a number of our fellow soulcasters have already beaten me to the punch on this, but i add my voice to theirs.

to all mothers and mothers to be, i wish you a happy mothers day!

we all know that there's no way to thank our mothers enough for the gift of bringing us into this world, that no presents, no greeting cards could ever capture the full depths of our feelings for them. sure, we should tell them these things all year round. and yet i still find it a good thing that we have a day set aside expressly for this purpose.

shortly, the mrs and i will need to start our day, go to church and celebrate mothers day with her family at brunch. it'll be good to see them--it's been a few weeks. after brunch, we'll head over to my parents' place, where my sister will already be working on making dinner. we need to stop at the store to find some ripe avocados for the orange/avocado salad we'll be having for the first course (it's a recipe in the williams-sonoma salad cookbook).

so how will you pass the day?

thanks for the greeting... well its sunday night here in the philippines... we just finished celebrating mothers day... we had bountiful lunch and we just stayed home and laugh almost the whole day while sharing crazy stories... It was a good day for all of us... we were all in a good mood!

    Thanks, Ed!

We will be heading over to my Parent's house for a little cook-out.  My Husband will be making his famous steak for all the meat eaters (not me) and I will be having some chicken that my Mom always makes special for me :-).  I'm going to make an antipasto salad.  My Sisters and Niece will be there.  My Niece is heading to her Grandfather's so we won't see her for long, but I'll be glad to hear how she's been doing.

Little Daily said "Happy Mother's Day" to me this morning and I say "Thank you, sweetie.  Without you, it wouldn't be Mother's Day!"  Mr. Daily said "I just saw a greeting card in the store that said that!"  LOL!

Enjoy your day with your family!

Thanks ed...actually I'm doing my best to ignore it and thankfully my sons oblige me. I'll be heading off to do some work in a while. I could have gone in yesterday but purposely saved it for today. I've even been known to go out of town for the weekend to avoid Mothers' Day.

Why you might ask? Since my Mom died, this day started being a difficult one for me. I mourn her loss...I remember how when I was young I didn't think she was a very good Mom. She wasn't like the other Moms who stayed home to look after their family. She worked. She didn't have to - my Dad made more than enough money. She wanted to. She always took school holidays off but I still remember coming home to an empty house, having to start dinner, not being able to have my friends over because there was no parent home. I loved her but didn't think she was a very good Mom.

Then when I had my sons my whole attitude changed. I realized that she was really ahead of her time. She was trying to balance her love for her family with her own personal needs. She needed to work for her...not the money. As a Mom I finally appreciated the value of her lesson. So Mothers' Day to me is a day to remember MY Mom.

As for my sons...I don't need a special day for them to show they love me. I feel it  every day. Don't get me wrong...I've got nothing against other people celebrating Mothers' Day...just this works for us. My sons will be spending time with their mother-in-law and their wife (a Mom and soon to be x2 Mom).

I'm gonna head over to my parents house later and take my mom to lunch. I think my brother is planning to be there too, so it'll be nice. And I know she's gonna like the gift I got her. I hope, anyway!

Thanks, Ed! My son text-messaged me first thing this morning before I was even out of bed. He'll be coming over later and we'll be going out to dinner. I don't cook on Mother's Day, so if they want food, we either eat out or B cooks.

SS, I am hugging you hard. I know you miss your mom. I think you're a very strong woman and a wonderful mother. :rose:

Thank you Ed!  My children are apparently going to make me dinner. My husband is coming over to supervise and drop off the rose bushes his mother bought me for mothers day. Then my children and I are going to visit my mother and grandmother to drop off their gifts and goodies. My grandma will be thrilled... she doesn't know we are coming yet! Last week we had a mother/daughter banquet at my grandmothers church. It is an annual event that I haven't missed since I was five. My grandma thinks that was her mothers day treat...so she will be surprised!

My kids were so sweet, they did a treasure hunt for me. The prizes were cute little cards saying "I love you Mom" or "Mom is cool". It was much fun. Now I am getting ready to go to work this afternoon.

    Silver--Thanks for the Mother's Day wishes. Enjoy the day with your families.  {{hugs}}

The husband and little guy let me sleep for quite some time this morning. Then they woke up--well the little guy did--with cards and gifts.

Later, we are going out to a late lunch/early dinner so I don't have to cook. I tried to convince the hubby to cook today; however, they little guy voted to go out instead, and, somehow, that vote won. [chuckles]

Well, being a single guy leaves me more time for family. I have family over from South Africa, namely my sister and her family. I haven't seen them for seven years. I think their timing has been awesome. It's been a great pleasure for us to call our Mom in Africa and wish her happy mothers day.
It's really wonderful to be able to share memories and to be able to appreciate their company. I think I am the one who has been blessed here.
Mothers are very special and the older they get, the more time you wish you had with them. I guess we like to brag about our Mom's, but I really feel that my Mom has made a change in many peoples lives. Please take a look here to see what I mean... www.shepherdskeep.org.za
I think the biggest change she made has been in my life. Although I didn't realise it as a teen, her teachings have had a profound affect on myself.
It may sound very soppy for a 37 year old man to be harping on about his mother, but I really don't care because I'm proud of who she is and what she made out of me.
So to all the great Moms out there, HAPPY MOTHERS DAY !!!

    Thank you Ed!
I spent it with my youngest son, ex-husband, and ex-mother-in-law.  The ex took us to Bonefish Grill to eat.  Fabulous!

Not a Mom myself but my sister is the mother of two beautiful kids - one boy, one girl - and of course there is our Mom.  I called my Mom over in Colorado to wish her a Happy Mother's Day - she was working lol.  I'll be calling my sister this afternoon.  They should be getting their gifts and cards on Monday.  Happy Mother's Day to all the Moms!
  • rightwingwizard said on May 13, 2007....
Mother's day has lost most of its meaning for me these days.  Several years ago I lost me mother in law (we weren't tight but I respected  and loved her if for no other reason than that she was the woman who brought my wife into this world)  Then a few years later I lost my wife and while I may have been at one time or another been called a 'mother' or some other mother related epitaph I had never expected that I would be required to fulfil the role of mother in my children's lives.  Now my own mother has passed.   Oh, to be sure I will call each of my daughters in law and wish them a happy mothers day , but this is just not the same.

Happy Mothers Day to all the moms out there.

I will spend the day thinking about the most precious mothers who have touched my life.

Is mothers day different in different countries?
I'm asking this because i'm from the UK and we have already had mothering sunday ages ago.
  • flytimes said on May 13, 2007....
Sounds like mothers day is going to be fun for you all.., i am like you rightwingwizard, mothers day has a totally different meaning to me., My mother went a.w.o.l when i was 18 months old so i used to feel very bitter and upset around mothers day, and when i hear the words mothers day now i think of my kids mum more, instead of my "real"mum, i should really be referring to her as "the woman who gave birth to me".anyway, happy mothers dayyy allll

Thanks Ed for the post, its nice to read everyone's comments.  I started my garden today.  My daughter spent the night at a friends house,  when she came home, her friend hung out here for a little while.  Then we just kind of hung out and had dinner.  And of course I called my mom.  It was a really nice day, nothing special per se, but nice.
