short version: the “reverend” jerry falwell is dead. the cause of death of the highly controversial ultra-conservative preacher/political figure is as yet unknown, although he was hospitalized last year for congestive heart failure. long version here.

commentary: there's an old tradition of not speaking ill of the dead. it's something that i've never really understood. after all, it's not as though the deceased will much care. sure, sensitivity to the bereaved—i get that, that’s just good manners. but not speaking the truth of someone because he or she isn’t around anymore? i’ve never quite gotten that.

but i will choose to respect it, at least for now. suffice it to say that i think that falwell had a whole lot more influence than was good for this nation.

I was kind of sad to hear this, but we all must pass eventually. I won't speak ill of the dead, but I'm still interested to know whether his version of the afterlife matches with his expectations.

My belief is that they don't but also that he is totally unaware of it. Being dead and all.

However since I believe that people live on in the memories of those left behind, maybe he has found his promised land.

Let's be clear about one thing.  Falwell wasn't about spreading morality, he was about building a power base.

Jerry Falwell is dead? Break out the beer and the drugs and the loud rock music and the hot sluts with back tattoos! Make sure the hos flash their tits at the moral majority! The old guard is crumbling. The new generation won't stand for this evangelical bullshit anymore. Not everyone is racist, homophobic, and fascistic, and that's the truth! It's a big bad world out there and there is too much room to be confined by the nonsense that this old white man spewed for so many years! Good riddance. I hope he has a good time in his heaven sitting in the "straight whites only" section playing his lyre! Jimi Hendrix, Gandhi, John F. Kennedy, Thomas Jefferson, Jim Morrison, Bach, Rimbaud, Paul Gaugin, Alexander the Great, and Socrates are all surfing the lake of fire as we speak, and I am pleased to say that within the span of several decades I will be joining them! Bring your surfboard, you sinners! -Boon

OK, i'm done respecting that belief.

d6, don't be a doofus. remember the stupidity falwell spewed? claiming 9/11 was god's retribution for immorality, or that AIDS was god's punishment for gays? the man was a hate-filled bag of pus a lot of the time.

While my life philosophy and Falwell's were diametrically different, I won't speak ill of the dead, not even now.

He was a polarizing force for the Christian right, and yes, he spread bigotry, but I, personally, feel for the loss his family is experiencing, despite how I felt about his view on religion, social, and political matters.
  • TinSoldier said on May 16, 2007....
I think it is interesting how even public figures who were opposed to him still had nice words to say about him as a person despite his public political stances. People like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, and others.

I don't think that Bush is particularly a "Jesus Freak". In fact, I've seen new reports that the administration has been pretty cynical about tugging on the religious right's beliefs purely for political gain.

D6fer, good point. The man stood up for his beliefs, wasn't affraid of YOUR opinions and lived his life doing what he believed was best for other people. I have no clue who this guy was, but he sounds for the most part at least to be congruent to his beliefs.

9/11 and AIDS etc. and his interpretations of that was probably a ver small fraction of his lifelong work and to point to one or two of these is just childish. Besides, 9/11 appart. NO ONE WOULD EVER GET AIDS IF EVERYONE ADHERED TO GODS WORD ON THE ISSUE OF SEX. Sin will hurt either you or someone else, always! So even if God did not intervene supernaturally on this one, AIDS is a direct result of sin.

Then again, I only know what I read here now about him so....what I do no is he got on a lot of your nerves which I find quite amusing. If you only believe in love and not in God why do you even care what he says. d6: b/c if you remember your bible, god promised not to flood the earth again. given that apart from the plagues of egypt he hasn't done anything of the sort, it seems that god has taken a kinder, gentler turn. homosexuality barely registers on the sin list, and you know it.

nack: people also died of AIDS-related complications from blood transfusions and from drug use, you ignorant schmuck.

  • thenack said on May 17, 2007....
Silver, it (AIDS)  would never have spread to the point where people get it in blood transfusions if people never behaved immoral, read before you rant. Statistically speaking it would have been a much smaller problem if less people behaved immoral. Now do you really want to argue with that? I don't believe that AIDS is a specific curse on gay-people, but I do stand by what I said. I concluded to say that a more ballanced approach is that all sin leads to suffering in the long run. Big picture OK?

thenack: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA "AIDS is a direct result of sin," is it? who decided that? how can that be proven? i suppose we also shouldn't eat shellfish or clip our beards below our ears, or plant more than one kind of seed in the same field, or wear clothes woven of two different fabrics (cotton/polyester, anyone?), because those commands are all on the same page as "do not lie with another man as you lie with a woman. that is detestible." in Leviticus 18. i hate when people blindly practice intolerance because an old book says that what someone's doing is "detestible by God." maybe God's the detestible one for creating people who he finds detestible on grounds of their sexual preference, which they did NOT choose... or for having stricken the world with aids, regardless of the reason. i suppose the holocaust was God's way of punishing the Jews for not believing that Jesus was the Messiah? and the tsunami catastrophies were to punish eastern peoples for not accepting Christianity? morality is not set by God, by the way. morality, if you think about it, would exist whether God ever did or not. and homosexuality does NOT fall under "immoral." the ten commandments cover morality, with a couple of "only listen to and worship ME ME ME" rules thrown in. jerry falwell says AIDS is God's punishment for homosexuality (based on what?) and millions of falwell Christians line up like sheep to take on his view. the same man who said that fucking "teletubbies" was an immoral show because tinky winky was supposedly gay, and when interviewed, admitted that he had never even SEEN the show. and so what if tinky winky WAS gay? kids automatically become gay from watching a tv show? i've seen will & grace several times and guess what? i'm still straight. and so what if watching something did make you gay? what's so bad about that? i fucking hate the 'righteous and the wicked' view held by many Christians across america. it's high school clique shit. and don't even get me started about the blind Christian hatred/intolerance for Muslims... but that's another can-o-worms. btw, the single all-caps words should have been italicized, but i don't know how. -rc

@thenack: "NO ONE WOULD EVER GET AIDS IF EVERYONE ADHERED TO GODS WORD ON THE ISSUE OF SEX. Sin will hurt either you or someone else, always! So even if God did not intervene supernaturally on this one, AIDS is a direct result of sin."

Sinning = AIDS? Wow, I never saw it that way before, but now that you mention it, I guess you're right! I'd better stop masturbating so I don't get AIDS!

"Then again, I only know what I read here now about him so...."

    Admitting your ignorance, well done.

"what I do no is he got on a lot of your nerves which I find quite amusing. If you only believe in love and not in God why do you even care what he says. (at least Boonsketty is not such a hipocrite, sounds to me that Boonskretty and Jerry Falwell has a lot in common, don't you think?)"

Nah, why would I be pissed at Falwell. Wouldn't change anything. My last post was me laughing at him. Right now, for example, I'm laughing at your spelling.
  • D6fer said on May 17, 2007....
SW...if you remember the bible...then you will know that in the final days, many plagues will be on the earth.
  • thenack said on May 18, 2007....

Radio and Boon, read what I said. You oversimplify my statements and leave half of what I said out of your responses to make me look like a idiot. What really is happening is that you are conveniently relying on half of the truth to make yourself look like the smarty pants. This is either happening out of ignorance or very bad logic.(ignorance can be fixed but bad logic will be with you forever). If I argue with Silver, he understands the points I'm trying to make logically, even if he disagrees. Boonboy, feel free to laugh at my spelling, I cringe at the type of logic you used to come to your masturbation causes AIDS conclusion of what I said. At least I have the excuse that English is my second language, what’s yours? Oh and then there is spellcheck that I can use, what are you gonna do?

Now read my posts again slowly....ok now.... I said I did not think God put AIDS on earth specifically to punish gays. I also said that if every man only had sex with his wife, AIDS would never have spread. Now how on earth would you argue with that? Lets go one further for arguments sake. If gays got married and only had sex within wedlock, AIDS would not have spread. If you know anything about math you would have to agree that if 30years ago, only half the people that had sex with anyone but their spouses, did not (half the unmarried sex) AIDS numbers today would probably be in the order of 10-20 % of what it is now.

So what can we conclude....if you adhere to Gods moral code. The chances of getting AIDS are very very slim. If you are at the other extreme (which may include gays etc. or not) your chances are very high. Medically speaking gays have a higher risk because of plain biology and the general nature of their relationships.

Perhaps I should make my point even simpler for you two? If you play with fire, you may very well get burnt.

  • radioclash said on May 18, 2007....
actually, nack, i wasn't really attacking you so much as attacking so-called-Christian intolerance. i'm sorry i seemed to go off at you. note that i did not attack your spelling :-), and i'm impressed by your grasp of the english language for it to be your second, i wouldn't have known. i did disagree with what you said, partially because i don't think God has anything to do with AIDS, or that He exists, for that matter. if He does, He'll appreciate me capitalizing His pronouns, i suppose. but aside from that, your point about AIDS not spreading if people wouldn't go out and have sex with everyone is true. i just disagree with your premise for believing it, since morality isn't up to God. even if He exists, i don't believe AIDS is punishment for any sort of sin. God said the next time he would destroy the world with fire, not disease. fiery asses from gay sex do not count. sorry if that sounded insensitive, but i thought it was really funny and had to leave it. -rc

Radioclash, thanks I appreciate it. No hard feelings and I'm sorry in turn for giving you the same answer as Boon which you certainly did not deserve. I must say I think we actually agree on this quite well, and I must commend you on your knowlege of the Bible, even if you don't think God exists. I think this shows some character, for lack of a better word.

Anyway, gotta get some work done.

    Keep well

@nack: "Radio and Boon, read what I said. You oversimplify my statements and leave half of what I said out of your responses to make me look like a idiot."

Hahahahahahaha! You give me too much credit. I just reposted exactly what you said.

"What really is happening is that you are conveniently relying on half of the truth to make yourself look like the smarty pants. This is either happening out of ignorance or very bad logic.(ignorance can be fixed but bad logic will be with you forever)"

Bad logic's a form of ignorance. Don't know what you're trying to say there. Remember, little nuggets of advice are most effective when they actually make sense.

    "
I cringe at the type of logic you used to come to your masturbation causes AIDS conclusion of what I said."

        from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarcasm:
"Sarcasm from Greek σαρκασμός (sarkasmos), 'mockery, sarcasm' is sneering, jesting, or mocking at a person, situation or thing. It is strongly associated with irony, with some definitions classifying it as a type of verbal irony intended to insult or wound[1] — stating the opposite of the intended meaning, e.g. using "that's fantastic" to mean "that's awful". It is used mostly in a humorous manner, and is expressed through vocal intonations such as over-emphasizing the actual statement or particular words."

"At least I have the excuse that English is my second language, what’s yours?"

        I don't need an excuse.

"Oh and then there is spellcheck that I can use, what are you gonna do?"

Tell you to use your "spell check".

        Here's the kicker!

You posted: "NO ONE WOULD EVER GET AIDS IF EVERYONE ADHERED TO GODS WORD ON THE ISSUE OF SEX. Sin will hurt either you or someone else, always! So even if God did not intervene supernaturally on this one, AIDS is a direct result of sin."

    AND THEN

"So what can we conclude....if you adhere to Gods moral code. The chances of getting AIDS are very very slim."

Look at those two statements carefully, thenack. I suggest you figure out your own deluded belief system before trying to preach it to me.

That's my last post here. Good luck holding the gates silverwhipser.
  • thenack said on May 21, 2007....
Boon, HAHAHAHAHAHAHA pretty much sums up your look on life, rigth. Sarcasm is the lowest form of reasoning. You did't prove anything with your sarcasm either, maybe just that you disagreed without giving a reason. Talk about the emperors clother, HAHAHAHAHHAHA

My last statements are not contradictory, God does not give people AIDS, people give people AIDS. Through immoral behaviour. This has nothing to do with the original post, I disagree with what Jerry Falwell said, but aded what I believe a good Christian opinion on the matter should be. I'm not preaching to you, I'm saying you are arrogant and narrow minded, why don't you come to africa and have sex with lots of girls (or guys), it'll be easy and fun. Then let me know how you are in 3 years time,

Did you get the point yet?, even if there is no god at all, following the rules in the bible will narow your chances of getting aids tremendiously, and from maths I get that if more people did this, AIDS would eventually become very rare. But I must say up untill now anything more than two lines long had you stumped
