Can you recall your childhood with your Mum? What was she like?

As you reflect on Mother's Day, past and upcoming, what and how much can you remember?

Here's a humorous way in which someone remembered his Mum best:

[     " The most remarkable thing about my mother is that for thirty years she served the family nothing but leftovers. The original meal has never been found. "

my mother is the craziest person i have ever met...

and i love her just the way she is!!!

My mom always had a lot of style. She still does. She can make jeans and a black turtleneck look elegant. But, at best, she is an unenthusiastic cook. At worst, she is an awful cook. She used to make pork chops that she breaded in cornflake crumbs and baked. Once, she was out of regular cornflake crumbs, so she crushed up some Kellogg's frosted flakes, and used them. She didn't think it would make a difference in the taste. No wonder she never ate meat.

My mom's a strong woman. She raised seven children pretty much by herself and never once murdered anybody. ;)

Queen: yep, 'crazy' mums definitely rock, don't they?

BTW, what makes her so 'crazy'?
  • Bronx said on May 05, 2007....
MissMimi: well....you know that elegance and kitchen sweat don't quite mix very well, they say.

She really tried raising you all - cooking or preparing what you don't like to eat can be a very testing chore.

Heehee...perhaps, she may have been trying to discourage you kids from eating meat, too!

mimi- I love your last sentence- sometimes I think they are saints.

bronx- I mostly remember two things. First, how she put up with my step-father, and second her wonderful cooking- she was a master.
  • queenparanoia said on May 05, 2007....
let's just say i'm more mature than her. she acts like a teen ager sometimes. drives me crazy!!!
  • sweet_cookie01 said on May 05, 2007....
there are so many things... but mainly... its on how she independently raised me and my sisters... she has loved with all of her heart but stoods up alone and strong.
  • silverwhisper said on May 06, 2007....
i remember her gentle wisdom and prohibitively expensive taste that make her such a nightmare to shop for. i remember her smile and beautiful singing voice comforting me as a baby. i remember her sense of humor.

i remember a great deal more but i'll stop here least i turn maudlin. :>

beyond: It's just such a great pity about your step-father, but lucky you!

No guessing that she didn't have to do the dishes much after you'd eaten! Haha.
  • Bronx said on May 06, 2007....
Queen: I understand - it can be annoying when the child has to advise the parent about behavior!
  • Bronx said on May 06, 2007....
sweet: she's definitely a model parent, IMHO.
  • Bronx said on May 06, 2007....
    SW: Haha.

Fire away! Sounds like you had a really wonderful childhood.

That's very special - yes, it's often hard to know what to get her without imitating Dad, isn't it?.
  • botoni said on May 06, 2007....
Practical wasnt necessarily something mother understood. One of my fondest memories of her is seeing her drive school bus in a full length fur coat, daintily scented with roses and sporting 4" stillettos! Off she d go in the worst of winter storms never had a pair of boots with her once!
  • Bronx said on May 06, 2007....
botoni: wow, driving in stiletto shoes - I am very sure that her dedication to her work gave her all the warmth she needed!

    At least she was happy.

LOl Bronx, I like that joke.

When I saw this post, the first thing that came to my mind was my mom carrying me in her back as we were crossing the river near our house. I was about 6 then, and I really felt safe in her back, even if I was scared she'd slip as she stepped on the rocks. Luckily, she didn't.

My mom was always cleaning and cooking.  I seem to remember that it seemed like it consumed her.  I do remember her reading books to us in the evening though, and I do the same for my kids, even now.
  • Bronx said on May 07, 2007....
    Lioness: hi.

    That's quite a memory you've got there!

Being 'back-prisoned' - haha, that's what I call it - is definitely the best way to be carried across a river with rapids - that way, she would be able to swim carrying you safely if she slipped.
  • Bronx said on May 07, 2007....
U-I: that's really great - it's just so amazing how busy mothers can be, isn't it?

  • Baby_Blue said on May 08, 2007....
I remember the fact my mother was always a very strong person that put up w/a lot for us kids! Ill never forget the time she went off on a friend of mines mom because a fancy shirt of mine dissapeared at her house! LOL
  • Bronx said on May 10, 2007....
BB: yep, she'd definitely storm that house for a missing dress shirt - great defenders, aren't they?

My Grandma would personally return any damaged goods to any store/shop that dared to sell such items to me - they'd always quickly make a full refund and apologize!

  • Baby_Blue said on May 10, 2007....
Oh god yah lol... No one could ever pull a fast one over on my mom!! Brother, maybe but outside of that.. Good luck trying.. she is still that way till today!

My fondest memories of my Mother were of her walking my brother, sister, and I to church on Wednesday evenings.  She taught me about Jesus, the foundation of my life.
  • Bronx said on May 12, 2007....
BB: the best way to be, definitely.

My mother was the greatest cook. I have so many fond memories like coming home from school and finding the best home made home ground whole wheat bread coming out of the oven with a good pot of pinto beans and chili on the stove. With a nice fresh batch of peanut butter and honey for desert. mmmm boy it was great and then what lovely meals with all the fixings, home grown turkeys, beef, etc. for sunday and holiday dinners. Boy could she make the best pies and german-chocolate cakes. Boy was I spoiled. And then my wife had a lot of learning to do because she grew up in a smaller family. But boy she has become as good a cook as my mom through lots of hard work. My email: mormonblog@gmail.com Boy did my mother make me feel like I could do no wrong.

I agree that mothers should be treated special all year long not just to make them feel special for just a day. Although when that day does come each year that honors all the moms out there. We all should treat them just a little extra special. Remember if it weren’t for them and all their love and hard work we wouldn’t even be here today. There are people in the world who, because they feel their lives are so busy and important, that actually forget not only their own mom but also the mother of their own children. So here’s to all the MOMs out there who have made many sacrificies for the well being of their children…..
    Read on…
    Somebody’s Mother
The woman was old and ragged and gray
And bent with the chill of the Winter’s day.
The street was wet with a recent snow
And the woman’s feet were aged and slow.
She stood at the crossing and waited long,
Alone, uncared for, amid the throng
Of human beings who passed her by
Nor heeded the glance of her anxious eye.
Down the street with laughter and shout,
Glad in the freedom of ’school let out,”
Came the boys like a flock of sheep,
Hailing the snow piled white and deep.
Past the woman so old and gray
Hastened the children on their way.
Nor offered a helping hand to her-
So meek, so tired, afraid to stir
Lest the carriage wheels or the horses’ feet
Should crowd her down in the slippery street.
At last came one of the merry troop,
    The gayest laddie of all the group;
He paused beside her and whispered low,
‘I’ll help you cross, if you wish to go.”
Her aged hand on his strong young arm
She placed, and so, without hurt or harm,
He guided the trembling feet along,
Proud that his own were firm and strong.
Then back again to his friends he went,
His young heart happy and well content.
‘She’s somebody’s mother, boys, you know,
For all she’s aged and poor and slow,
‘And I hope some fellow will lend a hand
To help my mother, you understand,
‘If ever she’s poor and old and gray,
When her own dear boy is far away.’
And “somebody’s mother” bowed low her head
In her home that night, and the prayer she said
Was, ‘God be kind to the noble boy,
Who is somebody’s son, and pride and joy!”
    …Mary Dow Brine
