So many brands, models, types....which one to choose? Yet, there are some empirically tested guidelines for assessing the trade-in or resale value of your vehicle, be it a car, bike, truck, SUV or with American, European, or Asian specifications.

It's quite tricky figuring out which vehicles will retain their value well in the long run, especially up to 4 years.

However, a great rule-of-thumb method, IMHO, is to find out what the car rental companies are stocking! Teehee.

The main boosters for trade-in and resale values, according to the Official Used Car Guide of the National Automobile Dealers Association, in no particular order, are as follows:

Bigger engine capacity - choose a V-8 instead of a V-6, if possible

Low mileage per annum - below about 10,000 miles or 16,000 kilometers annually

Automatic transmission - always a great delight, if available

Vehicles that are in high demand but supply is low in the market - including limited edition models

Vehicles with a good reputation for sportiness, performance, durability, etc.

Air-conditioning

No expensive decorative packages or unnecessary embellishments that may give that broken down or tattered look with time - no vinyl roofs, diesel engines, etc.

Power steering

In-car entertainment - nothing as extreme as those seen on 'PIMP MY RIDE', of course!

    interesting...nothing about leather upholstery, though?

bronx- I always know about and have researched any vehicle to be purchased, but resale value doesn't come into it. The reason is I buy new and keep it for at least ten years. After that length of time, resale is of little importance.

In my opinion, people should only buy new if they keep them, but I feel its the best way to go. Most families have two vehicles and this way you get a new one every five or six years, and know its taken care of.
  • Susmaryosep said on May 03, 2007....
In Malaysia, the second hand car values have been screwed by the Govt's "National Automotive Policy", implemented apparently to line some pockets..... and most 2nd hand cars can be sold as scrap!!!!
  • Bronx said on May 04, 2007....
SW: leatherupholstery would rank among the 'expensive decorative packages' - unless it comes as a standard accessory.

Funny thing I saw today - a Toyota owner who put mud guards beneath his bumpers at each end and painted them white, along with the rest of his vehicle.

That would make him lose a few hundred dollars at resale time because removing them would affect the condition of the original bumpers and would probably require the new owner to get a new paint job for the entire car again!
  • Bronx said on May 04, 2007....
beyond: yes, buying new is always a wonderfully thrilling experience!

Keeping a car for ten years would require one to really have a soft spot for it or something.

The number of cars in a household really depends on affordability, availability of parking space, and the number of people who want or can own one.

However, the ideal time to resell and make up the difference for another new one/brand or to trade-in your car for the latest model is 4 years - some do it every two years, when the value is still very high.
  • Bronx said on May 04, 2007....
Susmary: that's such a great pity - politics really is a dirty business sometimes!

I'm wondering though whether the policy thrust is toward people owning new cars or towards people getting cheap parts to build indigenous cars?
  • Susmaryosep said on May 05, 2007....
The policy is to "protect" the National Car, by limiting the import of other makes. But by giving special Approved Permits (AP) for imports to "CERTAIN" individuals, at one stroke, the line the pockets of some, and screw the National Car at the same time. And the other consequence is that second hand cars cost more if sold by weight!!!
  • Bronx said on May 05, 2007....
    Susmary: Holy cow!

Then by all means, sell 2nd hand cars by weight - throw in some old anvils in the boot/trunk and fill the spare tyre/tire with lead or something.

    That should show them! Heehee.
  • Susmaryosep said on May 05, 2007....
Ya, like in the 2004 Tsunami charity drive, most malaysians donated old bras and underwear, and even a clowns's uniform......... hahahahah
  • Bronx said on May 06, 2007....
Susmary: hahaha...that's a very good one.
  • Susmaryosep said on May 06, 2007....
Yes it would be funny but it's sad because it's true! malaysians are the most apathetic people in the World, much worse than the Chinese, who though they use the world as their ash trays and spitoons, at least they protect their Heirtage Sites..... Just come to Malaysia and experience our smelly taxis, toilets, and sewage strewn beaches.... Sad, sad!!!!!!!
  • Bronx said on May 07, 2007....
Susmary: That's so sad....I've learned that if you're going to give or donate something, it is best to give the best that you can afford!

Hmmmm.....pity that image is not at all what the 'Malaysia, Truly Asia...' ads on CNN try to put across.
  • Susmaryosep said on May 09, 2007....
We are quite unique, but not integrated! Even the Arabs have complained about those things that I mentioned, and you should look at the destruction of our highlands, and the pollution of our rivers.!!!! All in the name of 'development'.. We are trying very hard to surpass Indonesia and the Philippines as the 'greatest' destroyer of our forests! The rest of the world has also played a part in the destruction, by paying premium prices for our lovely timber, not asking if they were logged in a sustainable manner( as if that were possible anyway).. Truly a Sad Situation.....
  • Bronx said on May 10, 2007....
    Susmary: that's really so sad...

Never had any idea about the things happening beyond the beautiful beaches and palm plantations!

Well, I guess that's the price of accelerated development for a true 'Asian Tiger'.....
  • Susmaryosep said on May 12, 2007....
"Asian Tiger"?? Philippines was the tiger in the '60s, with its economy and development second only to Japan. Now it's just a Kuching Kurap, whiich in Malay means a cat covered in ringworms!!! If we are not careful, Malaysia will take over this title in the next decade or two..
  • Bronx said on May 13, 2007....
Ouch....'kuching kurap' sounds bad enough even untranslated!

I wonder what my friend, Hai Yun, would say now?
  • Susmaryosep said on May 14, 2007....
Hai Yun? Who is he?  BTW, you should watch the Philippines election commencing today! The counting can take 2 weeks, and also the killing continues.............
  • Bronx said on May 15, 2007....
Susmary: he was a college friend of mine...

Yes, unfortunately, the killing continues - I am keeping tabs on it.
  • Susmaryosep said on May 15, 2007....
It will be at least 2 weeks before anything is final, and then the protests will kick in! By the time everything is settled, the next election comes along.........
  • Bronx said on May 16, 2007....
Susmary: A really vicious cycle, isn't it?

Let's just wait and see what the results would be like....
  • Susmaryosep said on May 18, 2007....
Yes, and that's why almost all the filipinos who have migrated have gone to the US..! The good ones don't go back, and the bad ones just continue the 'rape' of the conutry. If the Philippines don't have its millions of overseas workers supporting the economic system, their country would now be like Iraq, maybe worse????
  • Bronx said on May 18, 2007....
Susmary: that's an interesting point of view!

Mrs Arroyo went to Harvard, if I recall correctly, and then returned home to engage in politics...

What do you think of her and her performance as President?.
  • Susmaryosep said on May 18, 2007....
Gloria is a cheat. when she took over from Estrada, she promised not to stand for reelection, but swallowed her promise later. She is accused of rigging the votes, and her phone call to an elections commissioner (Hello Garcia) is infamous for its proof of the desire to rig the ballots! Immediately on becoming President, she nominated her hubby's cronies to "important" posts like the Chairman of Pagcor, the authority that controls all gaming revenue from Casinos etc. Her hubby has suspicious bank accounts, and Philippines has the most secretive banking laws that prohibit open investigation. Her children are now politicians in a province well supported by 'Jueteng' Lords, those kings of the Illegal gambling syndicates, those syndicates that are well known to finance election campaigns, all not proven of course. Going to Harvard does not make you honest does it?? an Honest pilipino politician is an oxymoron of the first degree! She has the most sycophantic way of oratory! (puke, puke) BTW, I am not a filipino! hahahahah
  • Bronx said on May 19, 2007....
Susmary: you're so precious! Hahaha - You're not a filipino, so now I can believe totally what you say!

Seriously though, isn't it amazing how most people in the developing world equate a foreign-educated native to a potential political leader back home, no matter the character of such an individual?

  • Susmaryosep said on May 20, 2007....
I hve workd there for almost 10 years, .. dealing in Govt joint ventures with foreign corps. I can write a book on how to talk to filipino officials. Now the ladies are another thing.... I can also write a book about them ....... heheheheheh
  • Bronx said on May 21, 2007....
Susmary: you know, you may just get a good and honest deal on those two books at lulu.com, when you decide to write them....

    Or, you could try Booksurge.com.
  • Susmaryosep said on May 21, 2007....
Thanks, but I got writer's cramp at the moment...... Too much beer glass lifting, I think..... hahahah .. BTW, another mayor and a councillor have just been shot. Even when you win, you lose??? :-(
  • Bronx said on May 23, 2007....
Susmary: yup, that could cramp your style a bit...haha.

That's so terrible..."life is hard, then [we] die", as one of my favorite TV detectives used to say...we can't win them all I guess.

Er...Bottoms Up and down the hatch, Susmary! haha...
  • Susmaryosep said on May 23, 2007....
Latest; policemen arrested for 'shooting and burning' a school, used a a ballot counting center..... !
  • Bronx said on Jun 02, 2007....
Susmary: hi...that's really quite surprising - their fellow officers arrested them for arson and assault with a dangerous weapon?

There must be lots of good policemen over there, if so, IMHO.

Now just tell me where those school kids will stay to study/learn when school resumes!

In some developing countries, the act would probably have remained one by 'unknown persons' forever - money talks, crime listens, and the Police keeps everything under wraps, rather than under lock and key!
  • Susmaryosep said on Jun 03, 2007....
In the Philppines, an honest policeman is an Oxymoron! Kids' schooling? The political circus has been more impotant than a few million kids learning ABC right? hahahah
  • Bronx said on Jun 05, 2007....
Susmary: that's a really sad and terrible situation over there...... :  (
  • Susmaryosep said on Jun 06, 2007....
Yes, you talk to your goodfriends there, and all they say is... we are trying to leave the country, why are you trying to come here and seek business???? Those who can afford it, have already 'one foot' in the US of A.. You can go to the congress and the senate, and if there is one congressman or senator who says he or she does not have ANY connection whatsoever with USA, that guy is a born liar, or the next Saviour, and you can shout, "hallelujah"... It's true
  • Bronx said on Jun 06, 2007....
Amazing, simply amazing....the lure of 'paradise' and lucre....and peace of mind!
  • Susmaryosep said on Jun 07, 2007....
Yes, and all true. But I am going there next week for several days, for some serious business, and some monkey business.. . . . . . :->
  • Bronx said on Jun 09, 2007....
Susmary: haha...somehow sounds like some very serious hanky-panky will be afoot over there.
  • Susmaryosep said on Jun 09, 2007....
Ya, business, monkey..... hahah. I have many good friends there, and I have to see them, before I get admitted to the old folks' home!  Here is something that you may like to read about the mess that is the Philippines .
    It's reall sad..........

This will clear up why today is not being a piece of cake....
It feels like it's been such a long day. I'm ready for bed....
As is usual in our lives, nothing can be easy, and there's always got to be complications. I hate my husband's truck....
Is that his real reason?...
