved. For those who find garlic a bit overboard try adding a small amound of freshly grated ginger to recipes that have garlic. It reduces the bite and enhances the flavor.
  • flytimes said on Jun 05, 2007....
Ed.. pretty intense is deffinetly an understatement, lol------ Botoni,I can't cook and would not have the faintest idea of what to do with wine other than drink it;), and even if i could cook i dont have any proper cooking utensils..Although I really want to learn to cook...I have the best teacher here...."my pc", so i have no excuse... with regards to the de-alchoholized wine and its properties i have no idea...anyone?.. but a good point all the same..

I watched a program on healthy eating not so long ago.  They did tests on various men that had low sperm count and also damaged sperm.  After eating raw garlic (I think it was one meal a day) over a period of months their sperm was retested and not only did the sperm quality improve, but the sperm count shot up!
  • flytimes said on Jun 05, 2007....
Polar, I know you cant see me now but i got a BIG SMILE on my face right now :) I hope things deffinetly "shoot up" soon lol.. thanx

Even though I prefer to get nutrients from "real" foods instead of supplements, I've taken to supplementing with fish oil gels.  I like fish, but I can't bring myself to eat it several days a week.

I love blueberries.  I think they have some antioxidant properties.

French fries, pizza, coffee and a lot of energizers :)) that's the way i always do it :)) seriously now, i know that rice is really healthy (think about the japanese, who have the longest life span). Rice is really good (the taste i mean) and the cool thing is that you can cook it in a million delicious ways. You don't have every little vitamin or nutrients you need for the day, but that's where the "million ways to cook it" come in handy.
  • secretlife said on Jun 05, 2007....

botoni:  welches 100% grapejuice has the same health benefits as red wine.

it's a bit strong straight out of the bottle.  i mix it for my family...about 1/3 water.

    also red grapes....

  • gingersoul said on Jun 05, 2007....

Pomegranates juice is even richer in antioxidants then green tea.

White tea is better than the normal green tea.

Olive oil is good for everything, or almost. ...:-)

Salmon is the best source of omega but need to be wild and not farmed. Wild Alaskan Sokeye Salmon is my choice when i have money.

Red wine... the tannin is an excellent elements.

Garlic......if you dont like it raw just bake it. I throw whole cloves of garlic with my roasted potatoes......

Cantaloupe has more Vitamic C than strawberries. Apples are truly a miracolous fruits, but eaten with the skin...

Blueberries are the best fruit antioxidants-wise...

Cooked tomatoes have more antioxidants and vitamis than no cooked ones

Water..drink water as much as you can

Flaxseed and Fish oil are the best supplements.

    Hi,
I agree with gingersoul, she has the right foods, by the way, Italy comes out as having the longest lives statistically than any other country, so the food there is the right food.

On the advice of our alternate healer (who is also our Rabbi) we have fish once a week, and sometimes take omega oil also, we also should have grilled liver once a week, (get to it once a month) and should have carrot juice once a week (more or less, since we can get it premade from a store on the way home from shopping).

I was told to have pomegranate juice in the winter and water melon in the summer (I had two bouts with melanoma, but that is another story, and the pomegranate juice and the water melon are good for post cancer healing). Our Rabbi/Healer also said that red meat is good once a week, (but not for me,except for a bite).

All berry juices, including cranberry are good anti-cancer and for general health, (from the reports on the internet  re BBC especially (that's the only thing I trust them with).

Tomato juice with some dried red pepper is anti-cancer and anti-germs, but it can be too much and cause arthritus if you over do it.

Red grape juice is just as good as wine for the heart, that's what I've read. So why not eat losts of grapes?

My Aunt, who lived to 103! told me :Never Never to eat red meat that has not been overnight in a marinade. There are lots of marinades that work, some are  acid based: all kinds of wines, vinegars, Coke or Pepsi, citrus juices etc. or oil and spice concoctions, especially garlic and dried red pepper with a touch of wine or lemon juice if you like.

In a book called Dr. Franks No-Aging diet  he said that eating foods high in RNA-DNA  will correct the mistakes that lead to aging and he recommended supplements of RNA-DNA but stressed that eating mushrooms, sardines, salmon, anchovies, liver, mackeral, clams, most fishes, nuts, dark meat poultry, and legumes are better than taking supplements.
  • viciousgrl said on Jun 09, 2007....
trinov..sorry to have to disagree with you but the japanese are the ones who have the longest lives than any countries...they're livespan's are in average  90 years old.
  • Trinov said on Jun 09, 2007....
    Hi,
Just checked my new almanac.Japan men 77, women 84, Italy men  76
, women 82.5,  so you are right, I remembered the old statistics, but
the difference is not that big, let's see the US is men 74, women 80.

And the Japanese do have lots of people over 100.  So we have an
average, and maybe we need a mean, or the middle of the bell curve.

In mountainous regions, like the Caucauses and places like Bulgaria
there are people who live to their hundreds and still function. My Aunt
was still driving until she was 90, for instance. I had a great, great,
great uncle (by marriage) who was still running a farm at 115, (according
to what he said and what my grandparents said), and he looked ancient
but was still spry and funny.

What we can't see from these figures is if the old people are out there
and functioning, involved with life and family, or if they are nursing home
    residents, half zombies.

I read somewhere that how society treats the elderly may also be the
key to long functioning lives, and in Japan the elderly are respected. I
have the impression that this is true in Italian families also.

  • gingersoul said on Jun 09, 2007....

Trinov.....yes, you are right....Italian society still thrives to mantain the same family bonds that had forged its typical structure by centuries...

The elderly are still central in the family and they are respected as the custodian of the old traditions...

Its easy to see young couples who dont mind sharing their home with their old parents when these ones are unable to take care of themselves.....lack of money is the only reason why the old ones are put in nursing home. The natural choice i still keeping in the home and have them involved in the life of the family as much as possible.

wow , Ive caused quite a debate while ive been away, and i always love a mass debate, hehe;) viciousgrl, being realistic, and poor i don't think i will be buying a cook book, and instead will be looking for a few good websites that are designed for "cooking for one" I know poor me lol:(===== Hi trinov welcome to my blog, with regards to your mothers advice about never eating red meat unless its marinated seems a very usefull tip as it not only makes the meat tastier but also healthier which is ok in my books..."not cook books btw, lol, also you have made some very interesting points, and by the looks of things you are going to be around for a very very very long time...:)=====Ginger soul====With the state of our care homes(uk) and all the bad press they seem to get I would never ever go in one and can'not afford to go in a private one, but im definitely thinking well ahead lol..Hopefully with all these good foods and drinks i will be buying Wednesday i hope to live much longer but more importantly healthier..
