Do you remember when Internet was still new and chat rooms were free and available to every one? It still exsist but let's be honest, the free ones are mainly used by children and / or pedophils.
When the match making sites came to be known, people were skeptic about the whole idea of meeting people online, and having a successful relationship created by that meeting. When it did work out for a lot of people all of a sudden these web sites all became a buseniss. Now we all have to pay for people searching on the web. Of course it is the same with chat rooms, information research on people and such. It is just too good to be free.
However, there are thousands of people who just don't mind to pay for these services. Some of them are even suscribed to several different match making pages at ones.

I'll never forget  that on day I saw a woman writtin in the messege board that she's been up on these sites for years and that she found the same guy on different sites so she knew he was lieing about something. My first thought about that was simply a question. She is suscribed to several match making sites for years now, and still single? Maybe she should get up from behind the computer and invest all that time into REAL living experiences.
Of course, I should have kept my mouths shot ( or my fingers off of the keyboard) because she got offended by me. I didn't mean to hurt her feelings - I still do that thou. I just don't know when to keep my thoughts to myself.

For me, I like the idea of the possibility to meet Mr. Big online. But do I want to pay for the endless searching? Do I want to pay for the unsuccessful months and years too? No, thank you.

I know that there still are free match making sites. They mostly have such a havy number of users that the sites have all kinds of technical problems. Than you get a messege that if you are tired of these difficulties you can suscribe for the better version as gold or platine member the search for love will no longer be an ongoing headacke. Hmmm.

But what I hate the most is when you click on an add that says "free dating site", taht turns out to be about an hour of question answering, than a price list with your inforamtion already in the right boxes for your visa payment.  It happened to me today.

So please fellow bloggers, if you know of a free match making site, that is really free and really works, let us all know. I am not being cheap, am I? That makes me think - are the people on these sites all cheap, or just carefull? Hmmmm...

There are other ways meeting people. For example if you have a hobby of some kind , join a cub, participate in sports or  what ever. While travelling.

Yes, thank you for the advice. The only problem is that I am a single mom living ina foreign country with my son. I don't have any free time at all to do all the above. That actually creates a problem when I meet people online and want to go for a date as well. But that I can arrange some how if I really need to while a weekly, daily activity might be a bigger problem. I do go to the gym quiet often tho, and I do meet people there. But in this country only boys in their Twenties go work out.

I'm a fan of dating/matchmaker sites.  Well, I used to be.  I'm married now.  :-)

Yes, I'd say you're being a little cheap.  Go to match.com and give the free trial a shot.  In a world that includes the communication/information abilities afforded by the internet it's a little strange to artificially constrain your choices to whomever you might meet at the bowling alley.  :-)

I've heard people say good things about PlentyOfFish. It's 100% free.

I met my husband through Yahoo! Personals back when it was still completely free. I'd never pay for an online personals membership, but that's just me.

I know a couple of sites that are free and they aren't to bad.  itsjustcoffee.com is one that I've had a little bit of success on, but seems to be for people in larger cities.  Okcupid.com is free and it's a bit new to me, but doesn't seem so bad and is kind of fun.  Hope this has helped some.

Kelly - I am up on Jdate and Match.com as well. I pay for one month for both every six months when I get my child support from my ex. If I don't get lucky in a month, than I don't waist my son's money on this. That's why I'm looking for free sites. I pesonally think that only extremely lonely people would take money out of their budget for some thing like this, if they are anywhere close to my financial situation. So I still give it a chance, and it never worked for me.

Eilan - I did the whole registration process on POF but it never takes my password/ username. Than I tried to redo the whole thing but I've got the same result. It's a dissapointment

Ninjapirate - wow, now that's free and usefull info! thanks, I'll try them and I'll let you all know how it went :-)

Ed - yeah, I know, right? Especially in my case....

Sorry ZsuzsiO, I shouldn't have said that before I knew your financial constraints.

Oh I'm so glad it was useful!  I'd love to know how it turns out.  Hope you find what you're looking for.  My friend just showed me meetup.com which is more for activities, but you can meet new people I'm sure, I'm gonna try it myself.
