This made my skin crawl.

A boy in Oregon had two spiders, one of them still alive, removed from his ear by doctors.  The boy had been experiencing popping sounds in his ear, then developed an earache.

Full story here.

I can't even think about this too closely.  It is just too disgusting and creepy.

I would be experiencing a hell of a lot more than an earache. Try a nervous breakdown. :D
  • AlisonMarie19 said on May 08, 2007....
OMG. I would DIE. There's nothing more unsavory than a spider. Except maybe a cockroach.

I've got spiders in my ears
    Spiders in my ears
And all your words seem to crawl.

I just thought of something terrible. ugh what if it had already laid eggs? OMG... [shudders violently]
  • lioneljay said on May 08, 2007....
Well, Mimi, then the kid could hear the eggs hatching - a totally new and different experience. ;)

    I saw this earlier.  *shudder*

My mom's a medical transcriptionist, and many years ago, she typed up a note in which a patient had gone to the doctor because her ear felt stuffy and it turns out there was a cockroach in there.

I saw the link on my internet provider's home page and got SO freaking creeped out, I couldn't even click it.  If I did, I'd be taking Little D to the doctors every single day!

    GROSS!  GAG!

This exact thing happened to my grandmother in the early 50s. They had to drive 50 some miles to the nearest doctor to have it removed.
Reminds me of.....'.....it wiggled and jiggled and tickled in side her....I dont know why she swallowed the fly....'
  • MissMimi said on May 08, 2007....
Botty! SHHH! You are making me feel all crawly.

I saw this on the news last night. EWWWW.

I've heard of it happening with a roach as well. GROSS.

Actually, I think they even did a bit on ER one season when Noah Wylie was still on the show and a ER patient had a roach in his (maybe her) ear.

This is the very reason I am so fanatical about keeping my ears clean.  As a child I heard stories about such instances and have always cleaned my ears several times a day.  A doctor told me once that I actually kept them too clean, there is supposed to be a light film of ear wax coating the ear canal, not in my ears.  One upside to my fanaticism is that I have never had an ear infection in my life.

Often after having a hearing test I will be called back for a retest.  Not because they are concerned about hearing loss, because I hear frequencies I shouldn't be hearing.  So they retest with the same result, shrug their shoulders and walk away.  I don't know if this has anything to do with my ear hygiene compulsion, but it sure hasn't hurt.

I do remember my mom, one time when I was very young, cleaning my eras and telling me "Oh my!  You've got a whole garden growing in there!"  She only had to say that one time.

I put a bug in my ear once. It hurt. Bad.

    Fortunately, it crawled back out.

    The end.

    (It wasn't a spider...)
  • MissMimi said on May 08, 2007....
    Yeah, cookie, it's just weird.

Tin, I may regeret asking, but what was your motivation in doing such a thing? My son once stuck a Matchbox car wheel in his ear, but no bugs thank God.
  • TinSoldier said on May 08, 2007....
I was a kid and the bug was cool. That's about it, really.

    I never did it again...
  • mom said on May 08, 2007....

Tin- LOLOLOLOL, that is so funny.

I have heard the story about the cockroach in the ear.

  • MissMimi said on May 08, 2007....
Ah, the old "because it was there" excuse. :D
  • mom said on May 08, 2007....

LOLOLOL, Mimi, always worked for me

  • MissMimi said on May 08, 2007....
I was never brave enough as a kid to do stuff like that. I am a certified sissy when it comes to the insect world.

Once when we were outside on a windy day, a beetle flew in my sister's ear. She screamed and jumped around like crazy. It was pretty funny.
[getting ready for bad puns about bee(a)tles from LJ]

I once had earwigs in my mouth, and they had pinched the inside of my mouth so it was hard getting them out.  It was so nasty, but nothing in my ears.
  • rmuxagirl said on May 09, 2007....
I can honestly say I have never stuck anything in my ear ever.

My question is how did the kid not know there were two spiders in his ear?  Like how in the world did they get there?
  • brokenandused said on May 09, 2007....
this is so gross! i saw a show once were there were spiders living in this ladies skull! they actually showed one crawling out! i had to turn it off, that's just too disgusting for me!
  • MissMimi said on May 09, 2007....
muxie, I wondered the same thing, but you know little boys. Ear hygiene is low on the list of priorities. I'm not even going to speculate about how they got there. It gives me a huge case of the willies.

b&u, I do not watch any kind of show where bugs are involved. When my kids rented that movie, Arachnophobia, I hid in the kitchen.
  • pessimisticvaunt said on May 09, 2007....
MM ... I am with you on the Arachnophobia...the only good spider is a dead spider

    MOm... What is an  earwig
  • mom said on May 09, 2007....
Pyez- an earwig is a long bug with pincers on the tail,  they are nasty
  • TinSoldier said on May 09, 2007....
    Earwig picture.
  • Zayda said on May 09, 2007....
They said on the news report that he could hear funny "clicking and tapping" noises in his ear. It was the spiders walking on his eardrum apparently. They didn't know it was spiders in his ear until the doctors pulled them out.
  • MissMimi said on May 09, 2007....
Renewed case of the heebeejeebies. Ewwwww.
  • AlisonMarie19 said on May 10, 2007....
Mom- how did you get earwigs in your mouth? I would have FREAKED OUT. I don't like things with 6 or more legs. Ants are ok, some others are ok, but the crunchy kinds of bugs (earwigs, beetles, etc) and anything with over 8 legs completely freak me out. Especially when they launch a sneak attack. I had a spider drop on my hand once, and I nearly had a heart attack. There was a centipede on the ceiling of a hotel room, and I thought I would die. We had to sleep with the lights on. I read stuff like this and get all crawly feeling. (shivers)
    Acky... Ishy poo... blech...

Ali- when I was a chld I was playing in the backyard.  We had hollow reeds back there.  I picked one up and sucked on it.  Boy did I scream and cry like a baby.
  • AlisonMarie19 said on May 10, 2007....
Oh GAWD. How traumatic! I would have just died. I got sick once from eating clover in the yard... Not the same, but isn't it funny what kids'll put in their mouth?

  • mom said on May 10, 2007....
yeah but funny isn't  a word I would have used :/
  • AlisonMarie19 said on May 10, 2007....
Not funny "haha", but funny "strange?" That's what I meant. My brother was chewing on a cherry pit once, in the middle of winter, and upon questioning him, my mom deduced that he had picked it out of some bird shit on the back wall. Ew?!
