We are faced with a challenge unlike any faced by mankind before. In this era, we have affected our climate adversely to such an extent that the future of our children and our children's children may be in doubt. Aside from the threat posed by WMDs, global warming is a catastrophe on the horizon. The major glaciers and polar ice caps are melting at an astonishing rate and the mean temperature around the world is on the rise. This creates unusual weather and increasingly severe storms across the globe. These effects are well documented and are becoming more severe. The sea level has been shown to be rising and meanwhile diverse areas are experiencing either extreme droughts or excessive precipatation. There is a danger that the Gulf Stream current will shut down as the Atlantic Ocean becomes desalinized by ice melt. This would cause unknown climatic changes in Europe and Asia, even possibly effecting the US. There are many nay sayers who dismiss the mounting evidence and consider the changes part of a natural trend. Unfortunately, they don't take into account the rapidity of these changes nor the fact that the changes have been accelerating since the industrial age began. In fact, the industrial age is the major cause for this change in climate. Countries emit millions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere and huge expanses of forests and rain forests have been destroyed. Those are just some of the important factors involved in the global warming affecting the Earth. The people of the world need to press their leaders to start making an effort to slow down this climate change.

I have heard many debates about global warming. Some people say that "it's not that bad", while others say that we humans will meet our demise through global warming. What I do know for sure is that we are wrecking our planet one day at a time, without any thought that it might be indispensible to us in the future! Duh, right?

It's historically documented that 1000 years ago, farmers in Greenland - yes, that currently frozen tundra near and in the Artic Circle, exported wheat and other products to Scandinavia. As the Earth cooled, the farming industry there died out. In the 1600s, the Earth went through what was called the "Little Ice Age", from which we are now emerging. Earth's climate has been far warmer in the past, and far colder. It should go without saying that humans were not responsible for any of the numerous the Ice Ages the Earth has gone through over the past 4.5 billion years. We very well may be contributing to the overall level of CO2, Methane, and other so-called "greenhouse" gases, but there is not one shred of scientifically supported evidence that says the climate will somehow "stabilize" even if we completely eliminate our ghg production. From a geological perspective, this much is certain: In the future, the Earth's climate will dramtically change one way and then the other. The people least able to adapt to the new global conditions will plainly not survive. The people who are able to adapt will not only survive, they will eventually inherit an Earth bursting forth with new life, new species and new opportunities to develop. We are finding out more and more than life can thrive on Earth in the harshest of conditions. Life will go on. New forms of life will emerge from the old. This has been the case for billions of years and, barring any catastophic planetary collisions, will continue to be so until the Sun dies. It's really sad that so many "scientists" have chosen to forsake their knowledge-gathering role and instead prophesy false tales of doom to a gaggle of willfully ignorant congregants. Millions of people are needlessly dying every year for lack of developed infrastructure and need of simple pesticides and water purification systems. All to please these covens of faith-based Earth worshippers who despise the unimaginable security and privilege they inherited from those who brought about the Industrial Age. Quit thinking about the great-great-grandchildren you will never meet and instead think about the starving neighbors next door!

"We very well may be contributing to the overall level of CO2, Methane, and other so-called "greenhouse" gases, but there is not one shred of scientifically supported evidence that says the climate will somehow "stabilize" even if we completely eliminate our ghg production." No one says that it will stabilize. What is said is that we are making the climate warmer than it would have been otherwise and that this will have bad consequences. Faithmatters, the rest of your post doesn't really make sense to me. No one is saying that all life will be destroyed as you assert. However, human life will likely be much much harder. Why make us suffer if we don't have to? Your "faith-based earth worshippers" comment is just a baseless ad hominem.

I agree with bloc, don't get me wrong I love the planet! My husband says that the greenhouse effect is just something that was made up by the government...blah blah blah.... I believe that we are harming the planet, I'm just trying to change things my way by teaching my kids, picking up garbage in my neighbourhood etc...The best way to teach people is to act about it and not just complain!

Bloc, The point is that the geologic record tells us that the climate has changed dramatically over the course of Earth's history and will do so again. "Warmer than it would have been otherwise"?? Warmer than what? When Greenland was arable 1000 years ago? Warmer than when the dinosaurs walked the Earth? 6 billion people on this planet and counting are going to leave a footprint on the environment even if we all switch to wind, solar and pesticide-free organic farming. Why are we focusing on decelerating a climate warming process subject to many other variables that are beyond our control, when the climate will change no matter what we do? Aren't there more pressing problems we ought to be focusing on? "Human life will likely be much harder" Harder than what? Harder than the vast majority of humanity that lives on less than $2.00 per day? Harder than the people starving to death this very moment? Harder than the millions who die of preventable, treatable disease due to unclean water supplies? The original post blames the industrial age for all the damage done on the planet. Local industrial development and infrastructure creation give the poorest humans on this planet their best chance of surviving dramatic climate change. Those who blame the Industrial Age for all of our ills without acknowledging the tremendous benefits and life-saving potential stand obstinately in the way of people whose lives are already unimaginably hard. As for ad hominem attacks - in the 60s and 70s we very nearly wiped out malaria all over the planet. But thanks to the so-called environmentalist movement borne in the First World, roughly four million of the planet's poorest people suffer and die each year because DDT and other life-saving pesticides have been banned globally. Now who is making us "suffer when we don't have to"? Baseless, indeed.

I don't know any other way to say this, but your logic makes no sense. Your saying the equivalent to this. Thousands of people get lung cancer who never smoked. Therefore, I'm going to smoke because i might get lung cancer anyway. What we are doing greatly increases the chances of very bad things happening. The fact that they have happened before naturally doesn't mean that would shouldn't stop doing things that greatly increase their chances of happening again. "DDT and other life-saving pesticides have been banned globally." Why were they banned again?

Wow, commenting to comments on my blog is surreal. To Faith-Matters and who ever agrees. There is ample evidence that mankind has started this process. It is als simple common sense. First, I submit the common sense. Before the internal combustion engine, Power was generated more naturally- horses and hydro(water) for example. With the introduction of the steam engine which soon burned hydrocarbons such as coal primarily, CO2 production instigated by man started to increase. Now along comes the internal combustion engine which soon replaces the steam engine, This engine becomes burns hydrocarbons also, oil products. The CO2 production increases again and as the internal combustion engine gains popularity with its use in autos and such the levels of CO2 emited continue to increase-artificially- because people become dependent on their cars, trains(diesel), trucks, ships and buses to get around and to move commodities. As the number of these vehicles increase, so to does the levels of CO2 emited. Man made CO2 production. Add to that the deforestation (in quite a few cases by burning) of rain forests and old growth forests world wide, and one of the mechanisms that holds down the levels of atmospheric CO2 is weakened - as well - in the case of burning rain forests there is addional CO2 added to the atmosphere. Now on to scientific evidence of GW and likely consequences. Melting permafrost in Siberia - http://www.physorg.com/news5769.html, http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4120755.stm Glacial melting - http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/planetearth/pumpkin_planet_021205.html, http://www.commondreams.org/headlines02/0925-05.htm,http://www.innovations-report.de/html/berichte/geowissenschaften/bericht-15467.html Rising sea levels - http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/04/0420_040420_earthday.html, http://www.worldviewofglobalwarming.org/pages/rising-seas.html, http://www.aip.org/history/climate/floods.htm GW and weather -http://www.voanews.com/english/archive/2005-09/2005-09-20-voa49.cfm, http://www.ec.gc.ca/science/sandemay/article4_e.html There is plenty of research going into trying to comprehend and predict possible effects of GW. Also there are a few sites that still refute the science and early conclusions that GW is causing the climate change adversely. I don't understand except that perhaps those who don't realize or admit that GW is a fact may have vested interests. Oil companies are among the opponents of the science proposing GW is the major source of climate change. Something that causes me to worry also is something I read when I was learning about Chaos Theory (Non-linear Dynamics) and that is a stable non-linear system such as wweather when acted upon by forces which destabilize the current equilibrium will assume a different stability pattern once some threshold is exceeded. In othere words, a warmer Earth will have a different system of weather once it settles into another equilibrium and that wont happen until the GW levels off.

Global warming is the subject and responsibility of each and every individual. Unfortunately most of the people feel that how am i responsible for the global warming; but each and every living being has its role in further warming up of the globe. THERE IS NO CHANCE TO DISCUSS ON THE ISSUES ONCE THE IMPACT IS ON ITS WAY. worsening of the climatic conditions, raising of sea level, Frequesnt earthquakes, acid rains are the subjects and results of pollution, wars, Space intrusion, cutting down the trees etc....
