I live near a small university and I see lots of young people, especially women, wearing their plaid or flannel pajama bottoms out in public. They are quite a common site down the aisles of Wal-Mart. They usually have on a t-shirt and/or sweatshirt with them. Sometimes they have their fuzzy slippers on too.

It's not something I've ever done even though I know it's comfy. I have a cousin in her late 40's that goes out like this all the time. I save mine for relaxing at home before bedtime.

Do you wear your jammies in public? Is this just a university or small town thing?

    No, I do not.

I don't even wear shorts to work even though many of my co-workers do.

yes i do. its quite comfy. one time i went to the mall wearing my pajamas tshirt and no bra!!!

I have, but only if I'm playing taxi for someone and I don't have to get out of the car. My daughter did it all the time in college. They all dressed alike: baggy flannel pants, a hoodie, and hair up in a messy pony tail. In my daughter's case, she always had a softball visor on.

    Tin,
I'll wear shorts, but not the jammies in public.

    queen,
I guess you were comfy!  :-)

    Mimi,
That's the exact look I'm referring to.  I guess I'm a little behind the times. I'm beginning to sound like my mother. {shiver}    :-D

CW -- I'll wear shorts in public, just not to work. I guess that's a different subject, though.

My legs do tend to be white, skinny, and pasty. Maybe I shouldn't wear shorts in public -- but isn't that a positive feedback loop?
  • Zayda said on May 04, 2007....
I did when I was in college. But now, no I wouldn't wear my jammies in public. Well, not the flannel jammie pants or any kind of pj's like that. (Although, there is something to be said for turning a nightie into a camisole top to wear under a blazer or cardigan.)

I wear yoga pants if I am running errands or chauffeuring the little guy to school or to some activity.

CW, the furtherest I've gone outside in my PJs is down to the edge of the garden to put out the garbage. . .and then I always put my robe on!

In South Africa, which is quite conservative, I dont think I ever saw anyone out in any public situation in their PJs - I haven't seen it here in the UK either, execept to go out to the car quickly or put out the garbage.

The "oddity" that one would see in SA on occassion - and only in one of the population group - is ladies going out to the shops with curlers in their hair.  I always thought that was so funny, but I'm sure if you grow up with it then its not strange at all! LOL

for the past few years these have been quite a fashion statement with young girls-

Its not a small town thing or a university thing. While I lived in Chicago, my mother-in-law and sister-in-law would always go out in flannel pj's and a sweatshirt and slippers. It did not matter what time it was they were out there like that. They would make fun of me because I would get up shower and get dressed even if I was staying in the whole day.

I grew up in Miami and that was never seen pj's were worn when you where home and you didn't have visitors. I was raised to get up in the morning, shower and put on shorts and shirt or jeans and a shirt Unless you were sick and were going to be in bed were you allowed to stay in pj's.

CW, I did when I was in my 20's and if I had a hangover and needed my cure.  My cure was a coke from McDonalds.

I actually did it about a month ago so I didn't have time to think about staying home.  It takes A LOT for me to leave my house and when I have the feeling to go, I have to just do it.  Little Daily wasn't taking her medicine and I had to go to the pharmacy to buy a new flavor.  My Husband was going to go, but I had to just do it.  I put sneakers on.  I would never wear my slippers.  My PJ's could easily pass as workout clothes, lol!

    Tin,
I follow you now.  I'm very fair complected but I still wear shorts when it is really hot out. I understand about not wearing them to work.

    Zayda,
I've worn the yoga pants on occasion too.

    Mimi,
I have a pair of flannel pants that I only wear at home that have pink flamingos on them. :-)

    polar,
I live out on a farm and I still don't go out in my jammies even to feed the kitties.  I guess I am modest.  It would be my luck for someone to drive by.  :-)

    Lioness,
I do like the jogging wind pants.  I'm kind of jeans gal though.

    sweet,
I've never wanted people to assume I just rolled out of bed and went to the store.  I'm sure that isn't always the case for people who wear their jammies out in public.  It sounds like it is a trend or fad.

    KC,
I don't do it.  Never have.  You do see a lot of people dressed that way these days.

    ed,
Well, in your case that would be called streaking.  :-)

    mom,
I know I wouldn't be comfortable out in  public in them either.

    secret,
Looks like it here to stay from what I'm reading. :-)

    lead,
I was raised the same way. :-)

    Daily,
I'm glad you got out of the house. (hugs)  I'm sure you were fine in yours.

I sleep in sport shorts.  But its all over NY also....chicks in PJ's.  But, I think its a lot like the spandex thing..."there are some that can pull it off, and damned just out of order for others".  Doesn't mean I understand why women are doing this PJ display, and as a guy, not even close to being offended by it either. : - )

It's a college thing when going to class. When I went back to school 94-98 ( I was 26), it was easy to dress like that especially when you are too tired to figure out your wardrobe after a night of studying (or going out)!

I usually had a ball cap with my ponytail stick out, flannel pants or shorts, t-shirt and a hoodie sweat shirt.

The other style was wearing leggings with a really baggy sweatshirt or huge flannel shirt over it.

Today I wouldn't wear PJ's in public. What is interesting I am seeing high school kids running around like that. Nothing ever stays in college.

I wear yoga pants and tee or tank maybe twice a week when I go to class at my university. Usually I wear jeans, nice top and a sweater. I hate seeing girls in pj pants/sweats/etc!!! I don't get it. Well...I get wanting to be comfortable. But the whole "slob" look is totally unappealing. You can be comfortable and hot at the same time in far better clothing. There's my 2 cents on a major fashion no-no!
  • Eilan said on May 04, 2007....
I wear men's flannel PJ bottoms to putter about the house in.  I'll occasionally wear them when I pick up my daughters at school if I'm not going to be seen.  I have a pair of Snoopy pajama bottoms, but I draw the line at wearing character pajama bottoms when I leave the house.

No, because when I worked at a restaurant in the Rockies, these girls addicted to crack/cocaine used to wander around in their dirty pajamas.  They acted out-of-control, spacy and paranoid.  I wasn't impressed.  I am not against a t-shirt, cardigan sweater and track pants, but pajamas are for home.  Why would you go grocery shopping in your underwear or a bikini?  If you must wear a swimsuit, put a pair of shorts and a jacket over it.

Remember 'no shirt, no shoes, no service'.  It was for hygienic reasons these rules were made.  It was about standards of courtesy and appropriateness, the same standards we use to kick out smelly drunks who urinate on the floor and then sleep in the disabled bathroom stall.  There have to be some standards in society.  Nobody wants to look at a hairy, dirty construction worker covered with perspiration in A&W or an espresso cafe.  Casual wear is one thing-who objects to jeans and a short-sleeved polo shirt with Oxfords or moccassins?  I don't.  Casual Friday at work is okay:  this doesn't mean you can come to work looking like the 'local ho on the corner'.  Leave her to do her job and you can do yours, properly, get my drift?
  • CreativeWoman said on May 04, 2007....
    Cam,
I guess the pajama look must be here to stay until. I just don't feel dressed if I go out like that.  Maybe that's why you like it as a guy? :-)

    princess,
Trends to spread, I suppose.  When I was in college it was the Madonna look from her beginning days that was the big trend.

    Mimi,
We could make this a spectator sport.  I'll line up some lawn chairs.  :-)

    ed,
But she'll be wearing jammies.  :-)

    UI,
I don't argue that they are comfortable.  To each her own, I suppose.

    Kay,
I try to look a litte nicer too when I'm out and about.

    Eilan,
I wear mine around the house at night a few hours before bed.

    skald,
The jammie bottoms do look warm.  :-)

    cotter,
Yes.  There is a time and a place for everything.

Like ed and pess I sleep commando.....I m totally convinced that no one wants to see my 'fur' jammies in public. I think there might be a lasw against it.
I do own jammie bottoms that are very difficult to distinguish from judo pants or sweats. I will wear them if its a trip to the corner store or a quick run in the car. I do wear them at home when I want to feel particularly cosy.
  • LadyGamer said on May 04, 2007....

So it is funny that you posted this because I had just posted something similar myself no to long ago. Being honest I have done this....Plaid bottoms with a band tee or a tank and oftentimes a hoodie. It really all comes down to comfort and where your comfort zone is. I have no problem being the mom that every one loves to stare at. I have often left the house with a pencil holding my hair in place wildly painted fingernails kool aid dyed hair and pj's. My kids love it and they really get a kick out of the whole "look what I did to mom today" look.

I have gone to the grocery store, the record store, bookstore, and other various places as such however I would never go to work like that. I wouldn't be able to feel professional enough.
