A quick rundown of the results of the Division Playoffs:
Tennessee 24
Cleveland 38
This one started out looking like it would be a shootout, and though the score did end up quite high, most of it came in the first and last quarters. Cleveland took the ball first and drove down to score. Tennessee forced the Browns to a third down inside the ten, but a swing pass to Reggie Bush dashed the Titans hopes of forcing a field goal. Tennessee came out flat on its first drive, and was forced to punt, but they caught a break when Bush fumbled the punt and it was returned for a TD. Cleveland responded quickly with two passes to TE Vernon Davis, the second of which went for 50 yards and a TD. It remained at that score through the second quarter. The teams traded field goals in the third, but then things opened up in the fourth.
The Browns drove down and HB Austin Barrie punched it in from one yard out to make the lead 14. Tennessee responded with a quick scoring drive, which was greatly helped by the return of TE Jason Witten, who left in the first quarter with elbow bursitis. The Browns got the ball back, and on the second play from scrimmage, Carson Palmer hit Vernon Davis again on a play action pass, which Davis took 70 yards to the house. CB Brandon Lane picked off Titan QB Martin Thomas' pass on the next drive to set up another Reggie Bush touchdown, putting the game out of reach. The Titans added a garbage-time TD to make the score respectable. Cleveland returns to the Conference Championship for the first time since their Super Bowl win in 2008.
Tampa Bay 23
Los Angeles 33
This game was never really in doubt. Los Angeles' defense dominated the Bucs O for most of the game. LA got off to a 6-0 lead on a couple of long field goals. The Bucs took their only lead of the game when they returned a fumble by Bandit HB T.J. Mathews 75 yards for a score. LA answered back with a pair of Vince Young TD passes and a chip shot field goal before half to make it 23-7 at the break. The field goal should never have been kicked, and had it not, the game might have gone differently. The Bandits had a third down in the Bucs red zone with less than 20 seconds left in the half, and had no timeouts. They attempted to pass for a score, but Larry Fitzgerald caught the pass short of the goal line and was tackled in play, keeping the clock moving. However, Tampa Bay called a timeout with 7 seconds, allowing the Bandits to kick the field goal. At half, the Bandits had absolutely shut down Buc QB Drew Brees, forcing three interceptions and sacking him multiple times. Brees wasn't helped by multiple drops by his receivers, and his QB rating at half was 0.
The third quarter went by rather uneventfully. Bandits K Neil Rackers just missed a 55 yarder into the wind, and Tampa added a FG of their own. Early in the fourth, LA scored on Vince's third TD toss of the game to take a commanding 30-10 lead. Tampa would score on Brees' first TD pass of the game with 3:49 left to play. LA recovered an on-side kick and went on to kick another field goal, bumping their lead up to 16. Brees led the Bucs back down the field and scored with 54 seconds to play, but TE McGriff dropped the easy two point conversion pass. Tampa tried an on-side kick anyway, but failed to recover. Los Angeles will be playing in its first Conference Championship game since the redraft.
Baltimore 27
Miami 34
The Dolphins pull of a tight win in a back-and-forth thriller. Michael Vick leads Miami to an early 14-0 lead, but Peyton Manning and the Ravens reply with 10 points in the second to make the halftime score 14-10. Each team added a TD in the third, and started off the fourth with a field goal each, making the score 24-20. Manning drove his Ravens down the field 68 yards in 6 plays and capped the drive with a 3 yard TD pass, giving the Ravens their first lead. Miami came back and added a field goal with only 1:14 left in the game, tying it at 27. Miami got the ball back with 20 seconds to play and Vick found his TE Alex Smith on a 65 yard pass for a touchdown with only 3 seconds to play. Despite the close score, the yardage was heavily in favor of Miami, mostly due to 210 yards on the ground, 132 of which were from Vick's legs. The 'Phins are headed to the Conference Championship for the third time in the five years since the redraft.
Chicago 12
New York Giants 34
The G-men ran away with this one. Chicago struck first with a field goal, the only points in the first quarter, but the Giants scored 14 unanswered and led 14-6 at half. They just built on their lead in the second half, their defense holding the Bears to a meager 154 yards offense on the game. Both teams had three turnovers in the game. The standout performances were by Giant HB Larry Johnson (30 carries for 125 yds and 2 total TDs) and WR Leo Williamson (9 catches for 139 yds), a second year, second round pick out of New Mexico State. The Giants are heading to the NFC Championship for the third straight season and are looking to defend their Super Bowl title.
