I'm spring boarding here.  After reading all the responses from my last post I wondered just what kinds of music I'd see if I went through your collection.  Then I thought about mine.  Then I thought that someone would think I had multiple personalities if they did.  So, before I come to some other weird conclussion I thought I'd ask what the most "unique" CD (or other media) in your collection is.  (more than one if you got 'em)

I couldn't pick just one, so mine would be the gregorian chants CD, the Bugle Boy by the Andrews Sisters download and some of the heavy classic music.  I normally listen to soft rock, oldies, some country and certain alternative artists.

Unique? It's not music, but I have an audio recording of someone reading The Sensuous Woman.

My husband also has Grand Funk Railroad's Greatest Hits on vinyl.  What makes it unique is that the record isn't black.  It's bright yellow that you can see through.

  • uniquely-ironic said on May 18, 2007....

SW - sounds interesting (really).  Good to know about the bennington college thing, not that my son is in any danger of having grades good enough to get into college.

MissMimi - books on tape/CD have intrigued me, but I have yet to make the plunge.  I've seen vinyl in weird colors, they rock!  Who cares what's on them?!

  • Zayda said on May 18, 2007....
Gosh, responding to this is harder for me than the first one because I have such odd/eclectic tastes in music. Like you, U-I, I am sure that anyone glancing through my music selection would think I have a split personality. (Of course, my husband does contribute to our CD collection, but we have pretty similar tastes.)

Let's see, we'll just go with a handful of the CDs scattered on my desk at the moment:

    • Crossing Jordan Soundtrack
    • Josh Groban in Concert
    • Mickey Hart's Mystery Box
    • Songs and Artists that Inspired Fahrenheit 9/11:  A Compilation
    • Howard by Boxing Gandhis
    • Ronan Keating:  10 Years of Hits
  • uniquely-ironic said on May 18, 2007....
Zayda - I love Josh Groban's voice.  You do seem to have no set direction in the music catagory, but that is fun all in it's self.
  • Zayda said on May 18, 2007....
I don't know if I have no set direction. I do own every Bon Jovi album, for instance, and almost every Bruce Springsteen album. Our music collection is largely comprised of classic rock, (60s and 70s) as well as 80s and early 90s rock, but with pockets of country, metal, and classical.

Those just happened to be the CDs scattered on my desk at the moment.  ;)
  • silverwhisper said on May 18, 2007....
hm...other weird stuff in my collection: the soundtracks to the films backdraft, glory and zed for two naughts (?), all of which i own expressly for one reason alone: the tracks on those albums are the music used in the original japanese version of iron chef. :>

  • uniquely-ironic said on May 18, 2007....
Zayda - Oh!  Now I see a pattern.  I'm particularly fond of 80's stuff, but I have picked up a few of the newer bands.  I have even liked some of the stuff my son listens to.
  • hunter_boyce_chandler said on May 18, 2007....
I have a set of 78 speed records of Bing Crosby singing cowboy songs from the back of a horse.  The vinyl is very thick. I think it was designed for a Victrolla.  Very strange.
  • uniquely-ironic said on May 18, 2007....
SW - zed for two naughts?  I've never heard of it.  I think I have seen the American version of the iron chef.

HBC - It sounds more like a collector's item than music.  Those must be pretty rare.  Do you or have you listened to them?
  • jasonrest said on May 18, 2007....
I catch a lot of crap from friends both black and white about my love for trip hop.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trip_hop

Amogst the many talented bands, I truly enjoy BJORK, more so than I should I think. may be just an infatuation. her songs enable me to travel in my mind. It amazing.
  • evil_twin said on May 18, 2007....
Well, I like all kinds of music. Mostly I listen to rock or alternative type music and my collection reflects that. But I've got some embarrassing albums that I usually hide. Like Kenny Rogers, The Gambler. And I actually own a Barry Manilow CD. Please don't tell anyone I admitted that (I'm sure glad this place is anonymous...) But I'm sorry, Copacabana is an awesome song to play at a party. Everyone loves to hate that song, but it never fails to make people dance. I swear it.

JR - I had never heard of trip hop.  *sigh* now I will feel compelled to look into it when I'm at the music store.

ET - wow, you have some real zingers in there!  I can understand the Kenny Rogers, but the other one who will remain unnamed!!!!  I'm so embarrassed for you.  Go find "The Man Song" next time you're at the store. (don't remember who sings it)  You seem to have the kind of personality flaw that might enjoy it.
  • hunter_boyce_chandler said on May 18, 2007....
uiquely...Yes I played them and they sound like he has his head in a big tin can.
  • silverwhisper said on May 18, 2007....
u-i: it's a foreign film. in the original iron chef, they used several seconds of one track when they introduced one of the iron chefs (all had theme music, a leitmotif i suppose).

HBC - Awesome!  just like in the movies.  I had an aunt who inherited an old ranch with an attic full of turn of the century stuff.  We played the victrolla while trying on petticoats and bloomers.  Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

SW - I doubt I've seen the original.  Did they make another english friendly version?  I watch a lot of old japanese samurai movies.  I have about 1/3 of the Zatoichi series on DVD.

  • silverwhisper said on May 18, 2007....
nope, but the DVD comes with subtitles. :>

SW - I will treat myself to a copy next payday.  It will make a nice addition to my collection of weird but fun movies for someone like me to own.
  • silverwhisper said on May 18, 2007....
well, it isn't a particularly good movie--if you do netflix, throw it in the queue, but i wouldn't burn cash on it. the soundtrack is kind wacky too, truth be told. :>

SW - Is it really funky?  If so, don't worry.  So are the Zatoichi movies, but I like them too.  I was actually hoping to find a used copy cheap on amazon.
  • uniquely-ironic said on May 18, 2007....
GS - You sure are!  What is Sultan Khan & Zakir Hussain all about?  I think Yo Yo Ma rocks!
  • Expendable said on May 18, 2007....

I've got a cd called Chant, it's also a gregorian chant.

Eurythmics' 1984 movie soundtrack. I love "doubleplusgood".

I've got Quidam and a collection cd from Cirque du Soliel.

Some anime music cds and the pure moods cd.

  • uniquely-ironic said on May 18, 2007....
Expendable - Aren't the chants cool?!  When I'm up to here (imagine finger crossing neck) I like to take a hot bath with candles and chants.  Calms me right down.  I have pure moods too, good CD.  I'm not familiar with Quidam.
  • gingersoul said on May 18, 2007....

Gregorian Chants are amazing.....a friend of mine is a music teacher and she went for one week in a monastery in Italy to learn some singing tecnique from the monks...she gave me a cd they taped....mesmerizing...

Unique.....Enigma give a pretty good taste of them....i love them......

Btw, Sultan Kahn and Zakir Hussain plays raga, a mode, tune or song from the classic India music....raga is musical structure of 5 or 6 notes  that repeat themselves in a hypnotic mode.....it really cleans the mind.....

GS - I grew up by the ocean, so the sound of breaking waves is heavenly to me.

JR - You got it handsome!  I know you think I'm an old stodgy woman, but believe it or not I'm not adverse to making a trip to the big city (SF) to track down some interesting music.

Uniquely: there's just something so soothing listening to guys singing in Latin.

Quidam is the soundtrack from the Cirque du Soliel show. If you get Bravo, they show the performances sometimes.

Gingersole: show or movie soundtrack? Did  you see the movie?

  • gingersoul said on May 18, 2007....
Expen....i watched their show when they went here in Dallas... at the end of the show i HAVE to buy the cd....lol..
  • uniquely-ironic said on May 18, 2007....
Ex - Okay, I can listen to guys singing in latin.  I developed a taste for operettas when I worked in the ER.  I don't have anything now (my ex got them) but I may go down to Tower or something and see what they have.  I've noticed that you don't really need to know what they're saying if you just enjoy the beauty of the voice.
  • Expendable said on May 18, 2007....

GS: I saw Cats, know what you mean. I'd love to see them perform live.

UI: Mine was a cheapy I found at Staples. I like it just fine.

Public Enemy -- Fear of a Black Planet and It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back

    Digital Underground -- Sex Packets

I love these albums even though I'm not a big hip-hop or rap fan. But some of it sticks with me.

Ministry -- The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste and Psalm 69

I have wide-ranging tastes in popular music even though most of my preferences swing more towards country/blues/classic rock.

Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians.

In Canada you might be surprised to find the one and only Polka Dogs CD that was ever released (to my knowledge). They were (are?) a Canadian polka band with one mean tuba player. A friend of mine let me hear the CD back in 1990 and I really liked the lyrics and some of the trombone playing.

In Japan I have an incredibly mellow classical album composed by Jon Lord, the former keyboard player for Deep Purple. It's so mellow I can fall asleep listening to it. I also have two CDs by the Chinese group The 12 Girls Band. It features modern and traditional arrangements performed on traditional Chinese instruments.

All three types are music are outside of my usual rock guitar based choices.
  • pascodelta said on May 19, 2007....
My most out of place CD (that I can't find!) is by a Ghanaian living in Finland, singing Church songs in Swedish.  It is a cousin of a friend who gave me his 'latest'.

...and my most out of place cassette (showing my age) is Lucky Dube.  A popular Nigerian singer, singing reggae with an nigerian accent trying to sound like an american jamaican crossover with Shabba undertones.  Does that make sense?

pascodelta, that sounds bizarre enough that I would want to hear it, particularly the Nigerian reggae singer.

My collection (such as it is) consists mostly of classical music with a heavy emphasis on  the barogue period, then I have several vinyls from the sixties and seventies (mostly Carol King, Carly Simon, James Taylor, Paul Simon, Moody Blues, Emerson Lake & Palmer, ect.  The oddest might be a Kingston Trio vinyl from the early 50's as it doesn't seem to fit in with the bulk of my collection.  I have that one simply because it has the "How Much is That Doggie in the Window" track which holds childhood memories.  I can't seem to find it although!  Hmmm.

  • darkpearl said on May 19, 2007....
I don't have cd's I still listen to vinyl. I have over 400 albums including everything from Jan and Dean to Doug Kershaw (cajun music) to Guns n Roses. The strangest album would have to be War chants from African Tribes.
  • moonriver said on May 19, 2007....
unique music... uhmmm, let's see... i'd say, an mp3 collection of music from the era of china's cultural revolution, plus the full (2-cd set) version of the east is red opera. puyuma music. gong and chant music of certain asian tribes. an mp3 collection of works by guitar god jorma kaukonen. oh, and jan akkerman on guitar. does anybody still listen to akkerman nowadays? some gregorian chant cd's, although that's already  too mainstream, not really unique.

  • uniquely-ironic said on May 21, 2007....
OMG, what a diverse and unusual group we have here!  I'd really like to hear the war chants and I also love baroque.  I am moderately embarrassed to say that I know who the Kingston Trio is and in fact like the "how much is that doggy in the window" song too.
  • lfbno7 said on Jul 18, 2007....
i have pretty much everything ever recorded by ani difranco, dar williams, bob dylan, and the beatles.  i realize the last two are mainstream.  ani and dar are female folksingers and song writers.  i love intelligent lyrics.
