I enjoyed letting my toes hang out with yesterday's silly question, but today I have another more philosophical question.  I'm reading a book (Tibetan Book of the Dead) that puts forth the theory that people are reborn into new lifes until they achieve a level of enlightenment that let's them escape the "wheel" of rebirth.  I wrote my other blog about it, and who I thought I may have been www.uniquelymoronic.wordpress.com but would like to know if you think this is possible and if so, who you've been in a past life.

unique- I sometimes wonder if there is just one universal consciousness that inhabits every living thing. It would be the sum total of everything that has ever happened and would answer a lot of questions of reincarnation and the things we think about ourselves.

It wouldn't be who you were in a past life, but past life itself.

honestly, i don't believe in past lives/reincarnation. i don't because the single common theme in every person i've ever known who does subscribe to the theory is that they were invariably some notable person, rather than sticking with the vastly more statistically likely option of having been a serf, peasant or equivalent.

I'm always open to new ideas like this, but I'm not a hundred percent sold on the theory. The main reason for that being, it totally contradicts my beliefs that my loved ones are watching over me from above. They can't be watching me, if they've been reborn somewhere in India. Plus, I believe so strongly in a spirit world, I have a hard time thinking that it isn't true.

But at the same time, I've heard some very interesting stories about past lives and I won't discount anyone else's beliefs. I firmly believe that everyone needs to believe whatever makes them happiest. And for me, it's thinking that our souls move onto a better place when we're done here.

And from what I understand (I could be totally wrong and you can tell me) under Karmic Law, a person has to be pretty righteous and pure, almost saintly, in order to remove his soul from the rebirth process. Not many people on this earth would fall into that category. And I'd like to believe that if you live a good life and don't hurt anyone, that your soul is worthy of entering Heaven. Lot's of people would disagree with me on the 'ground rules' for salvation, I'm sure. But again, this is what I believe. And in the end, none of us know for sure who's right or wrong. It all comes down to blind faith.

BTV - I've heard that philosophy and it would explain a lot.  Some say that babies are born with the wisdom of the universe and "dumb down" to fit in to this existance.

SW - There is that.  I don't think I've been a person of noteworthiness in this life, or any other.  It would seem unlikely that many of us would be.  What do you make of some people's fears of things they have necessarily never had bad encounters with. (water, fire, brussel sprouts)

ET - I see what you're saying, and can understand the comfort of believing our loved ones are always with us.  One theory of reincarnation suggests that our family members are reborn in close proximity though not neccesarily the same role.  (i.e. your sister would come back as your aunt, etc.)

u-i: i generally chalk that up to strange associations that people form, myself. most people have a reasonable fear of fire or water (burning or drowning). in some cases, perhaps it's an event that happened when people were very young and can no longer recall fully beyond the emotional context of the experience?

the brussel sprouts, i can't explain beyond the fact that they're ugly and taste bad. :D

Silver--Actually, not every person that you have ever known who believes in past lives believes they were some person of note. I do believe in past lives, but am sure that I have never been a person of noteworthiness or nobility in any of those past lives; however, I'm not fully sure what those past lives are.
  • uniquely-ironic said on May 30, 2007....
Z - I don't think I've ever met anyone who was really sure.  Mostly we like to daydream a little and see where the mind takes us.
  • Zayda said on May 30, 2007....
I have a friend who is sure; he firmly believes in reincarnation and is sure about at least three of his past lives--who he was, his station in life, and very specific details of those lives.

I just read a very interesting book by a psychotherapist who's an expert in past life therapy. He believes that with the use of hypnosis, certain patients can gain insight into current behaviors by going back into their former lives. That is a huge oversimplification, but it's interesting.

i really have no idea or any clue... what i know is i am living this lifetime like this is the only lifetime i will ever live... hmmm... i wonder what my previous life was like.....
  • agentdru said on May 30, 2007....
I have this theory that the things you love in this life, fear in this life, etc., are the result of an accumulation of feelings from past lives.

    Sound confusing?  *lol*

In short, I believe in past lives.  I've done readings about my "past lives".  I've had at least three (according to my cards), and each and every one of them has been miserable.  *rolls eyes*

Definitely hoping to break the cycle this time around.

My mom dragged me to one session and I really don't remember much about who I was. Mostly I remember the dying. Reliving being burned at the stake, drowning, hanging and getting my leg shot off by a cannon ball has not made me curious enough to try it again.

I've never had a reading done, but am curious to at least see one done.  I don't know if I really want to know who I was and how I died in a previous life.  This one seems to keep me pretty busy!

Honestly, I think re-incarnation is such a load. No offense to those who beleive in it, though      PhazonPhreak out.
  • uniquely-ironic said on May 31, 2007....
Phazon - what makes it harder to believe than the concept of heaven?
  • Holly-Go-Lightly said on May 31, 2007....

I admit, I'm not real sure I believe in former lives, though it certainly seems possible.  Traditionally, Asian and Indian cultures were/are very reincarnation based faiths.  Its an interesting concept, one which you may enjoy learning more about.

While I haven't experienced any past lives or had readings done, I can't say for sure. But I think *agentdru* that you gave me an answer to something I've been wondering about for years. One of my best friend's went regularly to have readings done on her past lives, and try to work out this life (which was very hard on her). So you know how you said both good & bad things from other lives can affect us?

Well, after going to the readings for some time, she felt she was at an impasse. She told me one day that she had been a Catholic nun in SEVEN of her past lives, which was hilarious, because during this lifetime, she had always had something against the Catholic Church, and she never knew why. She wasn't even Catholic!!!!

But, my god, if you spent 7 lifetimes of purity, piety, poverty, and penance--you would definately want to break from anything from the past, and in this life, have some great friends, great times, great love, and great sex!!! Anyone would be cranky walking around all day in those old-fashioned wool "uniforms", and being totally & completely undersexed!!! No wonder she had a problem with it!! LOL

    *Holly*

  • uniquely-ironic said on May 31, 2007....
Holly - LOL, I don't know that I would be a bit different in your friend after so many lifetimes as a nun.
