My last day in my Race, Culture, and Media class, we read a handout from the Chicago Tribune from a couple years about this 14 year old Caucasian male being beaten and robbed when he was in a certain neighborhood, and when they asked about these boys why did this crime, they said, " Because he was a goofy-looking white boy." I was thinking that do Caucasians hate being called "white."

Well, I happened to be listening to Judge Judy when I forgot to change the channel.  I didn't see the TV, but the defendant called the plaintif "white boy" and Judge Judy went MENTAL on him!  Saying it was a "racist remark" and threw him out of the court room!

Personally, I haven't ever given it much thought.  I don't know how to answer!

Well, it's better than cracker.  I don't think the words are offensive, it's the context.
  • pete said on May 17, 2007....
No.White people as a rule are way too busy with life to put any thought into what will offend them and black people don't think it is possible to be racist against whites. So,as a result the only way for it to be a slur is if you are calling a black guy "white boy".Things have become so confusing,it no longer is as simple as black and white. Is "black boy" a slur? How about "white girl","black girl","chinese boy"?For Christ sake why don't we all refer to eachother as numbers?Call me white boy,you may sound like an ass but it is a fairly accurate discription except I haven't been a boy in years.Furthermore,if you were beating the shit out of me,I would be alot more pissed at the beating than the name calling(its all about priorities).I don't care why an innoccent person gets thrashed black, white, gay doesn't the act alone classify it as a hate crime?I for one know who I am and I sleep well at night I have not been offended by any name calling since I was 8.We are about a day way from not being able to describe anyone without being labeled a racist. Can someone please stop the sensitivty, political correctness,be nice even if they don't deserve bullshit.

Have you found any men yet MsBradford? I really don't know where one
goes to look for men, or women for that matter. I used to go to the bars,
but I got drunk too often too.

This racial thing, white boy, or being called white. Nah, never bothered me,
come to think of it, I don't remember anyone calling me white, whitey or
    white boy.

You know, there is too much sensitivity out there about this shit. I have
to tell you MsBradford. If someone calls me any kind of name, I don't mind
    if it's done without malice.

But, if someone, anyone, white, black or pink, takes to calling me names
in a hurtful or nasty way, I'm going to take it in a bad way. Know what
I mean? thanks MsBradford, .........good post.

I believe it is a racial slur because of the intent when it is said. People who say it are attempting to diminish white men to being a "boy." They have a veiled anger towards white men. I don't get the empression white men care much about what other races of men think of them...which is a good thing.
  • pascodelta said on May 18, 2007....
It is true that any 'name' is offensive, if used with malice; even if it is an accurate description.  However, I have heard 'white boy' be used derogatorily many times and so when I hear it, that does tend to be the impression I get.  Like a 180 on the 'old school' racists that called black men 'boy'.

The problem being, that if we were to relax and be less 'anal' about these types of racial slurs in public life, as a society, we would start going backwards again.
  • thenack said on May 18, 2007....
Well, as with most of these things its context. Rappers calling each other nigga are not using it as a racial slur, while if say Charles Darwin said it, he meant it in a very bad way. Anyway, white is really as stupid as black, we are all just different shades of melanin colour. The problem with this is it doesn't sound cool, but I think its more practical than numbering, we could call people 80% melanin boy or 10%melanin boy. This would be absolutely scientifical and therefore removing al possibility of offense. Well I'm getting my caucasionboy ass out of here
  • tbs230 said on May 18, 2007....
Well, first off, he was a white boy, emphasis on the boy part, seeing how he was 14. As for the term white, I only think it seems like a racial slur because on the other side of the fence, to say that you beat a kid up because he was a "goofy-looking black boy" would automatically be considered racist.

I call people white all the time. And I still get a little hesitant when I have to point out a Black person in a crowded room. I mean, it's a ridiculous double standard, but with so many issues with what to call Black person, it always becomes a race card.

I don't remember when, but this white boy (see?) was beaten up by a couple of black kids, and somehow they managed to turn it into a race thing, when all it really was, was kids retaliating for some gang nonsense. It's a very stupid.

And if I was on that Judge Judy show, and she was trying to kick me out, I would have asked what the appropriate turn would be to call the individual, since she seems to know so much. People like that just perpetuate the problems.
  • pete said on May 19, 2007....
Does anyone notice that the only people who are referred to by color are Americans?
e.g. If you were telling a generic story, you would say "he's Italian, she's Jamaican or Irish or Somalian",if in fact the person was born there and spoke with an accent.White or black would not be the first thing that came to mind.People say that I'm white and that my best friend is black because we are both American and that is simply how you would decifer the difference,"he's the white guy or he's the black guy",no harm,no foul.

Well, if someone who I venture to say is way different at face value than me and who has many different experiences than I do agrees with me,than it says something about us both. Thanks for restoring some of my faith in future generations, you make an attempt to not be closed to the opinions of others. There are plenty of things that I must say that more than likely irritate the hell out of you, yet, you still read all that I say with an open mind. That is very refreshing to see. What ever the results of your finals, you will reap many benefits in life with your attitude, never follow blindly or make assumptions, ask valid questions and listen to the answers. Very refreshing, indeed.

I never cared what I was called.  If I am called white,or white girl, I don't care cause that is what I am. If someone wants to call me a cracker, that don't bother me either, it makes me laugh.

I love black comedians, and when they have made jokes about whites, I have thought they were very funny.

No, but as someone with Native ancestry who doesn't look 'Native', I am sometimes bothered by the racism of Natives.  The majority are not like this.  I sympathize with someone off the reserve.  Some of the girls I worked with were only part-Native, maybe 1/4 or so, and made rude, racist comments to me about the inferiority of white people, assuming that I was white.  I do not care to define myself or anyone else by race.  The Chinese I have worked for have never said anything of the sort to me.  There is a language barrier, perhaps, but with them, you know they have another culture and are immigrants.  Natives have dealt with whites for 500 years.

I am not against the land claims process or financial compensation.  This doesn't bug me.  I am bothered by comments that because 'I'm white, I won't work for five dollars an hour. I am too good.'  White culture is 'materialist, selfish and too individualistic.'  'Whites will never do anything for you.' 'Whites won't work on farms.'  'Whites think they're too good for this job.' 'Whites don't stay because they can't work with us Natives.'  I have little time for this.  Hearing those comments and others tells me that they have a problem and can't get over it.  I like to get on with life.  I was never mean to them.  I would understand if someone was racist towards them, but honestly, in this town, nobody cares.  The Natives run their own affairs and are treated as equals.  It isn't like that everywhere.  They are a group amongst other groups.

I never heard the term "racist" till I came to the US, though I was a child of latino decent I've really never had to deal with racism. My father was a white man, my mom a Latin woman, I was born in South America but mostly raced here in the US. I came here when I was a child, and never even knew the term racist, until I moved to Wyoming. That's when my father called some sob neighbor a f*cking racist. Cause he PO my father with some comment he made, and dad told us never to mess with that SOB and that was the end of that! My brothers two whites one brown, my sis more white, and mom and I brown. So calling someone "White boy" is only racist by the context it is used. No one ever called by beaner, some tried calling me a wet-back! I didn't even know the meaning of the term till we moved to Texas. Then if someone called me a wet-back, I answered I flew buddy, I come from South America, ti's a long way to swim on my back! LOL

    Ms.Bradford,

I love academia because this is where I learned the value of being culturally competent. You pose an interesting question regarding racial slurs. My pastor mentioned on several occasions in so many words, "...irregardless of what they call me, I am not that which they say".

Yes, definitely! I have lived in enough all black (save for me) getos to know what is meant when it is used. It is the word "BOY" which is meant to be degrading, meaning that one is less of a man. If referring to a white man of substantial size, then the person may be upgraded to honkie. You can be in your 30’s and still be labeled a White Boy.

Side note: I thought White Boy was my name when I was a kid growing up in "The Hood." I guess it also means "I don’t care to know you or your name."
