When I was growing up, we always had a lot of pets around the house. We usually had cats and dogs, and various hamsters and stuff. And when I lived with my ex-girlfriend, we had a cat. Honestly, I loved the cat. We got him together when he was just a kitten and I was really attached to him. His name was Spike, after a character on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He had these sharp little fangs that he'd always try to bite you with, so he was kind of like a vampire. Hence, the name Spike.

Anyway, we broke up and of course I didn't get to keep the cat. Suddenly our cat, was her cat, and she said it would be really lame for a single man to have a cat anyway. Cats are not manly pets. Single men should have dogs. Is that really true? Seriously. Is a cat an emasculating pet?

Right now, I'm living in an apartment on the third floor. It's only one bedroom and basically you couldn't really have a dog here. I mean, you could, but it wouldn't be fair to the dog. Not unless I got a tiny dog and I really hate those. If I get a dog, it's gotta be a big dog. We always had labs and golden retrievers. That's what I want. But since it's not really feasible right now, would it be lame if I got a cat?

I'm just sick of sitting in my apartment alone all the time with no other living beings in my presence. A girlfriend is the first choice, but it's a lot easier to go to the animal shelter and pick out a cat. They pretty much don't have a choice but to leave with you. You're paying for them. You can't really do that to get a girlfriend. Not unless you get a mail order bride. Only, I'm not that desperate yet, so I'm thinking cat.

So to the other guys out there, does this make me less manly to want a cat? And to the women, would I seem kind of gay to you, or would you just think it was cool that I liked cats? And yes, I'm in over thinking mode again. I do this a lot.

Well I personally don't like cats. I  am dog person, but seeing as you have a small apartment having a big dog would be unfair to the dog. I have always found guys who have little dogs weird. I have the same mentality that men should have big dogs. But I think cats are OK to have if you don't want a little dog. I would prefer a guy with a cat over a guy with a little dog.

A guy with a chihuahua or something is really lame That really does make a statement. And if he dresses it up in clothes? Well, that's just wrong. But yeah, I'm not into the little dogs at all. It is good to know that a cat is a better option though. I just want a pet again...

no, i dont think so. go get a cat... it might even make you look attractive to some women... I dont mind if a man has a cat... it seems to reflect that there is soft side of him.. its kinda cute.

evil_twin, i think that it's kinda silly for someone to say that a choice of pet is lame or effeminate. i think that says more about your ex-girlfriend than it does you.

Evil_twin, I wouldn't think it was odd at all if you got a cat.  I have a dog and a cat.  The cat is easier.  I can leave for a weekend and leave enough water and food and the cat is fine.  You can't do that with a dog.

Hey, is there any way you can keep one of your ex-girlfriends as a pet ?
    Just an idea....
I'm a dog person myself and I like German Shepherds, Labs, etc.  I think I would go for a short haired dog as I remember the shedding the Shepherds used to do but cats are ok if you live in a small apt. and there's plenty of breeds to choose from.
I used to have a white German Shepherd but after I had to put him to sleep I don't really want any more pets....except maybe a parrot...which would probably out live me come to think of it.
That's the only problem with most pets...you get attached to them and later they die off and it hurts, so you get another and the cycle starts again.

sweet_cookie--So a man having a cat might make him more attractive? That's good to know. I know lots of girls like cats (and dogs too, of course.) But if it makes me seem cute, that's good.

silverwhisper--I think my ex was just trying to use any tactic necessary to keep the cat. And she knows I get all stressed out and stupid over what other people think of me. She played on my insecurities and it worked. Now I'm paranoid to get a damn cat because of her.

secretlife--I'm glad to know I'm not the only one!

fearing--I definitely think cats are easier too. That's another reason why I don't want to get a dog right now. I don't have time to potty train it and I'm not around enough to really give it the attention it needs. Cats are pretty self contained animals that don't require that much to be happy.

RollingC--Man, I don't want any of my ex's as pets. The point of the pet is to have something around that loves you unconditionally and doesn't get mad at you for leaving toothpaste in the sink...But Labs are my favorite dog. That's what I'd get if I had the place for one. But they're also a lot work and tend to be destructive if you don't give them the attention they need. I learned that the hard way when I was a kid because my dog Sasha ate all the pillows on my bed one day!

evil_twin, if that's what she was doing, then don't you think that maybe living in fear of that is continuing to let her play you?

silverwhisper--Yes, she's still affecting me and my thoughts, even though we've been over for two years. I try not to let her win though. Which is why I think I'm just going to do what I want and not worry about what anyone else says. And I suppose if someone were to really have a problem with me having a cat, then they wouldn't  be the person I was looking for anyway, right?
