Do dogs scare you? Have you had a bite or near-bite situation? What happened, how did you escape, and/or what did you do afterwards?

One dog expert says that when a big and dangerous dog is rushing or bounding towards you, you should stand still with your hands in your pockets - so that it won't have anything to sink its teeth into!

Great. Just great advice!

NOW, TRY THAT ALONE WITH A TWO-YEAR OLD DOBBERMAN, ALSATIAN, BULLDOG, ROTHWEILER....!

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Has this expert ever been attacked by a dog?

I was attacked from behind by a dog who thought the mower I was pushing was going to eat him or something. It ripped the back of my leg open and tore my pants. It was on a chain so ir wasn't to hard to get away. 12 stitches.

having once been scared by a dog when i was a kid, i can definitely agree that putting your hands in your pockets just isn't gonna happen with anyone who's been in that position. :>

bronx- I just love some experts. Advice like that can land you in the hospital. I spent a good part of my life around other peoples dogs and the last thing I'm going to do is stand there with my hands in my pockets.

Many a butt has been saved by topping a fence in a single bound.

gena: ouch...that must have been horribly painful.

12 stitches! Good thing the dog was chained, too.

It's just amazing how dogs seem to know who and where to bite - my first and only bite came in my teenage years at a friend's house when I followed him into a corridor on my way out.

Mother and son look-alike pair of dogs pounced but luckily only the mother got her teeth through my thick jeans - I saw the gash on my thigh only when I got home and undressed for a bath.

Luckily, the dogs were superbly taken care of and had had their shots regularly, his Dad confirmed.

    Scary!

    SW: you're so right!

You know, I often wonder how dogs sense fear in someone - my Mum is never scared of dogs. She just walks right by and they don't bark as much as they would me passing by.

My Dad believed that the emotional problems from losing them after a decade or so from old age was not worth the effort in keeping and loving them, then finding a replacement, etc.

So, I never kept any dogs nor got used to them!

The feeling one gets when confronted by a mean looking dog on a lonely road or pavement while strolling, IMHO, is almost indescribable - gives a new meaning to the term  'suspended animation'.

beyond: hi. Yes, one could easily be killrd, too, if it's a dangerous or fierce dog!

Yes, that's so true, over a fence in one bound or up a tree in a flash (had to do that once as a kid) - amazing how someone can be moved to stretch and extend his or her athletic abilities under such situations of panic attacks.

Many have been known to literally race the wind when fleeing a potential bite - even though running away may not be the wisest thing to do in a dog attack.

Bronx: the second part of my military career was handleing and training attack dogs. The first thing I will tell you is that you put your hands in your pocket around one of my dogs and you are going to get nailed in the crotch. A trained dog is going to bite you no matter what. Dogs that are scared or had been made mean can be stopped. Any time you can remove yourself do it, that often may not be the opportunity. If you have clothing that you can remove give it to them all the time yelling at the top of your lungs the word NO and keep repeating it. Everybody teaches thier dog that command. In the event that you are grab by a dog or know that it is going to happen try and land a good solid blow to the dogs nose, they are very senstive there and sometimes will deter them. If you have the chance good solid kicks repeatedly at the dog may keep him at bay. Anything that you can use to keep between you and the dog  use it even holding a book while he bites the other end is better than yourself. As said before  keep yelling a good solid command  with authority and if the attack stops back away always keeping yourself facing him.

    pessi: wow, thanks.

That was very instructive - the best advice I've ever had on dogs, IMHO.

    BTW, WELCOME TO MY BLOG!

After seeing Lord Laurence Olivier, in an old movie about Nazi Germans creating Hitler clones, trying to figure out what command to use to ward off a very protective Dobberman Pinscher that was quietly staring him in the face, I realized that the type of training given to a dog is vital.

He failed to realize that the dog had been trained to attack anyone holding a gun - so, the Hitler-boy clone he had wanted to kill simply said 'POUNCE'!

And, oh boy, did it pounce in a very 'disarming' way!

    Thanks for the great insight.
