Im always hearing people saying those old wives tales and those old sayings,, and would like to know what sayings you like, or dislike, or you feel are wrong.. And have you changed them? my 3 are... 1 "Dont let the cat out the bag", which i think should be "dont let the cat "in" the bag in the 1st place". 2.."Theres more than one way to skin a cat", Which i think is a cruel and should be "theres more than one way to skin a "hat". 3 I hear many people saying, "practise makes perfect" which as we all know nothing in life is perfect and practise can only make better, so i say "practise makes better". Do you have any change of phrases? F-T http://icandyworld.blogspot.com http://hubpages.com/_http/profile/compu-smart

well, old wives tales are usually folk wisdom, so not quite the same thing as you're envisioning, i don't think...

i have favorite expressions which are usually quotations in part or in full from a film or TV show i've seen, such as my oft-used "gorram it" (firefly). i also tend to use the expression "having said that" more often than most.

hm...i need to think about this...

uhmmm i think old wives tales are like words of wisdom... most are metaphors not literal in meaning.

There are a lot, but the only one that comes to mind is "eat your vegetables so that you grow up big and strong".  I ate all kinds and the best I could manage was 5'6", which for a girl is only mediocre.  I was jipped!  It should be "eat your vegetables so that you grow up healthy".

we used to have this game we'd play walking home from school....and we'd chant...don't step on the crack or you'll break your mother's back'.

really, if you stepped on tripped on a crack in the sidewalk, you'd hurt yourself, and not your mother!

Dont let your right hand know what the left hand is doing, which to me mean, keep your business to yourself, what happen in the dark will come to lite, I dont know what it mean, my mom use to use it toward my sister and i, apple dont fall far from the tree, meaning, childrens are like there parents in turn of worth, tell the truth and shame the devil, mom knew when i was fabricating.

Kingcobra...lmao you crack me... Secret.. I used to play the "dont step on the crack" thing too but dident have the same mother expression and i have no idea why i did that.. Ed i still hear that phrase very often so i assume does work. southern..very wise words your mother tells, when you were talking about "dont let your right hand know what the left hand is doing" something else poped into mind hehe. Theres a saying...... theres 2 sides to every coin, meaning there are 2 sides to every story, argument etc but theres actually 3 sides to a coin meaning that each will have there own version of the truth but the 3rd side to the coin is the actual truth!..

One that I ALWAYS hated when I was a kid was the phrase--"Pretty is as pretty does."  How about "pretty is and does what she damn well pleases!!!".

One of my mother's favorites--"You can't get blood from a stone"

I believe as akin to folklore, many of these old wive's tales were made up by superstition--the crack in the sidewalk one is a good example, how about the old expression "Three on a Match"  everyone knew that was bad luck and prophesied that one of the 3 will die soon. And as I am of Irish descent (1/2), I always heard the one about always exiting a house at the same doorway you entered in, (it was believed that spirits/the dead could come in the house if you didn't).

holly lmao @"pretty is and does what she damn well pleases!!!". I know the old wives were doing a lot of sayings but i wonder what the husbands were actually saying! lol fly

Flytimes, I disagree with there being 3 sides to a coin, coin top is having a problem with coin bottom, "truth" stand alone, bottom and top could'nt both win the judgements, "justice" way and rule on both top and bottom cases just to show that truth stand alone. It is some truth in these tales, "turn around 3 time when you see a black cat going to the left, or you will have bad luck, i almost got hit by a car trying to avoid crossing the trail of the black cat. that would have been bad luck.

Hi Marysaaka, I understand, slightly about your points you made so ill agree to disagree.. i hope you can agree.I am also wondering what all the owners of black cats who are superstitious cope! Fly
