I can't believe I forgot my own birthday!

My brother surprised me when he called me very early in the morning to wish me a happy birthday.

Interestingly, it happens every year these days, it seems - either my parents/siblings give me a surprise gift/visit/call or my wife and kids do the same once I wake up in the morning!

It's amazing really - I tend to remember it about a week before but forget it totally on the eve of the day; unless I am in an introspective mood, friends and/or family give me a card earlier on, or my wife insists on wishing me a loving happy birthnight beforehand! Haha - very lucky me, eh?

Do you usually feel surprised whenever you are wished a verbal happy birthday or receive a birthday card on your birthday?

Are you ever ready/prepared for your B-Day? Is it important or significant to you in any special way?

Do you remember the date a few days, weeks, or months before the actual day, and then forget it on the eve of the B-DAY?

If your memory loss with regard to your birthday is due to worries about whether or not your 'number' is up, Gina Kolata says as follows, as also echoed a bit differently in the theme song "DON'T WORRY, BE HAPPY":

"Mathematicians have a joke that the way to live forever is to choose a problem that is so important that you cannot die until you solve it. Then never work on it."

SO, DO YOU ALWAYS REMEMBER YOUR BIRTHDAY OR SOMEONE ELSE USUALLY REMINDS YOU?

DO YOU NORMALLY CELEBRATE YOUR BIRTHDAYS? WHO USUALLY REMEMBERS YOUR BIRTHDAY?

WHAT HAPPENS AND WHAT DO YOU DO ON YOUR BIRTHDAYS?

WHAT ABOUT ANNIVERSARIES - DO YOU EVER FORGET?

hey, happy birthday, bronx! i've asked folks to stop by and wish you a happy one. :>

to answer your questions: i used to forget but it's becoming more difficult b/c the mrs always asks me how i want to observe mine. and i'm good at remembering b-days and anniversaries--at least, the ones involving me, anyway. :>

Happy birthday, Bronx! I wish you the best of health and good fortune.

I have a great memory for numbers. I'm that kind of person, the one who remembers birthdays better than names and faces. I could walk up to someone I haven't seen in several years, point and say "Heeeyyy, it's you, June 13th!"

PS It's nice to meet ya!

Happy Birthday Bronx! I hope yours is a really special day.

In some strange synchronicity I just posted about my upcoming birthday so yes I suppose I do remember it but no it's not really celebrated. Very few people remember my birthday and most times it is just a day like every other.

I mostly remember birthdays of those I hold dear and mark it at the very least with a card or other communication.

Happy Birthday, Bronx! I brought the birthday paddle with me. How many swats this year? :D

    Happy Birthday!!!

I don't always remember it on the day, but usually at some point during that month I try to figure out how I want to spend the day.  My son's birthday is exactly a week after mine, so I'm usually all hyped up about planning his.

I'm very good at remembering anniversaries.  I don't have a lot to remember, which probably helps.  I usually don't do an elaborate celebration, but rather a small intimate dinner or something.

Happy birthday Bronx.  I hope this will be a very good birthday for you.

I don't remember my birthday weeks before it. But I remember it. I don't always celebrate it.  My nearest to me emembert it always.

    Happy happy birthday Bronx!!!!

I never forgot my birthday, nor the birthdays of my immediate family. Usually, I spend my birthday going to church, and then I invite my family out to dinner, and then my friends. I am not used to celebrating my birthday lavishly.

yes i always remember my birthday... how could i forget when i always fill up forms asking for my DOB... birthdays are always celebrated by my family we usually have dinner out and some gift giving. But it is hard to keep track with those outside the immediate family.

It's hard to forget your birthday when you were born on the

Fourth of July. Happy Birthday Bronx.

Oh, I wasn't born on the 4th, just reflecting that that one would

    be hard to forget haha.

I've never forgotten my birthday, but it seems, since I haven't been around much, I almost missed yours!

    Big Happy Birthday Greetings, Bronx!

Happy Birthday, Bronx!  I hope it was a memorable one!

I look forward to my birthday every year, and tell my loved ones that they have so many shopping days left a week ahead of time.

Harried:  I'm the same way!!!!  I'm really bad at remembering names, but I still remember peoples' birthdays whom I haven't seen or heard from in 40 years!  Go figure!
  • GrapeKoolaid said on May 17, 2007....

Wow, wow....thanks, everyone...so sorry I couldn't drop in earlier on.

SL: that's quite unique - I just love twins, can't explain it. Cheers.  : )

SW: I am speechless, greatly humbled - as some people say, in awe, 'right after the  incumbent President, it's you who reigns!' ; )

    Alyss: thank you.

May your own birthday be blessed with everything you wish for! Cheers.

    Zayda: thanks so very much....

MissMimi: haha...on that note, it's just too painful to remember right now, you know.....
  • Bronx said on May 17, 2007....
U-I: that's an amazing coincidence - my son's birthday comes almost a week after mine too, and I leave the celebration of mine to my family to organize.

    skald: thank you very much....

    Holly: thank you.

3 June birthdays! that's interesting - I used to have a neighbor whose birthday parties I never really attended.....haha...

We were close friends but we both had birthday parties on the same day!
  • Bronx said on May 17, 2007....
ginger: hi. Thank you - I'll try to read myself more often. : D

So sorry to hear about that....not to worry, some years are better than others for everyone....

Lioness: thank you .....no, lavishness is really uncalled for in adulthood, unless one has a point to prove to someone or something else altogether...Cheers.

sweet: yes, it's difficult to keep track of B-Days of non-family members sometimes.

Reminds me of how craming phone numbers used to be easy as a kid - but with business associates, lod/new friends built up in adulthood, a Rolodex and a computer became essential to keep track of them all.

    CW: Thanks.

But no, that can't be right - surely, not every year, your folks must have given a ring or two?

  • Bronx said on May 17, 2007....
mobil: haha....that's a good one - nearly had me there! Thanks.

wombat: thanks, glad to have you around again!

blast: thanks...haha...that's really giving them a hint they couldn't miss even if they tried.

Strangely enough, over the years I've found that I am better at remembering faces than names, unless something unforgettable was associated with the name.

Grape: that's okay....thank you very much....no problems - the day was memorable, spent with my family mainly.

  • Bronx said on May 17, 2007....
SW: yep....definitely prolific, and terrific too, IMHO.
