Do you do it? Have you done it before? Can you do it? Where have you done it, where would you prefer to do it.....?

Just curious, since seeing this article about Richard Gere having a court warrant on his head for kissing Indian girl, Silpah Shetty, three times on the cheek at a public function!

SO, WOULD YOU WILLINGLY GIVE OR RECEIVE A KISS IN PUBLIC?

By our standards, I agree it's silly, but in India, maybe it's not so silly, Ed. Every culture is different.

A simple kiss on the lips or the cheek are fine.  My husband and I do this to say hello or goodbye in public.  I've been out in public when others in our party were climbing all over each other, and frankly, it was embarrassing.  I'm not a prude but a little discretion is a good thing.

My ex-husband was NOT a fan of PDA. Boring, boring.
However, the love of my life was totally into it!
I can't even count the places over 6 years where we kissed publicly.
Just about everywhere I think. A few places that stick out in my mind--

On a chilly summer night in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. We kissed, (wait who am I kidding, we sucked face!!  heehee) beneath a natural waterfall that has been there forever called "The Bridal Veil Falls".  Another time on the exact stateline seperating CA from NV in Stateline, South Lake Tahoe on New Years when everyone comes out of the clubs, casinos, etc. with their drinks and at the stroke of midnight, throws their glasses into the street as part of the celebration.

I guess the best ones were where we would just be walking outside or in a shopping mall, and he would pull me around a corner, giving a long, wet french kiss with his hand on my ass!!  I love to shock people.

I would both give a kiss and receive a kiss in public.  I do think that if you plan to spend a long time kissing that perhaps something less public is best. (in consideration of those who are more chaste)

This thing with Gere shows just how intolerant the Indian people are of foreigners.  When people come from another culture, the host should be tolerant of differences.  It's not like he went on kissing rampage in public everywhere he went while in India.

The same narrow minded intolerance reared it's ugly head with Elizabeth Hurley when she traveled to India to have the traditional wedding ceremony as a show of respect to her husband's family.  Those jerks got all bent out of shape because there were a few details that were not perfect.  I'll bet that's the last time she goes out of her way to be respectful to the obviously ungrateful family.

It all boils down to over inflated ego.

SW: the Gere dilemma, kissing in public generally, or.....?
  • silverwhisper said on Apr 26, 2007....
the reaction to gere. i've known, and worked for, indians. i can only assume that wherever this occurred was a rural state within india--it's an awfully big nation.

MissMimi: a little lid over the steamier emotions in public would be welcome, right?

Kissing welcome and goodbye,  IMHO, is decent for a couple who choose to express their feelings that way - I think it sends a message of closeness and deep connection to onlookers.
  • Bronx said on Apr 26, 2007....
Holy smokes, Holly....you do enjoy shocking people, don't you - French kissing in a corner at the mall?

That's so crazy and wild, it's definitely unique ROMANTICALLY!

Obviously, he is the love of your life - good for you!
  • Bronx said on Apr 26, 2007....
U-I: yes, the longer clinches should be left for more secluded areas - even the boxing ref would not stand for a long clinch at close quarters in a fight!

As for India generally, I think the problem with PDA there stems from the fact that social strata in life and religion are so intertwined that they've fused inseparably, even in cosmopolitan Mumbai/Bombay!
  • Bronx said on Apr 26, 2007....
SW: oh....yes, it was a rural and poverty stricken area of India - coincidentally, the same Jaipur where Liz Hurley held her wedding recently!
  • silverwhisper said on Apr 26, 2007....
ah--see, now that explains things. i missed that it was jaipur.

Holly: would I be correct to suppose that the New Year's eve glass throwing was funded by extra charges for the drinks?
  • Holly-Go-Lightly said on Apr 26, 2007....

    bronx--you crack me up!!!

well what's life for if we don't live it to the max!  ya' think??

however, sadly he was the love of my life, but we haven't been together since the year 2000.

still looking for someone who likes that kind of attention...how fun it is to be an adult kissing in the corner like a couple of teenagers!!!

No, no extra charges (are you kidding-these casinos have the big $$$$ what do they care about $500.00 worth of glasses?) ha

I read this and I really dislike Dicky Gere so I was glad.  If you are in a country and do as much charity work as he does, he should know the customs.  When in Rome type of thing.   He appeared to be quite blatant about it.  Bad boy!
I have no problem with kissing in public if it is tasteful. I kind of expect to see some passionate kissing when a husband has to leave his wife to go to war or something like that.  So sometimes it is appropriate and sometimes not.
  • ssahmed said on Apr 27, 2007....
There is an old saying which goes something like

" When in Rome, be like the romans"

Now, Gere has been in and out of India long enough to know whats what.
Personally, me being a 21 year old from India don't think that it was such a big deal.
But, this guy was all over her and even Shilpa exclaimed that it was a bit too much.
Add to that the setting being rural India. So, there were quite a few things working against Mr. Gere.
What I would really like to know is, what was he trying to convey with his actions at a gathering meant to spread knowledge about AIDS??

A kiss on the cheek or the forehead is as far I can go in public.
  • mom said on Apr 27, 2007....
    I second that!
  • queenparanoia said on Apr 27, 2007....
really he can be arrested for that? i guess richard gere should respect and know the culture of a country first before doing anything like this.

and kissing in public? i'm not a big fan of pda. just holding hands would be fine and some whispered words like..."you know i'm so happy even just holding your hands.
  • genalonewolf said on Apr 27, 2007....
I love to kiss personally. If I feel like giving pickle a big kiss in public then I do so. No tounges or anything like that. That is tacky. A big wet smooch is ok in my book. Still a free country i think. People are right that it should be done in taste, but just on the cheek or forehead is like kissing your mom or grandmom.
  • Bronx said on Apr 27, 2007....
SW: Jaipur has developed quite a rep since Liz Hurley got there - wherever one celebrity goes, others follow suit. it seems!
  • Bronx said on Apr 27, 2007....
Holly: just caught the Lake Tahoe connection - yes, $500 in broken glasses would be chicken change to that establishment, especially on New Year's eve!

Well....good luck in your pursuit of happiness and love, okay?
  • Bronx said on Apr 27, 2007....
mom: I understand your feelings about Gere - there was a time I wished someone would really punch him out after seeing so many movies about him cuckolding other men, especially his colleagues in INTERNAL AFFAIRS - yes, I think that was the name of the movie!

Then, my heart softened towards him after seeing PRETTY WOMAN!

Yes, Servicemen and their families do deserve their share of PDA and people should understand their special circumstances, too, IMHO!

    ssahmed: WELCOME TO MY BLOG!

I agree with you, Gere should have known better!

Shilpa's excuse, and his, I suppose, about him re-enacting a scene in his latest film just doesn't jell or hold water!

IMHO, I think Gere was ensuring that Shilpah got headline attention again - I'm pretty sure when all's said and done, in the end, that the option of a fine would be a small price to pay for his shocking actions!
  • Bronx said on Apr 27, 2007....
    Queen: you're such a romantic!

Yes, I agree, holding hands speaks volumes -  almost as much as PDA in kissing!
  • Bronx said on Apr 27, 2007....
gena: Yes, those 'chaste days' are a bit far gone now in most places - a short and wet smack in public would certainly not elicit disgust in most places and settings!

And, yep, anything in public beyond a peck on the cheek(s) or forehead for Mom and Grandma would definitely be suspect!
  • Bronx said on Apr 27, 2007....
You're very welcome, Holly - any time at all!
  • pickersplock said on Apr 27, 2007....
You could do a lot worse than kiss in public!
  • mom said on Apr 27, 2007....
Bronx- for me it was the opposite.  I really like Gere at first but then I just went YUCK!  and I have been yuck ever since.
  • Bronx said on Apr 28, 2007....
PP: that's so true - there's so much that's worse or more attention grabbing happening out there.
  • Bronx said on Apr 28, 2007....
mom: hi, that's a very interesting twist - why 'yuck' later?
  • Lipgloss_and_Razorblades said on May 14, 2007....
I don't mind PDA, in fact, I like them because it means to me that the person is happy to show other people they care for me. I do think traditions and beliefs should be respected too; but a court warrant? For kissing? Perhaps I should introduce some associates of mine who definately disrespected the steps of the chapel near my school. There's a special 'clique' who have all given/received oral there. Publicly. Just thought I'd share that for the sake of perspective. Too far is too far... but a kiss is just a kiss...
  • Bronx said on May 16, 2007....
    Lip: hi.

I agree with you that a kiss is just a kiss; unfortunately, there are still some who believe that the mouth was meant for nothing other than eating food! Heehee.
