Venezuelan TV station Radio Caracas Television is going off the air  this Sunday at midnight after 50 years of uninterrupted programming thanks to our "friend" Hugo Chavez.  Their license really expires in the year 2020 but thanks to a law that Chavez himself invented he will unilaterally take them off the air for criticizing his undemocratic practices. One of its reporters was found dead yesterday.  Their have been widespread protests throughout  all major Venezuelan  cities. However, Chavez has threatened with now longer allowing public protests. Yesterday reporters demonstrated with a giant banner that read "SOS" .

Radio Caracas Television is a   public service  televsion station and is one of the few opposition  aligned stations left in the  country.  It  is  been famous for producing telenovelas (soap operas). Their last big soap opera hit was, " Mi Gorda Bella " ( My Pretty Fat Girl) now airing on Mexican TV station TV Azteca.  Its success was almost as big as " Betty la Fea" ( Ugly Betty) and it chronicles the life of a heavyset girl that is able to win the heart of her platonic love, despite her seemingly,  "ugly" appearance.

I'd like to see the Chavez fans on Soulcast defend this act of totalitarian abuse of power. Let's see what kind of logical contortions they have to perform so that they might somehow construe stifling dissension as an act on behalf of the People.

There was one Soulcaster who was willing to stick his neck out in calling Chavez a dictator some months ago and so many of the leftist bloggers around here jumped on him for it.

Seems that lone Soulcaster was the real voice of reason.

the executives of radio Caracas television have asked for help from Human rights watch and International dependencies that defend the rights of reporters with no results. They "hope" that the Venezuelan judicial system (which we know is controlled by Chavez might change its mind and do its job).

And about Chavez he might be somewhat "amusing" and a Bush critic. However that doesn't make him any better. All he does is point fingers, and carry out his bolivaran fantasies out in the most ridiculous manner. With his behavior he creates more enemies than allies. He might have petro- dollars and the support of much of the population but that doesn't make him a real leader. He is a joke. He is no caudillo no Bolivar no Castro. He  is a little man with luck.Who is the real " Mr Danger"  ?

Writer Mario Vargas Llosa says that the actions taken by Chavez  indicates that Venezuela is soon to become a totalitarian regime.

RCTV owner and director general Marcelo Granier on Wednesday published a letter in several newspapers saying the shutdown would mark Venezuela's passage "from a centralised authoritarian regime to a totalitarian regime."

"Allow other opinions to be voiced in Venezuela," he wrote.

"Are you a leader of the new Latin American left or are you a totalitarian populist? Are you strong because your convictions are strong or are you weak and need to silence all who disagree with you?" he asked Chavez.

"Who is in charge, Mr President, you or your aides who see a business opportunity in canceling contracts?" Granier asked.

I think you should read the other side of that story.  Although our mainstream media (as usual) is biased and pushing the One World Order agenda other media in the world are not so biased.  If you go to www.carolynbaker.org and www.upsidedownworld.org  perhaps you will see exactly what Chevez is doing for his country.  This particular radio station has been condemned internationally for explicit sex on it's station and many other things that have not received mainstream medias attention in  America.
  • taniatanfa said on May 28, 2007....
yes but because chavez wont allow "another side of the story and thats the pont. He is doing this when 80 pecent of the country doesnt agree with him. I  have been following the story through the mexican and european media  that are very critcal of Bush.  The pont is is that he isnt allowing  freedom of expression and tthat he is leaving 3000 people without work. He isn't even beeing a good socailist or comunist because under communism everyone is garrenteed work and I dont see that happening  with former RCTV employees. Instead of dialogue Chavez just likes to have it his way or the highway. He isnt even like castro. Castro is a Bastard but you cant deney he has his class and carisma but Chavez not even that he is vulgar. If he is so worried about setting a good example he should begin by watching his language. have you ever heard him? and the way he expresses himself about women. A shame. He doesnt even qualify as a benevolent dictator and If I say these things is because I heave follwed the man. story  I almost believed him but he is a disapointment
  • taniatanfa said on May 28, 2007....
and bad news for those of us that realy like two sides of the story I dont agree with its polar opsites chavez or in the US Fox news RCTV whent off the air yesterday and it is a shame where will those poeple work now. I even use to watch some of its progamming in the US and it was fun and witty.  I dont think that blocking artistic creativity or critcism will promote Venezuala's growth all great cpounties and empires have fallen when that happens and Censorship is also happinging in the US and I am aware and very sad about that too. One just has to see how the war in Iraq is covered in Mexico or Europe to see the diffference.
  • taniatanfa said on May 29, 2007....
Something else for the Chavez supporters out there so that you give it a think. Chavez repressed peaceful protests in support of RCTV first with tear gas then with rubber bullets and then with real ones. There are 10 injured.  Now can you say that the end justifies the means?
  • shiningstar said on May 29, 2007....
I still believe that Chevez is being talked up by mainstream media because he and 13 other nations are creating a coalition whereas they will no longer sell their oil for American dollars.  The dollar has fallen the lowest in it's history.  GW does not want that to happen so Chevez gets bad press.  Iraq is a prime example of what a few people can do with the news.  Here we go again,  I am afraid,  because we do not question and seek answers enough.
  • taniatanfa said on May 30, 2007....
I still think that he should allow people to say and do what they want that has nothing to do with mainstream media or the US it has to do with what his own country now thinks of him. He says that next on his "list" is Radio station Globovision, and any other muckrakers that decide to go against the Bolivarian Revolution . I dont think he should call the citizens of his country that. Didn't his own friend Fidel Castro say yesterday "Las ideas no se matan" (ideas are not killed).  Well with that belligerent attitude  he is loosing his people especially his base supporters which are students.
  • shiningstar said on May 31, 2007....
I watched a speech given by Al Gore last night where he reminded the people of the documented evidence of the suppression of facts on the mainstream news media.  Several years ago Barbara Walters,  Tom Brokaw and about five other news people had a sit down on primetime news and told the American people that no longer could they report the stories that effected any of the contributers or shareholders of any multinational corporations in a way that was not positive.  The ending of true news broadcasting in America was publicly announced that day.  Read Gerry Spence's book  "From Freedom To  Slavery" and any other of the 15 books he has written about the suppresion of news,  facts and information in America?  Freedom of speech is a myth in America my friend.
  • taniatanfa said on May 31, 2007....
thats just the point he wants to suppress the press that critiques him he confiscated all of rctv 's equipment saying it was property of the state.  To the right or to the left whom ever impedes freedom of speech is no good in my book. I don't agree with Chavez nor do I Like Bush I like honesty.  I still think that you are missing the point Chavez is betraying  like Fidel once did the people that believed in him especially the young crowed.  If Chavez were the redeemer he pretends to be why does he insist so much in silencing the voices that oppose him? If he were sure of himself he would not care do what he is doing he would accept criticism as part of his job and continue working for his people.  After all the press is the Fourth Estate isn't it?
  • shiningstar said on May 31, 2007....
You bring up some very valid points.  I can only say that,  from my point of view,  I see Chevez as trying something new by trying to free his people from USA and capitalists control.  Only time will tell if he is doing something that will work for the people or against them. I just know that those in control of the media get out what they want out and defaming one who is working to free themselves is not the story that they want told.
  • taniatanfa said on May 31, 2007....
he is creating enemies not allies his greatest enemy is himself his own mouth not anyone else in my view.

there is something wrong  with the link I will try and google it later. I saw the most funny parody. On the RCTV takeover on Mexican Televison the other day. It was on a Mexican program called "La Parodia" ( the parody) and the skit was called ," The "Hugo Chavez show". It had "Fidel"and "Ebo Morales" as guests. It posed a really funny and thought provoking  fictitious scenario. That was so funny OMG. What if Chavez were to star in his own talk shows Game shows (family feud that under Chavez would be called "Chavez o no Chavez haha), soap operas( dictators also cry haha), and even as (ha-ha I cried it was so funny!)as Sponge Hugo Square Pants.  The skit was anti Hugo and pro freedom of expression, but even if you are a Chavez supporter you would be in for a great laugh its not every day that you see Chavez as sponge Hugo  hahaha!

politicians suck don't they.  can't think of one to trust.  left wing right wing middle wing no wing.  what a bunch of useless pieces of crap.  how anyone can make a hero out of one of these jackasses is beyond me.

oh give me a leader to follow.  heil mein fuehrer.  ve vill support you til ze end.  you symbolize everything good in this world.

politicians are useless piles of manure.  i don't care what side they are on.

here comes the new boss.  same as the old boss.  won't get fooled again.  if you are criticizing the hell out of one of them, i'm in agreement.  if you are praising one of them, i think you have your standards too low.

some good ones.  teddy roosevelt.  abe lincoln.  john adams.  i'm running dry here.  i'm not familiar enough with the very early ones, maybe there were a few good apples, who knows.  hasn't been a decent good man in the white house since TR.  maybe john quincy adams was good, if the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.  maybe washington was good as president, who knows.
  • taniatanfa said on Jun 28, 2007....
now Chavez is using the soccer tournament "la copa America" the oldest soccer tournament in the world as a backdrop for his political propaganda he even changed the lyrics of typical Venezuelan songs to praise himself. Its disgusting. He says he admires Bolivar right well he is violating Bolivar's trigarente pact  at its core that really wanted the freedom of speech of the oppressed individuals of the 19th century Does Chavez  Really understand?. And Bush that SOB is using immigration reform to boost his approval ratings.  Even the now ex Prime minister Blair disappoints me. He was charismatic he offered economic prosperity to his people peace in Ireland but his vehement support of Bush with Iraq because " it was his historical duty" thats BS:(
  • taniatanfa said on Jul 12, 2007....

our goverment is the same Why the hell did the Bush gang supeanoa Moore now thats being an Evil doer !

  • taniatanfa said on Aug 02, 2007....
even if Chavez usurpates his functions as president and seeks to be in office indefinitely a miracle happened yesterday, the Venezuelan Supreme Court overturned his decision to not permit RCTV to air on cable isn't that great?
