An eye for and eye, tooth for a tooth, if your right hand offend you, cut it off, all these body part missing, What would promote you to want to implore these acts against another human.
Your confusing different religious quotes that are so far opposite each other that mixing them together is pretty much lying.
An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth is for starters supposed to be a limitation, a maximum fine, not a decree. You must remember these are people who formally would have killed each other, this is a step in a positive direction.
If your right hand offends you is if YOU commit a sin, just as you are supposed to pluck out your own eyeball if you start checking out women other than your wife.
I am still trying to figure out a reply to the statement that you just made, SeanRenaud, I all the time become a clog blogger when fact with facts that I find hard to process.
SeanRenaud, when I post the blog, I did'nt have in mind, the bible thought on these phrases or statements I was thinking in term of having blogger give reasons for that type of justice, one would implore on another if that truth is broken, concerning your first statements, I dont think that I am confusing the two because "eye for an eye" is the same as "tooth for a tooth" they both stand for justice, and If your right eye offend you pluck it out, I dont think there is a diferences between eithers statements, they all mean the same, now that is to me. Justice.
Eye for an eye = tooth for a tooth. We are in agreement there.
But if your right eye offends you isn't a punishment for somebody else, its a punishment for yourself. Its like saying if your whiskey makes you stupid throw away your liquor.
SeanRenaud, I am glad we sort throught the first part of your comments, now "if your right eye offend you then pluck it out", in that statement you are still justifying the soul for the injustice that your right eye had cause you, and that is to have sin, you are still look for justice to avoid the wages of sin which is death and the only way you avoid death is to pluck out the bad seed, which is the eye. Thank you for your comments.
Another way to look at these sayings is that if what you are seeing is offending you or someone else change your vision or the stress will get you. Or as in the tooth, if something inside your mouth(words) offend or are offending do not do that any more. The people that wrote these saying were probably simple, uneducated people who did not intellectualize things and kept them simple.(Unlike those of today in the western world I might add)
It takes a certain degree of sophistication to speak in riddles.
Really more to the point because they weren't simple, nor were they uneducated (the authors were scholars, reading and writing weren't common skills until quite recently) they are very clear when they are speaking in figurative terms. They use terms like as many children as grains of sand in the desert or stars in the sky. When Jesus speaks in parables he makes it clear that he is telling a fable and not recounting a historical fact.
I swear to the gods that don't exist your a very confused aetheist. Either that or your Gnostic and don't know it.
Ha-Ha. I do not consider simple, uneducated people idiots sir. Nor Have implied or said that. Jesus spoke in parable that are very easy to understand once you drop the belief that Jehovah or Jesus is God and begin to reason them.He was not telling a fable. What would be the use in that or the teaching? Use reason and logic and the door will open. Those who did the writing were, indeed educated, but they used the common language of the peasants so as to be understood by them, my friend.
He was not telling a fable. What would be the use in that or the teaching?
Obviously you've never read or heard The Boy Who Cried Wolf, The Ant and the Grasshopper, the Tortise and the Hare or countless other fables if you don't think they have a use in teaching. Fables have a very well established place in teaching, particularly in teaching morality.
Not to mention the fact is that if Jesus is not the son of God then he is a liar. So uh your entire philosphy is built on the idea that if Jesus lied about the one thing that truly set him apart from every other human being in history then we should assume that everything else he said is absolute truth. Do you not see how there is NO logic at all in that statement?
There is a difference between a fable and a parable, my friend. The parables are teachings. Just because you have not found the meaning in them is not my fault. They are precious pearls of wisdom hidden from those who linger on the outside failing to look a little deeper. Jesus gave them in such a way so each person would have to comptemplate for themselves for truth is personal yet the universal truth is there also.Jesus never lied about anything. I hold him in highest regard and know he said he is the son of God just as all are sons and daughters of God, just not Jehovah god.Just because the Bible SAYS something does not make it true unless one understands the perception intended. Meaning of course the writers of the religious books want you to believe that their icon is the ONE AND ONLY SAVIOUR OR SON OF GOD. That is all they've got but it does not make it true. How would we do the greater things than Jesus did if we were not all equal to him?
Perhaps Jesus lived in Alaska and walked on the ice.Ha Ha. I did not say we had lived up to the faith that he had in us to do the greater things. But I know that if we understood what he came to teach we would all do the greater things but religion has so altered the teachings one is hard pressed to dig them out of the confusing writings they have created. There are many persuing the Christus Path and gaining the knowledge to do the miracles. It takes knowledge. Einstein said that imagination was greater than knowledge meaning that is one can imagine it creative, Divine, Intelligence will produce a way to do it.Knowledge is not found in religon. Following is their product. Jesus did not come to teach sheep. He came to keep them from being slaughtered. His way would free them but they refused to change, to let go of the old and so they kept the Jehovah way not the Jesus way. Not much has changed. Everyday people are led to the slaughter in one way or the other. People believing in someone or something and losing their money, their retirement, their homes, their paychecks, Banks taking advantage of people and credit card companies. The corporations of the world who destroy the world and it's people for a dollar. Taking power back is about changing these things. If we do not what world will we give to our children and those after them? To me, better to learn a better way and what Jesus taught is , to me, a better way.
SR and SS, i truly enjoy reading the comments between the both of you, they gave me a lot to think about in my comparison of the "saying". You know, you never get to old to learn. Sorry i was so long in responding, i had to pick up my face.
southerngirl; It is a good post if any one any where learns anything. Yes-s-s? For me the orginal post and question was about wondering why these things were said and the purpose behind them. Obviously if you child saw something that offended or knocked one's tooth out you would not then knock his tooth out or tear his eye out of it's socket????Would You???HA! So there is more meaning here than the physical doings.I believe it mens that if you are seeing things that do not help you uplift your self then don't look at those things anymore. Just like molestors they look at porn and see bodies with lust. These things are all under the control of the self. But when one keeps on doing these things eventually they do get out of control. An eye for an eye was/is the teachings of Jehovah that kept all people at war with each other. Who has not done something that offends another one? But if you build on that you will have non stop wars in the homes and countries. Jesus brought the gift of love that offers forgiveness the opposite of the eye for an eye teachings. He taught to make peace with your enemy before night falls and he said to many to be not offended by what he taught for he wished no enemies for himself.
SS, in the event that a molestor hurt my child, i would implore the "eye for as eye"
any measure of gettting even for the harm that he has cause my family, i see all those "quote" as being "justice" with a measure of respect for the other parties involued, i feel that this was the first form of law, in the primtive form, which still goes on in today soceity even thou it is illegal and you are subject to court procedures if you hurt someone because they hurt you or your family. Forgiveness, back in the day came with a price, i think, greater than today price.
SG I do so agree. I think that those hurt and their familes should be the ones who decide what should be done to the offender because it happened to them. This also makes justice personal which we have gone so far away from.Peace
I've been struggling lately with my masochistic side. I just wanted to blog it out because that always helped in the past. I am one confused chick....read entire post8 comments
