Well, it's the mayoral primaries here in Philly, let the circus begin.
The Democratic side of the primary election is really all that matters
here in Philly, considering there are many candidates on this side. The
race for the Democratic nomination has drawn a motley cast of crazies, almost like the characters in the board game Clue:
a union thug, a crooked CEO, a Representative with a poor attendance
record, a homeless man named Jesus (not the Spanish pronunciation,
either), this lunatic whose platform revolves around vague, amorphous
concepts such as peace and love, a guy who reminds my brother of a Muppet, and that guy who's got like 2% in the polls. I'm voting for the
Muppet.
Doesn't this campaign ad remind you of Taxi Driver?
Yeah, that should set the tone for this election. This is only the second election in which I've participated, and it's already shaped itself up to be the craziest one I'll ever witness.
I've very interested in local politics, so I took stock in everything I learned from each candidate. Michael Nutter, the guy I'm voting for, is my favorite candidate almost solely on the basis that he disagrees on a lot of issues that our current (holds back laughter) "mayor" has upheld. But also, he's run a clean campaign devoid of muckraking and mudslinging, and has faith that he can salvage the ailing public school system with more realistic methods. I doubt that us Philadelphians will see noticeable signs of new life being pumped into this city within the next few years, but I'm sure Mike Nutter will get the ball rolling. He's ahead in the polls for a reason, and I'm sure he can rope in a good chunk of the 21% undecided vote here. We'll just have to wait and see.
