From the window of my new room… a move that marks a rebirth for me… I’ve been able to see the earth coming alive again… from the bleak and barren winter branches of the trees to the full bloom of spring… all in one month!  I took a picture out my window when I first moved in, and nearly every week since then.  I thought I’d share the transformation with you.

The view out my window is of a little vegetable garden… the type that Polish families usually maintain somewhere on the outskirts of the city, but this block of gardens is right in the middle of the urban sprawl, giving a semi-rural feel that balances out the block of concrete flats that I live in.  The little green building is a storage shed for gardening tools and a charcoal grill that comes out every Sunday for a weekly barbecue.  (Meanwhile, my roommates’ attempt at barbecuing on our balcony brought an instant flood of complaints to our landlord, and the party was over in ten minutes flat… I think we need one of these gardens).

I’ll continue to take pictures of my view once a week (as long as I’m not traveling), so be sure to tune in to see my changing view come into full bloom!

    Kruu.....so nice...

I was walking my dog last night and i was thinking about how fast the scenery has changed around my place.

Like a blink of an eye.

Tall green trees have replaced their skinny bare branches with shining, murmuring foliage, miriads of birds sing and fly and nest in and out of them....flowers have bloomed in one nigth, it seems....there is a superb rose bush that now has 25 dark red roses,...i counted them...

    When Springs comes i always turn more homesick ....my country is so beautiful in Spring.......thank you for these pictures....{{{hugs}}}

Kruu, you remind me of what my hubby is doing. . .he has a bonzai that sort of "died" during the winter and since spring it has started "coming alive again".  This bonzai is photographed on a regular basis to plot its progress. . .my hubby is nature and plant "mad".  I will be sure to show him your pics too.  Thanks for showing us your view. . .it makes me feel "closer" to you. . .perhaps I should do like Skald did and show you my view too. . .we'll see! {{{{hugs}}}}} Polar

ginger -- yes, i did drink some ginger tea earlier this morning. hmmm... best drink for a cold rainy morning. you're right, it did cure my travel envy vis-a-vis kruu. but it worsened my travel envy for a certain lady's forthcoming italy trip!

kruu -- i see the pic you posted, i close my eyes, and i smell the magnolia in full bloom. your photo series reminds me of a time-life book showing a series of illustrations about the fantastic change of season sceneries in the temperate zone, drawn in full color and loving detail. complete with seasonal changes in wildlife, insects,  even cloud formations, etc.

I didn't quite keep up with this weekly as I had promised, but this is what my view in Szczecin looked like in mid-June, shortly before I moved.

Here's my new view in Prague at the Crow's Nest with the pirates.  This is looking straight out my bedroom window.

This is what I see if I stick my head out the window and look to the left.

    Horni View Right

And this is what I see if I stick my head out the window and look to the right.  Sadly, these views will change in a couple of days as I pack my things into my backpack and move out of the Crow's Nest.  sob... boo hoo...  But the good news is, I'll have a completely new view to share with you.   :)

kruu -- moving to a new place is always an adventure. you should have seen how i made i fuss of it once, when i moved my foxhole-like hut two hundred meters uphill within the same jungle camp perimeter. a moving van would have helped me back then... :-)

  • kruuyai said on Aug 31, 2007....
muun:  lol... I remember how moving used to be such a stressful thing.  I've always done it often, and I used to have a lot of stuff, so I'd always have to find a friend with a pickup truck or something to help me out.  That was the most stressful part.  I think I was losing friends, because people were always afraid I was going to ask them to help me move!  lol   But the last few moves have all been without the moving van.  Just me and my backpack.  In this case, there might be an extra trip for all the clothes I bought at the second hand shop in Kosice last week.  :)  This is almost the shortest move I've made, but not quite.  This will be about four blocks from my current flat, but when I was in college, I once moved a half a block away,  dragged my stuff through the alley by hand (many, many trips).  And when I was about 4 years old, my whole family moved next door.

And here (above) is the view from the living room at the Gulag.  Now you can begin to get a feel for it.  This was an unusually cloudless day, so the blue sky helps.  Notice the abandoned red kiosk done in Coca Cola red in the lower left.
  • hotaka said on Oct 11, 2007....

Hey, were you getting shorter? Because in the first four pics the lower pair of wires gradually goes higher in each succeeding frame.

The photos were really fun to look at. Don't you ever stop and think that on this whole planet with its billions of people only you and a few hundred others actually know about that garden across the street? That miniscule patch of the great Earth's surface is familiar to you. It is a part of your life, your history. I feel that way sometimes. It strikes me even more so being away from my homeland and all my friends. Before I shared the sights of my environs with many people I knew. Now I walk streets every day that they will never tred upon.

  • kruuyai said on Oct 11, 2007....
hotaka:  teehee... you are very observant.  In fact, I am getting shorter!  I think my bones are settling!  I never stopped to think about how many people knew about that garden across the street, but you're absolutely right.  Hmmm, maybe I can start publicizing it online and then sell tickets!  I'll cut you in on 50% of the profits for coming up with the idea.  How does that sound?  Thanks for that insight.  I'll never be able to look at my stomping grounds the same way again.  :)
  • hotaka said on Oct 11, 2007....
Just don't go stomping in the garden, eh? That might piss someone off.
  • kruuyai said on Oct 11, 2007....
hotaka:  What's that?  Don't go pissing in the garden because somebody might stomp off?  Why would I do that?  lol
  • gingersoul said on Oct 11, 2007....

Kruu....why? because you might do it.....lol.....

Hottie is right...i too think you are shrinking....the 50 are catchin up with you, lady?.....lol...

Anyway...about your Gulag pic...well.......it looks exactly like the neighborhood they had built on the back side of my city.......i am so used to this kind of buildings.... me....its just a suburban area...could be a lot worst.......just take the bus and go to the center....

and i see some green too.......

Its not like the first view you had but, hey....i still think you did the right move...{hug}..

  • kruuyai said on Oct 11, 2007....
    ginger:  You never know.. I just might.  Anyway... what could be worse than the suburbs?  lol  You know, even though European suburbs look so much different from American suburbs, I can't stand either one of them.  There's something about them that just gets under your skin.  Yuck.  I've only been here for a little over a week, and already the novelty of all the new gizmos is wearing off, and I'm finding it depressing to be way out here.  I have too much inertia to just pick up and go to the city.  I need to have it right outside my door. lol  You think I did the right move?  I did the only move i could.  I had no other options.  Fortunately, almost as soon as I moved in here, I got to put a deposit down on a beautiful old place opposite a park near the center.  I can't wait to move in and get pics of that place up here!  {{{hug}}}}}}}}}

kruu- Ok, let me get this straight, Little Miss Soap Opera.  You were kicked out of the Dark Soviet Bloc Gulag and went to this place, right?

Where is it? Is it in the neat part of Prague you wanted to live in? Is that what you meant by near the center?  The view is nice.

Will TT, hehehe and the Pirates fit in your life somehow?

I need a kruuyai pad and kruuyai pen just to keep up with you.
  • kruuyai said on Oct 25, 2007....
ginger:  Aren't those beautiful windows?  How long before the first snow?  I don't know... I was kind of hoping for a second shot at Indian Summer before that happens.  But if it has to be cold, I'd like it to be cold with falling snow.

beyond:  lol... Little Miss Soap Opera.. just call me LiMSO!  Well now, I haven't quite made it out of the Gulag yet, because of the stuff I started to write to you about and some more really weird stuff that happened this morning.  I was going to blog about it today, but got involved in a chat and am now too tired, but I'll probably write about it tomorrow.  Life is just getting too weird, and if you think it was a soap opera before, just wait until you read the new stuff.  Re:  TT, I think s/he's out of my life indefinitely.  I don't want to invite that energy back in again.  And hehehe and I occasionally exchange emails.  He's traveling around the world looking for a place to settle and recently asked me for the sites that I used to find a flat here, so I don't know if that means he's seriously thinking about moving to Prague, but I don't know if I could deal with all the hehehe's.  He really can be a smart ass.  A nice guy, but really a smart ass.   And the pirates?  Well, how could I ever abandon them?  They won't be showing up as often as before, but from time to time, I'll check in with them.  And I see a lot of Ms. L and she lives with Pegleg, so even without trying, I'm bound to run into him and Sinbad now and again.  I don't know about Jolly.  I wrote my first email to him a week or so ago and haven't heard anything back yet, so maybe he's gone as well.  But, that's always been my life.  People come, and people go.  I will work on finding a kruuyai pad and a kruuyai pen that I can send to you!

Kruuyai : I followed the link from your winter palace's post. and I got here. The first picture reminded me so much of what I have been missing living in the city. Everywhere I go there's cement- no soil. The only soil that I get to see are the ones in my mom's potted plants. In the province I can run barefoot and it will be the warm soft loam soil, and there will be fruit bearing trees everywhere- and i can just pluck a guava or duhat or santol. wow, I think I'll go to our province this coming holiday. Thanks for sharing these photos- they are inspiring. :)

At first, the most dramatic change in my view at the Winter Palace came from within.  I made these curtains to add a bit of cheer to my otherwise cold and bleak surroundings:As you can tell from my messy computer table, this is where I used to sit while I was blogging my heart out on SC!

It wasn't until early January, while my friend Lolita was visiting from Spain, that we really got socked with a good covering of snow.  It was the first real snowfall Lolita had ever gone out in.  She couldn't quite believe that we were actually going to go out in it.  She asked me if it was safe.  :)

  • kruuyai said on Mar 03, 2008....
    2008a 12

It took Lolita and me a long time to get our lazy bones out the door that snowy morning.  In fact, we didn't make it until afternoon.  What were we doing until then?  Just sitting at a windowside table in Kruu's corner cafe, watching the snow drift down and sipping hot chocolate.  What did we do after we went out?  Went to a couple of cozy cafes, watched the snow drift down and sipped hot chocolate.

The first thing I did when I moved to the Paris Commune at the end of January was to capture my view for you.  My new bedroom looks out onto an enclosed space in the middle of all the attached apartment buildings that line the streets.  The garden area is huge.  It's basically the entire interior of the block.  The biggest difference between this and my view from the Winter Palace is that it gets no traffic... no dogs being walked in the park... sniff.  But I opened the window the other day and heard birds singing.   And it's sooo quiet.

Here's my view looking off to the left..
