The Duke would have been 100 years old this year.  In my opinion he was a great American actor.  The celebration of this birthday has been big news on my local regional radio.  His birthplace is within driving distance from me.  They are very proud of him.

I love his movies.  I don't know if I can truly pick a favorite, so I will list my top three.

True Grit
Big Jake
Chisom

    In Harm's Way
    McClintock

I think he was always great in those WWII epics. McClintock is a western, but more like a romantic comedy in a Western setting. Maureen O'Hara plays his esptranged wife, and the chemistry between them is pretty hot.

    Big Jake
    Hellfighters
    The Green Berets
The Angel and the Bad Man
    The Shootist

    True Grit
    Rooster Cogburn
    The Sons Of Katie Elder
    Rio Lobo

I could go on for ever. I would have to say that I like John Wayne movies just a little bit! lol

I have never been a John Wayne fan really, but he was an icon. So many of the really great actors  have gone in recent years. It seems to be replaced by second rate,or mediocre actors and dazzling special effects.

    Mimi,
I also love McClintock.  It is a great movie.  I think I have one.  I'm going to have to watch it again.

The sons of Katie Elder has my absolute favorite John Wayne moment, where George Kennedy (bad guy) is dunking the blacksmith's head in a trough of water trying to get some information from him, John Wayne steps into the smithy, grabs a HUGE 2x4, yells "Hey!",... when George Kennedy looks up, SWAT goes the lumber across his head, down he goes. John Wayne to the rescue.

I think Flying Leathernecks is the only movie where John actually dies. Anybody know of any others?

    KC,
You do have good tastes.  ;-)  I also love Clint Eastwood.  I have seen most of his movies as well.  Pale Rider and the Dirty Harry movies jump to mind as favorites.  He is another one that I have a hard time picking just one favorite.

I'm not putting a face with the name Terrance Hill.  We'll have to watch some of his movies one day.  :-)

I've never seen a John Wayne movie.  I've caught bits and pieces when my husband watches them, but I've never actually sat down and watched one all the way through.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jun 04, 2007....
Terrance Hill stars in "my name is nobody", "my name is still nobody" and "boot hill".  There are probably more, but these are the biggies.  These three are what they call the trinity series.  He is a very handsome but very lazy outlaw who plays at appearing naive.  Fantastic stuff.
  • gingersoul said on Jun 04, 2007....

Unique and King..........do you really love him so much?....lol...

CW....Terence Hill is the English name of an Italian actor, Mario Girotti, born in Venice....

He is a prolific actor but here in Usa is known only for the Trinity series and film like 'My name is Nobody", "Ace High" "Blood  river'......he has the most piercing blue eyes ever....lol...

My dad was a huge fan of John Wayne...so i watched a lot of his movies...never liked him though....sorry, guys....please, dont kill me....

I think he wasn't this great actor at all (basically he had two expressions: with closed eyes and with open eyes)....but he had a strong screen charisma..

I liked Clint Eastwood in the so called "western spaghetti" series from the other Italian director, Sergio Leone.......always great soundtracks in those movies..

        .

I'm not a huge John Wayne fan, but I've always loved the ones where he stars opposite of Maureen O'Hara. My absolute all time favorite of his:
    The Quiet Man.

Every time I went to my uncle's house, he had some western or WWII film on. He was a huge John Wayne fan, and I guess his tastes rubbed off on me. I think The Shootist stands out as the one I remembered the most, especially becuase it was his last acting role. But I am partial to The Searchers, Rooster Cogburn and True Grit, and I could never go without mentioning The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance.
  • Expendable said on Jun 05, 2007....

Wake of the Red Witch has John Wayne as a corrupt 19th century ship's captain in the South Pacific who sinks a rival's treasure ship.

You might want to watch Reap the Wild Wind first - again, a 19th Century ship's captain whose ship is lost at the begining of the movie and he's blamed for the loss, speculation that he's in league with the salvagers.

  • CreativeWoman said on Jun 05, 2007....
    harried,
Those are all good movies.  The Shootist is full of great actors like Jimmy Stewart in supporting roles.  Great movie.

Thanks. I'm not sure I've ever seen either of those John Wayne movies.  I will have to watch for them on one of the classic movie channels.
