While I was sitting here, blogging and checking my email at the jazz cafe, I got hungry and ordered myself a mouth-watering feta and olive sandwich with fries.  When the plate came, I noticed that the rim was sprinkled with paprika powder, presumably for decoration.  It reminded me of those desserts I've often ordered, specifically for their chocolate content, only to be disappointed when the plate arrived and all my chocolate sauce was spread out on the plate in a cutesie design, where the only prayer I would have of tasting it would be to pick the plate up and lick it off.  Am I the only one who finds this trend disturbing?  If I ask for chocolate, I want it to be where I can get at it.  Chocolate serves many purposes in my life, but sitting there and looking pretty isn't one of them.

I say, put it where I can taste it!  Are you with me?

    honestly, the amount they would use to decorate a plate is perhaps not ideal for enjoying the item. i've seen some truly stunning platings in my time and i wish you had a pic of this.

    i dunno, this doesn't bother me--unless they were stupid enough to waste a really quality ingredient this way.

    ed:  We're talking chocolate here!  What could be a more "quality" ingredient than chocolate?  Oh, forget it... if you don't get chocolate, you don't get chocolate.  :)

    I am sitting on the fence on this issue.  I like the pretty designs, but I nearly cry if there is more chocolate decorating the plate than in the dessert.

    There have been cases where I'll request a "side of chocolate syrup" when they didn't have enough on my dessert.  I know.  shameless.

    I do find this distuurbing. I worked many years in a small cafe serving mostly truck drivers (yes Brennee, thinking of you and Jasper) and they like to eat. If I would do something like that I would get it back on my shirt. Food art design is fine but when it comes to eating it isn't a good thing at all.

    Kruu, I dont mind the decoration, but they must certainly put sime ON the actual pud too!  The way you feel about chocolate is the way I feel about cream - fresh chilled whipped cream (now dont go getting any ideas) - I hate it when they put the tinniest bit with the pud. . .I want LOTS and LOTS!!!! :-)))

    PS: I can just imagine you with one of those gigantic dessert plates - licking off the sides !! LOL

    LOL @ if you don't get chocolate, you don't get chocolate.  Even bad chocolate is still chocolate and therefore precious in my eyes.  Kruu, I feel your pain.

    kruu- realizing its best I stay out of this, I'll just say I do my best to keep as little chocolate as possible coming into the house. And that I've never ordered a chocolate dessert in my life.

    hey kruu... I absolutely agree with you on this one! not only as a lover of chocolate, but also as having worked in a momand pop resaurant owned by a holy woman whose objective is always to WOW the customer: and she does!

    when it is chocolate: she had a chef who teaches at a local college to come in and teach her some recipies and deserts: and she will decorate yeah, but : you get more than just the miinimal taste on the plate (licking the plate would be something we would encourage;; and probably do: to draw attention to the people who had the nerve to serve it, as to where they are lacking..

    when we made chocolate sundaes: we started them with an ounce of chocolate syrup in the bottom of the glass, then put in one scoop Ice cream, more syrup, and 2nd scoop ice cream, and topped with choc, crushed walnuts, 1 1/2 to 2 inches of whipped cream and a nice merricino cherry on top.  we put the glass on a pie plate: to catch any fall out. lol.

    or, dip a finger and write mene mene tekel upharsin on the table top/cloth...

    you will have to come to Thunder Bay and visit us at the Ruby Moon: cause she is going to put out tiny little $2.00 bursts (like chocolate covered strawberries etc) for high end customers.

    oh yeah, concerning a comment you made on an other post... and I had not replied... about the meaning of the name, and you asked if I was named after a castle in Quebec....? ... I had forgotten, but I did live in Montreal and there is the "Frontanac" hotel... which was probably a castle... and it very well could be that that is why that name came up... out of the subconscious when half asleep and in need in a pinch. lol :  )

    Kruu- I don't know how much chocolate had floated to the sides, but dammit you got to ask for a straw.  Tell the waiters that you didn't come there to frame it, you came there to eat it. Then write a note to the cook, "If  you EVER slop my chocolate again, I will slop your guts all over the kitchen"  then close it with a smile and a "Have a Nice Day!"

    I have a few thoughts on the subject at hand, but for the sake if civility I will limit my response to the following:

    I have never and shall never pay good money at a restaurant where the 'presentation' is more important than the food.  On the rare occasion I actually drag my bones out to eat the need I seek to have fullfilled is more related to appetite than asthetics.  When I want to see 'art' I go to a museum.

    I'm with you on this one!!!  My Husband wants to take me on a date tonight....if I can manage to leave the house.  I asked him if we HAD to go to one of those 'trendy' restaurants where the food looks like an art form!   Sadly, that's where he wants to go...I think I'll stay in!

    Thank you all for your sympathy... ed was starting to worry me there...thought I might be alone on this one.

    @uniquely:  There's no shame at all in asking to have your needs met :)

    @gena:  I totally agree.  There's a time and a place for everything.

    @polar:  So true.  I guess it's a little harder to decorate in miniscule quantitties of cream than of chocolate... I love the way you guys say pudding for dessert...

    @Mimi:  I feel your support, dear friend

    @beyond:  What's this I hear?  Someone who avoids chocolate?  Not a problem.  Just send it along my way!  :)

    @frontanack:  Tell you what... if I ever become a high end customer, I'll be sure to come to your restaurant in Thunder Bay...lol.  For now, I'll settle for Wawel.  Yep, Montreal is exactly where that castle is!

    @mom:  a straw!  That's a great idea.  Do you think they would take the hint?

    @rww:  I agree.  It's nice to have food that looks nice, but if it isn't backed up by flavor, then really... what's the point?

    @oldog:  now, now...control yourself  :)

    @princess:  Yeah, I'm kind of heading in that direction myself.. first Zayda's post about feeding Little Box, and now this!

    @skald   =)

    @daily: Don't think I wouldn't!  :)

Restaurants have been an important part of the European life style. You can view thousands of them at the street corners and along road sides. Many of you might have been the regular customers to some Restaurants....
