Do your cooking habits change during the summer months?

I know that grilling is popular, but it seems to be a year round thing more and more.

Do you eat more cold cuts, chips, etc.? Do you have more salads? Do you stay out of the kitchen when it's hot outside?

Care to share?

Summertime is for light eating.  I do a lot of grazing, especially when fresh local veggies become available.  I grill a lot, simple fare like burgers, bbq chicken or ribs.   Pasta salads and potato salads are almost daily fare.  I also like cold soups, simple sandwiches and iced coffee.

We call it 'Porch Supper'. Cold cuts, tray buns, cheeses, veggies with dip and precut fresh fruit with homemade lemonade or ice tea. Then of course grilling that entails chicken, pork chops, steaks, shrimp etc. Then there s always the massive caesar salad topped with strips of grilled chicken. Uhhh...yup the cooking changes for summer.
  • MissMimi said on Jun 04, 2007....
I love summer food. All the fresh fruit and veggies. I would almost always prefer to eat veggies raw, and there's nothing better than a ripe tomato fresh from the garden. And yes, I know tomatoes are a fruit. :p
During the summer, I go out of my way to use the oven as little as possible.

Botty if I promise to behave myself can I come over for supper on the porch? Do you have a porch? I think you're my favorite. :D

CW--You must be reading my mind, I was about to post something very similar about summer salads because we tend to do a great deal more grilling but even more so we make so many more salads.

    Mimi,
I could make a meal from fresh cucumbers, tomatoes and some fried okra.  Not the deep fried stuff you find on buffets.  Fresh okra from the garden that is cut up, floured and then fried in just a little oil in a skillet.  I love that summer meal.

Of course there is nothing like a good BLT with fresh garden tomatoes too.

It's so frustrating because most nights, not just in the summer, I would be happy with a salad or a bowl of good soup, but to my husband if it isn't meat and potatoes and it isn't hot food, it isn't dinner. Very narrow minded about this, among other things.
  • silverwhisper said on Jun 05, 2007....
i'm an absolute carnivore but during summer, even i like a nice salad. it's lighter, doesn't heat up our home, can be made quickly...what's not to like? :>

I love to cook. I am the cook of the house and I try to keep thing interesting. I love to grill as well so somettimes I try to combine the two whenever I can. It is rather rainy here where I live so sometimes that is a hinderence for us but I have been known to grill in the rain a couple of times. One of my favorites that I don't get to do is camp cooking. Over an open flame in the woods with all you need right around you. I miss it but oh well I am sure something will come along to similate it!

MimiMissy......You can certainly come for porch supper! The name comes from when my kids were small. We lived in an old turn of the century house in a neighborhood where the trees were so large they formed an arch over the street. It was a beautiful calm setting where the neighbors would be out for the storll and often stop to have a nibble with us. As to 'If I pomise to behave...' couldnt you misbehave just a little? No porch on this house although there is a small stoop in the front that will serve in a pinch. The backyard patio usually is home to porch supper now. Hopefully next year we ll have a porch at the front with garden doors out from the dining room. My crumbling walk will be replaced with a long sweeping curved wheel chair ramp so you ll be able to make a dramatic entrance.

During the summer I tend to eat more fresh veggies and fruits.  I use the stove sparringly.

One of my favorites for a hot day is to do a loaf of french bread, a few different cheeses, some deli style green olives, cold cuts, sliced fruits and a chilled bottle of reisling or a fruity sangiovese.  We eat with our fingers and nibble all evening.

  • silverwhisper said on Jun 05, 2007....

I have an aversion to the kitchen regardless of the season!

As far as summertime foods, I'm partial to pasta salads.  My mother-in-law makes a salad with spaghetti (other pasta works here), grape tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions, tossed with Italian dressing (fat-free actually makes it taste better).  It's best if it sits in the fridge overnight.
  • beaker said on Jun 05, 2007....
I'm a veggie, and so I eat a lot of quorn and veggie mince. I don't fry anything, only grill or oven. Salads are a big thing in our house with, lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, cellery, lovely cheeses, like wensleydale and cheddar with coleslaw. I sometimes sprinkle pine nuts and olive oil. I eat the same all year round.

My favourite meal though has to be a curry with popudoms and narn bread. Followed by  a lager...lovely. There was a scottsman on tv the other night, defending himself (well sort of), he was denying the fact that the Scotts have chips everyday (I think you call them fries). he said "yes I might have chips one day, then I let them cool and have them the next day....we call that  a salad!"

since my lady goes away for the summer, my eating habits change drastically during this time of the year.  I eat a lot more old pizzas out of the box, root through the garbage, and use the stove only to light my cigs.

  • Trinov said on Jun 05, 2007....

In the real heat of the summer here--it can get 104 in the shade for a few weeks, we find ourselves only eating in the evenings or at night. We used to be vegans and/or vegetarians, but now we eat chicken and turkey and we have an electric grill or a over the stove thingee that can be used for a grill and that way or a microwave is how we do meat in the summer.

But a lot of times we have chumus and salads (you can buy them pre-cut and we've gotten lazy), other spreads like peanut butter (goes great with chumus or with mashed potatoes --though it sounds strange--(Thai cooking uses peanut butter also) pine nuts, grated carrot salads, carrot juice, lots of raw vegetables, lots of fruit, water melon is obligatory, so are cherries and grapes in season. Some soy burgers and micro waved or hard boiled eggs get added when we feel we need protein.

Most Middle Eastern cuisine is very heavy on salads.

My father's aunts would serve about ten to fifteen types of salad for a company meal, I wish I had that much energy.

  • bloc said on Jun 05, 2007....
i'm a veggy so i'm sure it's different for me. I cook a lot of soups in the winter, but none in the summer. I eat a ton of salad and make a lot of fruit smoothies. Mm, smoothies :)
