I'm reading a book called "Blink: the power of thinking by not thinking" by Malcolm Gladwell as part of my summer stuff.  There's a lot of discussion about using instinct to make decisions and how often those choices are correct.  Amazingly the percentages are as good or better than when a person does exhaustive research and analysis to come to a decision.

While I've always given my intuition a lot of credit, this surprises me.

One study had people view the room of a person and then answer questions about their personality.  Then they had people meet with the person (different people) and answer questions about their personality.  The people who viewed the room had a higher rate of answering correct than the ones who met the people.

What three things would people deduce about you if they could view your house/apartment/room?  I think people would know how important family is to me, that I'm creative and that I am more concerned with people than things.

    1) that i like things neat - everything has it's place and there's very little clutter

    2) that my family is most important to me - pictures everywhere

    3) that our lifestyle is casual

  • silverwhisper said on May 17, 2007....
considering it's been decorated/maintained by the mrs and myself, that's hard to say, but off the top of my head, i'd say: eclectic, likes to read, loves food.

SL - I had sensed that family was big with you just through our blog conversations.  How would I know your lifestyle is casual?  through style choices?

SW - I'm not surprised by the read part, and even the food makes sense.  Do you have unusual items in your home that would lead me to believe you're eclectic?
  • silverwhisper said on May 17, 2007....
i was referring to the fact that the furniture isn't in sets. i'll confess i haven't really been interested in having a unified look in the furniture thus far. :>

yes, the furniture is on the large scale since my rooms are large, but very comfortable... there's nothing formal about it...and everything here was meant to be used by everyone.

and as i type this i'm thinking that i have wanted to replace my dining room set for years to one that is more traditional and formal.......lol but that project never seems to take center stage...

likes to read (i'm surrounded by books)

    family is very important

has eclectic tastes/style--the only "set" furniture we have is our bedroom furniture, but even two pieces in the bedroom don't belong to the set; the rest is a mix of newly purchased furniture and antique pieces that were my grandmothers'; the "decorations" (for lack of a better term) are from various places we have lived/traveled so there is a mix of southwestern and asian influences, among others.
  • uniquely-ironic said on May 17, 2007....
SW and SL - furniture is much more interesting when it doesn't match.  I've always thought when everything matched that it looked kind of "blank".  I love big comfy couches, overstuffed if you can manage it.

Zayda - I think my comments above apply to you too.  I love looking at someone's book collection.  Some are very organized and others seem to pop up here and there, piled in stacks, a few on shelves.  It gives you a good idea of what their mind is like.

    Unique.....you would see that

i have an ecletic taste for decorating ...i love pieces and accessories from different countries..... lots of dark wood, blue, flowers and mirrors....

i love to read (my books are everywhere, and i tend to judge a person more from their library than from their furniture, actually)

i like taking pictures (they are everywhere about my families and my trips)

i like art  (i have paintings and drawings on the walls)

    i am casually elegant

    i like old maps

And if you will come to my kitchen you will see my pantry is equally full of food of any nationality...

  • gingersoul said on May 17, 2007....
Oops, i went overboard..i forgot you wanted only 3 details...LOL...
  • uniquely-ironic said on May 17, 2007....

rock - so do you like outdoors? (kidding)   Somehow I get a mental picture of mountain bikes and rock climbing gear littered by dirty socks.

expendable - So what would happen if you were forced to live in a large room? (curious)

gingersoul - I'm not surprised with the food aspect.  I am curious about your old map fetish.  Is it that you like the way they look, or do you like to see "how the world used to be"?

  • gingersoul said on May 17, 2007....

Unique....i like old maps...the ones who look faded, broken, with the old Latin names of the places....i liked them because my father used to have them hanging in his studio ......

I have a big one on the wall behind the couch...i framed it with a old looking, distressed almost golden wooden frame...

I like them because they give me a sense of home, of continuity, a connection with history, and they are beautiful objects...

  • uniquely-ironic said on May 17, 2007....
gingersoul - Sounds really lovely.  I guess that could lead me to believe that you are a sentimental soul, if I didn't already know you.

Eilan - but what kind of slob?  I know that sounds silly, but there are at least two kinds of slobs.  Those that throw everything around, and those who have organized chaos.
  • uniquely-ironic said on May 17, 2007....
skald - do you keep a tidy house, or do things "get away from you" ?  Do you have live plants, or do silk plants survive better?  These things all add up.

  • skald said on May 17, 2007....
I keep my house tidy, other people leave things around. Yes I keep plants. There are  books, a piano things of intrest. I think this is a house where people live, one can see that.

Well, if someone walked into my apartment they'd know I was single. I have pictures of movie posters on the wall. So that would probably tell people I love movies too. Along with my enormous DVD collection. And they'd know I like to read because I've got shelves of books on the wall too.

Forced to live in a large room? Not much would change. I like having things close by. Maybe set up a desk and a proper sewing table. Some shelves for books.

All the photography art books would give away my interest in landscape photography.

All the CDs would reveal my taste in music and that I prefer to buy original CDs over downloading music.

The half-organized clutter on my desk and shelves would be an indicator that I am always halfway through something and too preoccupied to properly put things away.

    1. I have a somewhat relaxed attitude about housekeeping
    2. Comfort is more important than style.
    3. I'm organizationally challenged. In my defense, I have to point out that I usually know where in the clutter a specific item is.

people would know that I am a girlie girl.

They would see that I have collections of different types of things....my favorite, flying pigs...

They would see that we have a teenager who knows no bounds in where to leave her trail of clothes....and frankly from the long strands of hair on her bathroom floor after all morning straightening or curling....they would suppose she is bald by now.

  • hotaka said on May 18, 2007....
gingersoul, you are casually elegant. I like that. I really like that. And old maps! I once saw a beautiful replica of an old map of the Kingdom of Denmark that included Norway, parts of Sweden and northern Germany. I wanted to buy it but it turned out to be a book cover. I love maps. They don't have to be old. I pour over maps and memorize places, imagining what I can find there.

Any museum i visit the section that always fascinates me is the one showing old maps.....British Museums had some years ago when i visited that were absolutely stunning......

huge or small, it doesnt mind....i like them because they are so imaginative..as you said....

You can trace all those old routes of old ships discoverig new lands or in the new ones i love to plan my own trip......

so.........when are we leaving? and which one is the route?....lol..

What does our place tell about us? Well, firstly that we sure ain’t rich. Our furniture is almost all second hand, put-together-yourself or do-it-yourself, sometimes from scrap wood and cast-off materials. This says that my husband is not a bad basic carpenter and that he has a good imagination. Our drapes are all handmade, some out of one enormous bedcover we got second-hand from my mother-in-law about 30 years ago. That shows that I can more or less sew a hem.

Our record collection, yes records, show that we are over the hill, our tapes—that we are into lots of types of music, and our music CD’s—that we are nostalgic for the 60’s and even for the big bands, especially Glenn Miller, who were popular even before we were born.

Our books show that we are eclectic. While we have a good basic library of Judaica, we have also a general reference library and one shelf of Rowling’s wonderful novels. She has replaced Tolkien for our 'knocked-out-from-the-flu' reading material.

The fact that one room is an office shows that we work at home, and a collection of electrical and electronic instruments—that my husband is still a licensed electrician if not a practicing one. There are very few teaching materials, and they are all packed away, so maybe it's now a secret that I was a teacher once upon a time.

Oh, and our kitchen shows that we love to cook, and our big (unfortunately North) window that although we are now in an apartment, we can’t help trying to grow things, and would love having a garden again.

This blog took on a life of it's own after I went home yesterday.  I posted this on a whim, but am now very glad that I did.  I feel like I got a peek into many peoples lives and got to know them better.

One thing that popped up a lot was that the people here seem to have a love of books, music and computers. (well, I did expect the computer thing)  That speak to me of intelligence and curiosity.

I'll be honest.  As much as I'd like to respond to you individually I'm just too low on energy today.  I do want to thank everyone who participated.

  • gingersoul said on May 18, 2007....

Sorry you have a low energy day...some chocolate, a good strong coffee, green tea and ginseng might give you a boost...eat some protein......relax........:-)
