In true Seinfeld form a guy brought a bag of pennies totaling $2.65cents to a chinese restaurant. The woman who ran the restaurant REFUSED to take the pennies when it came time to pay. He walked away mad and i guess he reported it to a politician. He is an EMT Tech but was out of uniform at that particular time. After the incident garnered a write up in the local paper the lady gladly excepted his money with a smile and claimed it was a "misunderstanding" and how "Sorry" she was. As the man explained  to the paper and politicians(who are thinking of a law to fine shop owners who refuse correct payment b/c it comes in the form of pennies), "This is a Poor neighborhood and they have a bussiness here. They should take any form of currency whether it be pennies or a $100 dollar Bill because everyone deserves to eat. No one should go hungry."

So here is my Question. Would you take the pennies? Why are people so appossed to them? Isn't money Money?

Pennies are not considered real money. I think that technically, no has to accept pennies as currency. I will have to research and verify that, but I'm pretty sure that this is how it works.

In fact, they are trying to remove the penny from the US currency. But that's another fact I have to verify. Be Back Later.

HH.. I take them everyday.. also pick them up everytime I see them  on the ground....espescially now cause you have that question to answer given todays copper prices at the junk yard. what is worth more a pound of pennies or how much a  pound of pennies would total

HH- The govt. would like to remove the penny from currency because it costs over two cents to make one penny. I don't know the legalities, but where I live they are at the opposite end, meaning there are signs at the counter that say they refuse to accept anything over a twenty dollar bill. Is this legal?

Personally, I blame the EMT tech for the problem. First, he was not starving like a homeless person might be, and second, who wants to stand behind someone else to pay and wait for them to count out two hundred and sixty five pennies? This man was not thinking about other people before he went to eat. The people I know wrap large amounts of change and dispose of it properly.

I would never pay for anything with fistfulls of pennies, unless I actually was homeless or starving. And where I live, you can starve with a hundred dollar bill.

Geez - go to a coinstar machine and get cash for all that loose change. Then go get chinese food or whatever else.

I took this jar of coins that I had been filling for almost three years and even with the fee I took home $173.00.

But I'll be rolling up the quarters I've been saving myself.

I know money is money, but it's really inconvenient and frankly quite rude to expect someone in a busy restaurant to count out all those pennies right then and there.

Maybe she should count every soup cracker or grain of rice while he waits and see how he feels about it.

I would have taken the pennys..$2.65cents is not that much to count but in buisness, times money and counting pennys can be a time consuming process, i should know, im always counting mine! but where do you draw the line!? What if someone wanted to pay you with, say $8.65 cents.. Its a tough one!

My girls find money on the ground daily and it all adds up, we take it to the bank to exchange and it's surprising what they have got for free.

I take change to pay for things, not all pennies but when you are just scraping by and really need diapers for the baby, $10 is $10 whether it is in change or a $10 bill. I think it really depends on the situation, my ex was refused to accept change for his bottle of beer and I think that is understandable. A restaurant is definitely a different situation, going out to eat is not a necessity and they can refuse service to anyone they please for whatever reason they please.

paying in pennies is rude as hell. anyone arguing differently has never considered being on the receiving end of that much copper. it takes up a hellacious amount of space, is heavy, has to be counted (esp if in a coin roll) and frankly, the customer is being a self-righteous schmuck, IMHO.

I believe here we have a law that states up to 50 cents in rolled pennies is acceptable as partial payment....the vendor can refuse more than that. In some businessess pennies are a difficult coin to keep.....they always run short so they are often welcomed. Its good PR to accept them but that amount is sure pushing it as far as I m concerned.

When I was in college, my friends and I would chip in change to buy and share a pack of cigarettes...
