one of the real challenges i have is describing a character’s mood through his or her body language. i’m not consciously aware of body language myself, because i’m usually too focused on a person’s voice and inflections in it.

so i’m creating a writing exercise that i know i could use for myself, and perhaps that others might find useful too: write a scene in which there are at least two people. focus on one person whose responses are not revealed through dialogue but rather through their body language.

i will post my submission on friday.

please bear in mind the following (previously posted here):

1. post constructive, specific criticisms. a response of “i don’t like it” doesn’t say anything helpful. a response of “when you wrote [x], i felt this didn’t work b/c [reason: e.g., doesn’t sound like the character, contradicts something you wrote earlier].”

2. understand that criticisms you may receive are posted in good faith. we all have weak points in our writing. i’m not good sometimes at setting the scene, i tend to gloss over the locations b/c i’m more concerned w/ dialogue and characters. comments that help me shore up that weakness are things i really would appreciate.

Ed. i knew you were conscious on voice and I always think I hear yours even though I can't describe it rightly. Must say it sounds nice and American. Too bad this exercise is too difficult for me I am sure.

skald, i wouldn't at all be sure of that. give it some time and perhaps you'll think of a way to try it? :>

as to my voice...jeez, i don't even know how to describe my voice, to be honest. i might need a few friends to help me out here.

Maybe you should do another on the nature on and post the new exercises there as a response so we get an email response rather than hoping we catch it on the page.  Also I'll be in on this round.

sean, i see that you responded already--post a link to that as a comment here.

me personally, i prefer that everyone posts it on their own blog entries--for those using google adsense, they aren't robbed of clicks/views for participating, nor do i profit from it.
