I dropped my oldest daughter at the hair salon an hour ago.

My words to the stylist were few:  Can you fix this?

In January she dyed her hair a dark red color.  She's naturally a darker shade of blonde.

I hate it, but she loves it.

I had only one request.  That before her senior yearbook pictures in early june, that she go back to her natural color.  She agreed.

So last night she attempted to bleach out the red.

At 10pm she comes downstairs in tears.

Her hair is literally ORANGE.  And underneath the orange is the palest of pale blondes.

It looked so bad, that I just said.......no school tomorrow morning.  you're going to a color stylist --- this is beyond us repairing.  And i can't send you out in public looking like you do.

So that's where she is now.

I had to come home to take a business call.

I just called her cell phone and she's having the color that's in there removed.  Once that's done, they will select a color close to her natural shade.

I guess I'll see it in about an hour.

I've got my fingers crossed and my credit card handy.

These are the things that give me wrinkles.....

Do you have any hair disasters you'd like to share?

I once went to get a trim got a bit distracted and before I knew it the girl cutting my hair had chopped off more than I had instructed. I was furious! To correct it I had to get a much shorter haircut than I liked and for the next few weeks my hair looked like a mushroom.

My hair color is jet black, I always wanted highlights. So the first time I did them they came out really nice. The color stylist had pick out a nice red. Well I moved to Chicago and didn't know anyone that could retouch the highlights. So my mother-in-law took me to her color stylist. I remember that when the first stylist did it the mixture looked reddish. This new mixture look almost orange. I told her that ans she said they would come out red. So I let her do it. Instead of having these nice red highlights. I had this orange looking things. I started crying so hard because that weekend was my daughter's Baptism. I did not take one picture that weekend.

Hair? Specifically hair disasters? No, I am so sorry, I wish I did, I want so
badly to have had one, just so I could write to you about it. But, sadly
    none !

In high school I tried to bleach my dark brown hair blond.  It came out the color of the line in the middle of the road.  This, of course, was a couple of weeks before graduation.  I had to put temporary dyes in my hair every 3-4 days.

A few years ago my BF wanted to see what I'd look like with black hair, so I used a temporary dye.  I could not get the stuff out.  Finally I had to cut my shoulder length hair very short and I looked like I had a tortoise on my head for a couple of months while the brown came back.

I steer clear of any color more than 2-3 shades different than what I have.  I think your daughter will have to have the color stripped and new color put on.  It will make her hair very dry, so stock up on deep conditioners.

I think my older daughters were about 10 and 8. The oldest one thought it would be a great idea to take the silly putty that she had just found in her Easter Basket and smash it into her sister's hair!  Oh my gosh, what a mess!  I was not able to get it out at all so ended up giving her a major haircut...she had short hair for quite a while, lol.  You know, my mom told me never to buy my kids silly putty...I sure found out why!
  • secretlife said on May 04, 2007....

allaround:  why is it that almost every woman i know has had the 'too short' experience with their hair?

leadoff:  some stylists aren't good with color.  and reds are especially hard to predict.  it's awful that you didn't get to take pictures on your daughter's baptism.

mobil:  you can write anything at all to me anytime you'd like.  don't you know that?

unique:  yes, i do believe she's learned the lesson of what happens when you go so different than your natural color....it's very very difficult to get back to it.

they ended up having to do the strip process twice.  and then they colored.  the hair deal was 245.00!  90 each for the stripping....twice...

also they sold me some products warning that all of these processes were going to cause damange, so hopefully she'll avoid any further of that.

    an expensive mistake.

ann:  i never thought of silly putty in your hair.  my middle daughter did a wad of bazooka bubble gum when she was 7 or 8......the result was a nice short haircut!!!

For a guy, surprisingly, yes, I've had a few hair disasters. When I was about 12 or 13 I put this stuff called Sun-In in my hair. Does anyone remember that stupid product? You were supposed to spray it on your hair and go lie in the sun for awhile, and suddenly you'd be blond. I was into the whole surfer look thing, so I wanted my hair to be blond. But it's a medium brown color and the Sun-In made it turn bright orange. But I didn't give up right away. I kept using it, hoping the orange would turn blond and it never did. It just got REALLY orange. So I had to shave my head. And I'd been growing it out for awhile so it really upset me at the time. And then once when I was a little kid, I let my brother cut my hair and I ended up with a mohawk. My mom just about died and again, I had the shaved head. I guess that's the beauty of being a guy. When you screw it up, just shave it off and start over.

Oh the poor girl. This was awful. I have my natural colour and I´ve never died my hair. ♥♥♥

OMG i  totally did this when i was fifteen.. only mine was crayola orange. we stripped as much of the red out as possible and  added in some blond highlights and some lowlights on the lower layers.. it looked much better when all was said and  done....
  • CreativeWoman said on May 04, 2007....
I tried to frost my own hair once.  I put on the little cap and used the tiny little crochet hook thingy to pull out little strands of hair.  I followed the directions exactly.  I applied the color and waited the shortest amount of time.  I nearly died when I looked in the mirror to find I did not have one frosted highlight.  My whole head of hair had been bleached platinum blond!   That was not what I wanted.  It didn't flatter me at all.  My sister came over and did an emergency hair color job on me.  I ended up with my original color again.  Thank heavens!

I feel for your daughter.  I hope the salon made it all better.  :-)

I have a real problem with the hair on my back,  I shave it off regularly but it grows so fast and thick, I have the nickname of "Razorback", hey isn't that a pig or warthog?
  • fearing said on May 04, 2007....
Mine turned green one time.  Seriously, the color of a Mountain Dew bottle and wouldn't wash out.  Luckily the lady that lived across the street was a hairdresser and she fixed it.
  • Jenna said on May 04, 2007....
$245.00...are you serious????? Does it look ok for senior pics?  There is an opportunity for retakes too you know.  You said it...an expensive lesson!
  • secretlife said on May 04, 2007....

evil_twin:  hmmm it's friday night, so i'm wondering how that date of yours is going tonite!

boys do have it easier than girls in terms of hair disasters.  mine took a scissors to his hair when he was 4, and that afternoon he got his very first buzz cut!

skald:  my oldest daughter and her friends have been experimenting with hair color for 2 years now.  at first it was just highlights, but this past year she's graduated to some very 'different' (that's being nice) colors.  i decided there were worse things than coloring her hair and not to make a huge deal of it.  now, though, after it's cost me so much, i told her no more dyes until she can pay to repair any damage herself.  i'm not paying for that again!

Peenk:  was it still orange??  Her color looked like a sunburst with the yellow underneath, the crazy orange on top, and the sides and back with the red still there in clumps.

I had no idea how to fix it so that's why i took her to the salon.

CW:  i've never been able to do a good job with highlights.  I get foils done these days by someone who knows just what she's doing....

i don't know why it's hard to do...it sure looks easy, but it's deceiving!

mom:  ever consider a wax job?

fearing:  you know, as i was driving her there i told her i'd heard stories of color being able to turn hair green!  i never personally knew anyone who had that happen until now.  I bet that scared the hell out of you.

jenna:  245.00...they did the stripping process twice and that was 180.00  -  65.00 was to add the color in.  Then they sold me shampoo and conditioner and a leave in product because they said 1) the color might not hold well considering all she'd done to her hair 2) all that processing causes damage

so all in all with tip, it cost $305 and 4 hours of time.

it looks really nice.  the pictures aren't til first week of june.  i just didn't want her to wait til the day before to try to color it.  good thing, huh?

  • gingersoul said on May 04, 2007....

Secret......again...305 dollars????? Holy maccheroni....she must be more than perfect for the prom now......she had such a lovely hair color...i bet you were upset...i am glad she is ok again now...

The biggest disaster to my hair happened actually here in Usa...specificaly at Regis Salon inside one mall...i was tired of my auborn red and wanted go darker. But not THAT darker....this lady was a total mess...she looked suspicious to me when she didn't even separate my hair in strands to dyer them ..no, she took the color and simply slapped it all over my hair..like a freaking paint......

i dont even want to recall that horrible color that emerged from the towel ..it was something  like dark eggplant ....i was so furious i didnt leave her any tip and left th esalon with my hair still dripping.......

  • sweet_cookie01 said on May 04, 2007....
there was a time when i love dying my hair... i'd go from dark blond to red head... but my natural hair color is black... more of a salt and pepper look because at 16 have white hair already... once i tried burgandy... over my then dark blond dye... it didnt look well.... it turned to the shade of ugly rust... had to go to the salon to have it repaired... since then i dont dye my hair at home, i always seek professional help when it comes to my hair...for 5 years now i have retianed my black hair just to hide the white hair...
  • HairSprayGirl said on May 04, 2007....
as a hairstylist I sympathize with you all! I too have had some disasters. I have also performed some doozies. all part of the learning process. I am proud to say I have it down now! but 245 dollars? wow! you must live in a city where they can get away with that! I wouldn't have stripped it twice. how is the condition of her hair? no wonder you had to buy special shampoo and conditioner. did they do a protein treatment? I'm glad she got her hair fixed. does she like it? that can be pretty traumatic!
  • mom said on May 04, 2007....
    WAX?!!!!!!!! I might try that.
  • LadyGamer said on May 05, 2007....

Wow. I am so glad all my girls like their hair. But then, they all got GREAT hair. The kind that makes their already beautiful faces just shine, gorgeous hair. And all different too. So no one has envy or the feeling of just being like everyone else.

When I was in my early teens I let someone cut my hair. I trusted them and was not paying attention. They went beyond too short. They cut LINES down to the scalp on the sides. I haven't allowed anyone else near my head since.

  • PeenkEyedDevil said on May 05, 2007....
if i remember right.. fifteen was a long time ago.... we used someting called simply silver.. it took out tons of red and it ended up being this light auburn/ coppery kind of color with some darker red at the bottom. but the orange had faded alot and when mixed with the other colors just looked like my stylist had gone overboard with the highlihgts ;o)  (and i did have to pay for it myself)
My mom wasnt too pissed off.. not even when i shaved my head right before school started..
but even then, her philosphy was:
its hair, it grows back, and if you want to look like an idiot that is your choice.

i learned a lot about what i wanted people to see, when they looked at me.  and i think it hit home because i was allowed to make mistakes like that. ever since then i am very particular about how the world sees me and the image i am presenting..
i still color my own hair .... but i am much better at it now and i never stray too far from may natural shade....moslty because i hate doing my roots so often.

ginger: holy maccaroni is right!  i knew it was going to be expensive.  i guessed about 1/2 of what it cost.

i just want you to know that my daughter was thinking about going an eggplant color (on the purple side) this summer.  those plans have been canceled.  lol

sweet:  one of my cajun brother-in-laws has that really dark black hair and a couple of whites since he was 20ish...  I go to the salon to have my hair colored too.  i don't trust myself to do it.

hairspray:  i live in jersey, and here they call the places that sprout up every 10 miles or so, salons...

they're very fancy and completely overpriced.  A regular haircut in one of these places runs around $60.  But the price is by the 'grade ' of stylist.  So it can cost you $120 for a cut at a place like this.

We have places that do quick cheap ($20) cuts.  I opted to take her to the salon only because her head was a complete disaster.

They gave me the color specialist.--  they stripped it twice because the color did not come out after the first go-around.

Her hair condition is good today -- they also glazed it after they colored and she had conditioners in between.  They sold me a color shampoo/conditioner and a leave in product...hopefully this won't ruin her hair.

she likes her hair.  it's lighter than her natural by a shade or two, and has a tinge of red in it.  she was scared to death about what happened.  hopefully enough to stop her from doing that again.

LG:  i had a hairdresser who did that to me when i was in my early teens and that kept me away from them until i was 20.  alls it takes is one bad experience, and we don't want to go back...

you're lucky your girls aren't tempted to experiment!

peenk:  i'm not especially happy about all this coloring and cutting experimenting that's going on with my daughter.  but i think, like your thought, that this is a relatively minor thing to experiment with.  and i think it's ok to allow them to make mistakes while they're still here for me to guide and help.

of course i did pay for her hair to get fixed this time.  however i will not be paying for the next mistake.  she will either live with it, or pay to have it fixed herself. :-)

I hate hair weaves but i let my stylest place one in when I did the idol audition and when I had it removed 3weeks later I was had HUGE BALD SPOTS in my head.

She told me it was Alopecia but it was from the weave being ripped out of my head(I'm so Not Stupid). NEVER AGAIN. My hair is just growing back in those AREAS and i had to wear it down for months before it could be curled and properly styled.

Tell your baby NOMORE SELF EXPERIMENTATION leave some things to the professionals and this is one of them.

  • husbandhater said on May 05, 2007....
I've experimented with color but I've always liked the results. Never had to have anything fixed.
  • leadoffkarma said on May 05, 2007....
Well it wasn't all lost I waited about a week and found another color stylist that was actually good and he fixed it. So I took my daughter to a portrait studio and took some shots of her and I so that I at least I had some pictures.

  • gingersoul said on May 05, 2007....

HGS....you should come over here in Dallas....you know what they say...everything is bigger in Texas?.....well, it is applied to the hair and their prices too...

There are salons arouund here the ask the same price Secret paid ONLY for highlights.....i swear it....and since people is willing to pay that much they dont feel shameful in asking for it....

The more expensive cut and color i had here has been around $135....only color and some trimming, please note....it has been done perfectly as i wanted but still......neverhless to say i never put foot tin that salon again....(unfortunately...lol...)....my hairstylist was a charatcter...Jimmy...great professionist...he did my hair dressed like Madonna when she was in the glittery cowboy hat phase...he was looking better than her....lol...and he was an avid garderer too so we talked about peonia and roses and tulips all the time...sigh...i miss him....lol....

Secret... no eggplant noooo!!! Glad she changed her mind...my daughter asked me last week if she can dye blue the tips of her hair....i kind of like it ...maybe this summer and then they will have to go before school starts again.....

  • glitzNglam said on May 05, 2007....

Oh no! How is everything now? better i hope :)

My natural hair color is dark brown...and a loooonnnngg time ago i decided to die my hair blonde ( dont ask me why) and it turned out orange too!  everyone called me "vitamin C"  she was like a one hit wonder singer...but anywho i didnt have any money to go to a professional so i jus stuck with it and eventually the color started to fade and turned out not so bad.  but ever since then i told myself i will never color my own hair again!

  • Alyss said on May 06, 2007....
evil_twin, hahaha! I remember sun-in my sister used a whole bottle in one sitting and went from a gorgeous blonde to a, well it wasn't good...

SL an expensive life experience, hope the year book photos come out well.
  • secretlife said on May 07, 2007....
hh:  omg, you actually had bald spots from taking the weave out?

i think my daughter learned a valuable lesson and it'll be a while before she experiments on her own again...*fingers crossed*

leadoff:  that was a great idea to go and 'fake' some pictures afterwards.  you'd have hated not to have any to remember that special day by.

ginger: yes, before this disaster, she was planning to go 'eggplant' this summer.
those plans have been spoiled.  i told her not even the think about hair color this summer.

glitz:  there was no way i could let her live with that orange/yellow disaster.  especially with her senior pictures coming up!  it's much better now - a little more red and a shade or two lighter than her original color, but 1000% more natural.

alyss:  yes a very expensive life lesson.  the senior  photos are june 5.  i'll probably have to take her back to have her roots touched up.  that visit she assured me will be $40.  i told her after that she's on her own with mother nature.  i think the summer sun will lighten it and she'll be fine until the fall.
