A car crash, that is.

First of all, I'm going to be ok.

My husband was driving and failed to yield at a green light.  I couldn't believe it was happening.  All I could see was a white car heading squarely for me on my side of the car as my husband turned in front of it.  It all happened so fast. My husband said he didn't even know we were going to be hit until he heard me scream.

It bent the axle or whatever it is called under the right front of the car because the tire is not in the proper place and it can't be driven.  The passenger side door is crunched in at the middle with the frame popped out at the top.  The glove box on the inside won't close, but I think maybe that is because my knee hit there.

What made it even scarier was that my window was down while a big white car was heading at me.  Amazingly, the only part of the other car that actually touched me was chards of its headlights that landed in my lap and on my feet.

No one was hurt except for me and my injuries are minor in the grand scheme of things.  My right shoulder is badly bruised from the underside by my armpit .  My right elbow is bruised at the joint and a bruise is spreading up my arm toward my shoulder.  I also have a bruise and scrape from where the seat belt held me tight. The right side of my neck and my right shoulder blade are also sore.  They seem to hurt a little more as the day wears on.

I'm so lucky it wasn't worse.

My husband and I have had disagreements about yielding at green lights for years.  The country boy just thinks green means go. Perhaps now he will learn his lesson.

The insurance hullabaloo will probably all fall into my lap.  I get the joy of all that tomorrow.  I would throw it at my husband if I knew he wouldn't mess it up.  I still might.

What a way to spend a birthday.

I'm glad to hear that you're relatively safe and sound. A half-second one way or the other and you might have had much worse injuries. I got into a similar cruncher a few years ago when I was in a desperate hurry to get somewhere on time. Fortunately the wifely one sustained no injuries except the scratches that one usually gets from a deployed air bag. I drive much more sanely now, even when I'm late.

It really is possible for an old dog to learn a few new tricks, if they're simple enough.

Your accident reminded me of one that i had years ago...my then to be husband was driving..it was very early in the morning, after a night of (let's say) intense activities he was dead tired and practically didnt see the curve and kept going straight.....the car rolled twice outside the road on the egde....and landed on the roof...we got out of there from the broken widndshield. I messed up my right shoulder and neck, with bruises all over the place and some cuts from the glasses.. It was quick and scary....

Yes, your bruises are going to turn purple and deep blue tomorrow..

David Halberstam was killed this week, when an undergrad who was driving him went through a green light just as your husband did. Halberstam, perhaps the greatest living historian, died nearly instantly as the car that hit him on the passenger side punctured his heart with a broken rib.

Tell your husband to pull up and look, even when the light is green. That's what driving defensively means. I'm glad you are alright, and could share that with us. Take care of your injuries.

    Ali,
He would have to stick around the house to baby me.  That's not going to happen.  I can take pretty good care of myself.  :-)

    minnie,
Thanks for the hugs. It was frightening.

    ginger,
Wow!  Your accident sounds way more frightening than mine.  I'm glad you were ok.  Thanks for the well wishes.

    Mimi,
I am doing a ok.  I had a good long vent session about it with my sister.  A little girl talk always helps. :-)  I'm very thankful it wasn't worse like you said.

    Mamie,
It is so good to see you!  Thank your for those healing rays of light. :-D  (I'll be checking out your blog soon.)

    MsStar,
Chicken soup from a friend always helps things mend.  Thank you.  I don't think the husband will forget this anytime soon.  At least, that is my hope.

    boyz,
Thank you for the great advice.  I will be sure to do that.

    tan,
Thank you for the sweet things you said about me.  I feel better already.  :-)

    fearing,
    Thank you so much.

    mom,
I was a little more shook up about it today than I was yesterday.  I keep seeing that car coming at me and hearing myself scream when I close my eyes.  I'm sure that will pass because I'm pretty stubborn about trying to push it out of mind. I'm certain there was divine intervention at play.  :-)

    Daniel,
It is frightening if I dwell on it especially when you know other people don't always survive these kinds of crashes.  As mom said, there must have been an angel with me.  It just wasn't my time to go.

The husband does need to learn to watch the other drivers around him.  He is too much of a gawker.

    RC,
Thanks.  He sure could use some driving lessons.

  • DeadlyJester said on Apr 30, 2007....

I was in a crash 2 days after my 21st birthday, in 2004. I was visiting family in St. Augustine and got t-boned by a high schooler from Jacksonville who was trying to get home before mommy & daddy found out she'd skipped school. I saw it coming as I was making a left onto US-1 out of the restaurant driveway where my step-son (he was 3 at the time) and I had just eaten lunch. Time does seem to stand still, or at least slow dramatically. In the span of less than 1/2 a second I thought "That car's going really fast. That car's not going to stop. Shit, this is going to hurt." I was right, it hurt like a mother-fucker. The muscles in my back are permanently jacked-up, I fractured a rib, hit my head, sprained my knee & ankle, bruised my wrist and the back of my shoulder, and got minor whip lash. The only effects I still feel now are a constant pain in my back (always at least a 5 on a 1-10 pain scale), and sometimes my rib twinges where it was fractured. Fortunately, all my step-son got was scared, no injuries.

I was in another accident back in January, where a guy turned left into me. That wasn't so bad. He didn't yield for the green light either, he didn't have an arrow. His dad (in the car behind the kid) told the FHP he should've stopped, but the trooper knew that because she was at the intersection at the time anyways.

People need to learn how to drive. Florida's terrible for drivers.

Happy belated birthday. I hope the insurance isn't too big a problem. (I got screwed the first time around).

  • CreativeWoman said on Apr 30, 2007....
    DJ,
It sounds like your first crash was way worse than mine.  I don't think I'll have any lasting affects from my injuries.

So far, it looks like I'm lucking out with the insurance.  Out of pocket expense is going to be $500.  I'm so happy we had good coverage.  Now I just need to keep my husband out of the body shop until the adjuster gives the ok.  We've been around and around about that a couple of times already

He's not a very good driver or thinker sometimes.
