i swear there are times that i think my son is going to turn into a peanut butter sandwich. it's his favorite sandwich choice, but then again, he's 6, so that's rather to be expected.

so, a couple of simple questions, fellow soulcasters... {oh come now, i can't always ask a single simple question. ;) }

Plain or crunchy?

Processed (pre-mixed peanut butter) or natural/organic (the kind that typically separates into the ground nut paste and oil. and not all "natural" peanut butter is organic)?

Do you stick to one specific brand?

What do you put on your peanut butter sandwiches besides peanut butter when/if you put other things on them?

Does anyone use other nut butters such as almond butter or cashew butter?

Zayda, I once was a peanut butter addict and this is no lie.  I would lie in front of the tv and eat it out of the jar with a teaspoon. . .anyone who knows anything about calories will tell you that there is enough calories in two tablespoons of peanut butter to fulfill one day's allowance!  I had to stop buying peanut butter altogether and probably did not have it in the house for a year or two.  The I bought a jar one day, but my addiction was broken and even now, if I have it twice in a month, that's a lot.

Anyway, back to your question, for me its always been smooth regular peanut butter.  I like it on its own, but my hubby and son have it with suryp or honey.

    Polar :-)

It is always Plain for me and it has to be Jiff as well. Have you all been reading on the pb scare with salmanila? Please becareful what you buy and where. I wouldn't want any of you getting real sick.

Polar: Two tablespoons of peanut butter has 190 calories, which is not more than a daily allowance of calories. Most people have about a 1500 calorie daily diet, some a 2000 calorie, but some around a 1200 calorie. Then again, lots of people far surpass the 2000 calorie a day diet as well.

But I can understand a peanut butter addiction, sort of. Sometimes, when I just need a bite of something, I'm prone to getting a teaspoon of peanut butter out of the jar and just eating that and nothing else. Or, I'll get a tablespoon of peanut butter and slice an apple and smear the peanut butter on the end of each apple slice.

I like honey on my peanut butter sometimes.

Genalonewolf--As far as I have heard on the news the Salmonella in PB was confined to one brand, Peter Pan. It's off the shelf in all the groceries here and has been since the news of the scare first broke. I somehow think that we won't ever see Peter Pan peanut butter on the shelves again because the salmonella taint was associated with just that one brand. The spinach issue from earlier this year was across several brands, and spinach is now back and thriving at the stores again.

i'm a huge fan of peanut butter, too. i prefer smooth over chunky, and natural vs processed--it just tastes more like peanuts to me.

since the mrs does the shopping, i have no brand loyalty, although our store brand is pretty darned good, IMHO.

i have no experience w/ butters made of other types of nuts--unless nutella counts? cuz that stuff i absolutely love. :>

Your son and I share the same taste in sandwiches - peanut butter on 12 grain is my favorite.  Organic, natural peanut butter from Trader Joe's with Polaner's all fruit strawberry spread - yummy, yummy, yummy - nice tall glass of vanilla soy milk.  There is nothing better!
  • polarheart said on Jun 01, 2007....
Oh, Zayda, sorry I got it wrong. . .it was a long time ago!  Now having a look I must have looked at the kJ which would then have been half my energy allowance of 1200.  I.e. if I had two tablespoons of pb I would only have half left to eat decent food!  Thus I had to stop the pb in order to lose weight.
  • Zayda said on Jun 01, 2007....
Artemis--That sounds good, except for the soy milk part.

PH--I think the real problem with peanut butter for most people is that they can't stop at just two tablespoons (one serving). Well, that and many people have no idea just how much two tablespoons is.

All this PB talk made me hungry because I realized I hadn't eaten breakfast. So, I grabbed the peanut butter and had peanut butter and crackers for a late breakfast. LOL.

I prefer smooth over crunchy.  I like natural peanut butter, but Miss Pickypants, my oldest daughter, doesn't, so we have both kinds at home.

I don't swear allegiance to any particular brand.  I usually just get a store brand.

We like grape jelly or strawberry preserves or honey on our sandwiches.

I've never tried other types of nut butters.  I'll bet my kids would love cashew butter, since they love cashews so much.

I love peanut butter and so do my girls but due to DH's allergy it's been a rare treat.

Crunchy & as near to natural as I can afford to get it. I've had almond butter in the past too but it wasn't ever quite the same.

Hello everyone, Elvis used to eat toast with a lot of peanut butter and bananas. All of them fried in oil.
I did't  try it but sounds delicious. But i prefer the unfried version.I think is healtier.

  • beyondtheveil said on Jun 01, 2007....
zayda- I've always liked it, but its never been one of my favorite foods. If I was to eat a peanut butter sandwich it would be with grape jelly or bananas and honey.

The peanut butter we have in the house now is used to dip pills into for my dog that takes two a day. She prefers Jif creamy.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jun 01, 2007....
Crunchy!  Any brand, but not the kind that you have to mix up.  I don't like PB sandwiches that much, but do enjoy it on celery and in cookies.
  • MissMimi said on Jun 01, 2007....

Crunchy.  I eat it spread on toast, or spread on a banana.

I rarely eat PB&Js but I love peanut butter cookies.  I also have been known to put a spoonful in chocolate chip cookie dough.

Am I the only one that loves the Peanut Butter that was re-called for salmonella?  Peter Pan?  Man...  I still can't find that stuff on the shelves yet.  Peter Pan whipped is good.  It's like super fluffy & creamy.  Until I find that stuff back on the shelves, Jif creamy, please.
  • quietone said on Jun 01, 2007....

creamy or crunchy on an nice english muffin with a good cup of mocha coffee sounds good to me.  fluffernutter ummm only can't have the sugar anymore :(

  • RollingC said on Jun 01, 2007....
Very fattening stuff that but delicious....make mine crunchy......any brand as long as it's crunchy.
  • botoni said on Jun 01, 2007....
Smooth for me please....home ground is my fave but Jiffy will do. The following is just a short list of howi like it.
On toast with any sweet jam or jelly.
On fresh home made buns with butter.
    In frozen peanut butter pie.
    Toasted sandwich with crispy bacon.
In white bread sandwiches with honey...allowed to sit for the day so that the honey becomes a bit crytalized.
    On banana or apple pieces.
My former wife liked it in a sandwich with sweet pickles....never did cultivate that taste though.
Needless to say it rarely comes in to my home because I have trouble staying away from it. I hide it from myself. If I dont see it I m less tempted.
  • TheNakedProfessor said on Jun 01, 2007....
I like smooth peanut butter, otherwise I think of it as peanut rubble ;)

    Apple butter - yum!!!!

As far as brands go, I dated someone long ago who got me into organic peanut butter, but any brand will do in a crunch .... (er)

Also, peanut butter & banana & honey sandwiches are delicious....but watch out for the energy burst to follow - !
  • minniemouse said on Jun 01, 2007....
Straight PB & J for me.....crunchy Jiff please....usually on wheat bread, but the best is usually on the worthless white bread....I treat myself and have that maybe once a year!!!  :-)  MM

Polar, I also eat peanut butter quite a lot and it's the only way i get to eat nuts which are such an amazing and powerful nutrient, and I've heard even doctors say eating peanut butter is good for you so i wouldn't worry... ohhh!! and has he tried adding raisin's or sultanas which are another good source of nutrients.

can’t forget Mickey Rooney in an old movie when he was eating a peanut butter sandwich. The house he was in blew up and he said “ I was just minding my own busyness , eating my peanut butter sandwich “

I like creamy Peter Pan.  I know this sounds strange, but my favorite time to have a peanut butter sandwich is with a bowl of chili.  They always served it that way with school lunches when I was a kid and I just loved it. That's really the only time I have them anymore.

Wow, this got more responses than I thought and I let responding to the comments away from me.

For me, I prefer crunchy over creamy but will eat creamy. We have both crunchy and creamy in the house since the little man prefers creamy.

I prefer natural over pre-processed, but natural crunchy is harder to find, unless you live near an organic market where you can grind the peanuts there on the spot to the consistency you like and then add some chopped peanuts to mix in. So, for crunchy, I most typically buy Jiff Crunchy.

I'm fond of peanut butter and banana sandwiches, but not deep-fried like Elvis liked them. (Although, I do have a recipe for "The Thin Elvis Special", a grilled peanut butter, honey, and banana sandwich.)

I also like peanut butter and honey sandwiches, but have never been a big fan of peanut butter and jelly. If I do eat peanut butter and jelly it's usually strawberry jelly, never grape, or sometimes orange marmalade.

I'm also a big fan of peanut butter in celery.

And sometimes, I like peanut butter smeared on my waffles instead of using syrup.

And as quiteone noted, it's good on english muffins with a cup of coffee or mocha or even tea.

Of the other nut butters, I really like almond butter, and it's supposedly better for you than peanut butter. Cashew butter is also really good.

I found a great site, awhile back, that sells fabulous varieties of nut butters: Futters Nut Butters. Interestingly, one of the google ads on this post is sometimes the link to that site.

I love red rasberry jelly with the seeds.
AHHHH... Heaven on Earth!! We eat lots
and lots of pb&j sandwiches at our house!!

istherelife...Ahhh...another fan of red raspberry jelly. I too like it with the seeds in it. If it doesn't have the seeds, it's just not right, IMO.

    Yummmy !
I have missed my jiff for so long, think it was three years since i tasted
the smoothly essence of the most heavenly delictable sticking to the roof of my mouth peanut butter.  But a builder came into work one day not long since
and said he was off to Florida (Britts love Florida)  i asked him if he would be
a dear and bring me back some Jiff smooth peanutbutter, he said he
would try to find it, told him there wont be a problem with finding it. lol
Well a few weeks went by and forgot all about it, and one day he popped into where i work and wha la! Behold the Jiff!
Was so thrilled that it brought a tear to my eyes.  He really made my year.
I opened the jar right there on the spot and dipped my finger into that jar pulled out that smooth peanut butter and savored it, they all thought me to be that
crazy yank but i didnt mind, then made them all have a go and they couldnt believe how yummy it is.
There is nothing like american peanut butter they said.
He told me that he went to WalMart thinking he wasnt going to find any but
couldnt believe his eyes when he saw rows of peanut butter.
We americans love peanut butter.  Ymmmmmm.

Smooth peanut butter for eating, crunchie for making cookies.

I like almond butter and pecan butter and have had walnut butter (It has quite a strong flavor)  I used to make nut butters at home, that's where the walnut butter came from, but it is available in the markets around here.

I like peanut butter spread over celery, apples and bananas.  A toasted banana peanut butter sanddwich is a great treat for the grandkids.  Also peanut butter sandwich sprinkled with cimmamon sugar.  I also like to eat it straight from the jar or sperad on saltines.

Apple butter is a great alternative to peanut butter and less fattening....(I think)
  • Zayda said on Jun 08, 2007....
Starryn: I'm glad your friend was able to get you some Jiff. :)

RWW: I eat crunchy; I prefer it that way. I use it for making cookies too, but most people I know use creamy for their cookies. Ohhhhh...peanut butter pancakes. And RWW, just for "taunting" me to not get you started on your pancake proclivities....I have an idea for another post. ;)

RollingC: I've never been fond of apple butter; and to me, it's more like a thick jelly/jam than it is any nut butter.

Another great taste for peanut butter is = bread=peanut butter= jam(purple)=chedar cheese. ymmmmm and peanut butter melted over vanilla ice cream.

I don't think I could do peanut butter and cheddar cheese. Although, when I was younger, one of my cousins would eat peanut butter, pepperoni, and American cheese sandwiches.

Oh, but golly, it sounds fantastic over vanilla ice cream.
