Please!!! I need help!

My Show

A young black man who comes from a rich family, after receiving his master’s degree in English and finished working at a inner city youth center, he decided that he wanted to go back home to teach high school English. He gets a job teaching at the worst high school in Gary, Indiana, which is West Side High School.

West Side High School is the worst school in Gary, Indiana. West Side has the lowest tests scores and highest dropout rate. Majority of the teachers do not care about if the students at West Side get an education or not because of they are here for the paycheck. So, this young black man decides to take this job because he feels he can make a difference in the lives of his junior English class like a girl who is an honor student but also is a single parent to an infant, a basketball player who has a chance to make it to the NBA after high school, and a student who has a drug addict mother trying to take care of himself and his mother.

The man’s mother disagrees with him working at this school and feels that he can do better working a “better” paying job. She feel that he cannot change the lives of these students because she of their environment. She feel that it is up to them to get out of poverty and make a “better” lives for themselves instead of her son going into that community. But he disagrees with his mother and works at West Side High where he finds love in the school’s secretary, who recently divorced her abusive husband of 10 years.

to know more, ms bradford, it would be helpful to know better what the sensibility of the show would be. are there any other TV shows to which it might be compared, to give a sense of what viewers might feel after watching an episode?

Ohh, I love it. Reminds me of Stand and deliver, sort of.

How about Deliverance? The search for a better life, a search for meaning, and a search for love and belonging? Oh, I like it. Deliverance.

daily: It's for school, but I was thinking HBO or Showtime because in my scripts. I cursed. Thank you.

Silver: It has the elements of the movies Dangerous Minds, Coach Carter, and television shows like the Wire.

Tbs: I like the title. I will have a little bit of an episode.
  • silverwhisper said on May 02, 2007....
what about once more unto the breach? he's an english instructor, so shakespeare would seem appropriate. plus, the seeming futility would seem to be reflected here quite well, i would think.

My show deals with the issue of class because this teacher comes a rich family and these kids are poor.
  • tbs230 said on May 02, 2007....
You need something catchy, with tons of meaning. It's a dramatic series right? With witty comments said by student and professor alike. And it's really about him learning a lesson by teaching perseverance to these inner city kids? Right?
  • MsBradford07 said on May 02, 2007....
    Yea.
  • tbs230 said on May 02, 2007....
    Oh yeah. I love it!

    Where's my thesaurus?
  • wombat said on May 02, 2007....

Just to throw something out there:  How about something to do with language such as:

    Active Voice

    Future Perfect Tense

    Parallel Lives

    Languages of the Heart

(or something better, but along those lines)

(By the way, I believe Deliverance is the  name of a movie) But a good title!

  • tbs230 said on May 02, 2007....
Wombat: is it really? Shoot! umm, how about Indiana Road? And like the pilot can somehow put the poem The Road Not Traveled by Robert Frost into good use. Oh man, MissB, if this goes through, I will sooo be an intern! Please please please!?!?!?
  • wombat said on May 02, 2007....

Yes, it's that old movie with Burt Reynolds, Jon Voight and can't remember who else--

    I like your ideas though!

MsBradford07:  Didn't mean to be rude--I am just neglectful sometimes.  I did read--and thought it sounded like a good idea for a show.  We need something like that on tv, with more heart and less fantasy, violence and fluff.  I wish you luck!

  • mom said on May 02, 2007....
This may seem lame but what about "West Side High"?  Or do you want something a little more poetic?
  • wombat said on May 02, 2007....
mom:  I think we have a winner, in my opinion.  Sounds like the title of a show just as it is.  (and just close enough to West Side Story to make people pay attention!)  That's a good thing.  You are on the ball, as usual....
  • VICARIOUS said on May 02, 2007....
Gary West; it sounds like a persons name and it is fun when you discover it isn't. Just make sure you have someone say it in dialogue in one of the episodes. People will say, ohhhhhhh, it is a place. Makes us viewers feel important when we figure out a "secret" from a writer.
  • tbs230 said on May 02, 2007....
lol, mom, I was thinking West Side High throughout, but figured that was too obvious...that's what happens when you overthink, you miss the obvious. lol

Vic: I like that, but wouldn't it have to be West Gary to make sense?

MissB, seriously, I'm in love with this idea. Absolutely in love!
  • wombat said on May 02, 2007....
tbs230:  I got side-tracked at first by not thinking of it as a "series."  But mom hit the mark, (and you) I think with the simple title.  I can see the promo ads on tv in my head already!  So, MsBradford07--are you listening to them?
  • VICARIOUS said on May 02, 2007....
Tbs, think of as if in a rap song and they are talking about where they are from. Gary (as in Indiana) West as in the obvious. If it is to easy to figure out the illusionary surprise is gone. Rap vernacular seems to have hidden meanings, like this possible show title.
  • tbs230 said on May 02, 2007....
wombat: aahhh, I see. You can see them too huh? lol

Vic: I see, that would be so cool. I can see it as part of the school song. Or maybe it's a rap that one of the students come up with.

    oh the potential...!!!
  • wombat said on May 02, 2007....
    How about "West Side Indiana?"

  • wombat said on May 02, 2007....
tbs230:  It's what I do best--"thinking" of it, but too lazy to do it.  I wish I had been in advertising.  I think you guys "have it going on."  Again, Good luck, MsB!
  • brokenandused said on May 02, 2007....
MsBradford07: I love this plot, always good to watch. How about false pretenses? or fatal chances? or A story from the heart? good luck with it all!
  • mobil said on May 02, 2007....
West Side Story; That's an oldie but goodie, probably get in troube with it.

Go West Young Man Go West;  hmmm, outdated huh?

    How about;
    Love Found Love?

See, he loves what he's doing there, and he found this Girl too. hmmm
not bad.........thanks for letting me take a crack at it Ms.
  • tbs230 said on May 02, 2007....
It has to be something catchy, yet something that ties the series together. Look, for example at One Tree Hill, name of the town. Grey's Anatomy, Grey, a character, and Anatomy, because they are intern doctors.

So it has to be something consistent throughout the whole series, and has to have a connection with the theme. That's why I think it West Side High would work, but it sounds so non-inner city, that it would give the wrong vibe.

My title is so vague that it would only make sense if it was a reoccurring thing, which would just become redundant. *sigh* Same with Gary West...as smart as we would like to make people, it just doesn't work that way.

Again, if this is for HBO, it has to be cool and sexy, but simplistic. I mean, look what's on HBO now. Rome, The Sopranos, The L Word (very catchy actually), The Tudors, Big Love, etc.

It has to be good damn it!! (Can you tell that I've taken this to heart?)

I like Deliverance, or something along those line, something that is brief but captures the theme of the show. Maybe Free Standing, or Intro to Life, you know, a play on Intro to Lit or something like that. I don't know.
  • tbs230 said on May 02, 2007....
wombat: You think I have it going on? Really? Cool. I'm usually completely useless, but I have a soft spot for television.
  • RollingC said on May 02, 2007....
How about  "   Raising Gary Indiana, or Gary High ?? "

  • mom said on May 02, 2007....

Rolling those are some cool ideas. :)  I like those.

Tbs- you have a soft spot for TV, I just have a soft spot on my head.

  • pascodelta said on May 03, 2007....
If he is the Head, you could call it :  "A Matter of Principle", which would tie in with his decision to decline his mother's advice.

People are always saying that black people should do more to help eachother and an educated man swapping an easy life and higher salary, to 'do his bit', would also tie in.

I know the spelling is different, but, hey, it's poetic licence.

    Good luck   : )
  • MsBradford07 said on May 03, 2007....
Pasco: Great ideas. Tbs: thank you for the support. Wombat: thanks for the ideas. Also to mom, broken, rolling vicarious, and silver for your help.

Yes, that is it. Thank you. Thank you. If this show get on-air, I will thank you in public and I will pay you copyright fees for the title. I love it.
  • Caseinpoint said on May 03, 2007....

"West Side High" is the first thing that came to my mind.

or maybe "Lift Every Voice", which is a reference to the "Black National Anthem" which we sang at just about every school I attended growing up in brooklyn. Its a great song.

  • MsBradford07 said on May 03, 2007....
    Thanks, case.
  • VICARIOUS said on May 03, 2007....
Ms, don't get discouraged trying to find the title. I usually don't name something till after I write it, wait for the title to jump out at me. Write some episodes and pay attention to the dialogue, it will come.

Lol, this confusion was simply finding a title. Imagine if you asked others something about premise. Colaboration is hard when you only have one other skilled writer. Compromise isn't in some writers vocabulary. Careful when you ask for ideas, it will stress and depress. Trust your instincts.

Be prepared to have your work torn asunder. Don't let it get you down. Few things are screwy as when a director Hollywood's your screenplay or tv episode. My advice, don't be "married" to any idea; meaning don't be emotionally attched to the point that you will not compromise. It is there way or no way. I've know numerous writers over the years for tv shows, movies and books. Only the book writers have complete control.

    Best of luck.

I have an idea for you.

the Chicago Skyway goes right over the high school. I mean RIGHT over it, maybe a block away. The skyway is raised up, at least 20 stories over 5th avenue. It's your visual device, your symbol. Everyone driving over these people, left under the viaduct as society's forgotten people.

Each day they look up at the skyway, and hear the cars going back and forth. the kids dream of someday getting on the skyway and doing things. I think it's too large of a symbol to ignore. I would call the show 'The High Road', having a dual meaning of the teacher taking the high road in life, and this literal high road above the school.

that's my idea. hope it helps.
  • silverwhisper said on May 03, 2007....
do they still have elevated train tracks there, to take daniel's idea in a slightly different direction?
