My granny couldn’t stop laughing last night when I mentioned that I don’t think there is a devil nor hell. But when she eventually did stop and the idea I planted in her mind started to grow, she curiously turned to me and said: “You know what, I think your right. But why do you think so in the first place?”

So before I begin I would like to apologize beforehand to any Soulcaster’s who follow the left hand path who might be offended by this.  This isn’t a personal attack on you or your religion and lifestyle,  just a thought I had one day when I had nothing better to think off.

I think some old lady made the Devil up one day, when her kids refused to eat their veggies. After a while the Devil got a face, some horns, a pitchfork and a home, Hell.

Yes, I think the terrifying tale of going to Hell, is just a horrific fairytale, that’s all. Look around you, don’t you think we are already in hell? I mean with  all the war, crime and violence going on in the world, I can’t imagine hell being the ultimate afterlife punishment. And now global warming is also contributing to the hellish atmosphere, come on, even my granny can’t deny it.

Another reason why I think that the Devil is Prince Charming’s evil twin is the fact that humans so easily blame everything on him instead of taking responsibility for their own actions. A guy walks into a shop a kills 3 people, but no, it wasn’t him, it was the Devil. Pluuueeeese!

Okay, I know this little statement of mine is going to ignite a ferocious debate and I would like to encourage it.  Tell me, do you think that  Satan’s for real?

Satan, or "Ha-Satan" in the Old Testament, simply means "adversity", or "adversary".

In Job, Satan stands as an accuser - a "devil's advocate", if you will, in God's Holy Court.

In the New Testament, Satan comes to tempt Jesus with worldly things - money, power, adulation.

Taken this way - Satan as Adversary, Satan as Accuser, Satan as Tempter, I'd say yes Satan does exist - not in the form of a person with horns and all that, but as a force that works its way in our lives.

When the choice is before us, do we choose worldly things over divine things?

When we feel morally self-righteous, what inevitably happens?

When bad things happen to us, do we cast away our faith, or do we cleave to it?

Satan's pitchfork is more like a fork in the road that lies ahead of us.

    Which path do we choose?
  • silverwhisper said on Apr 26, 2007....
apart from the obvious judeo-christian roots that color our notions of satan/lucifer/etc., i think that we are socialized to perceive an opposing force that tempts us with our weaknesses. that for some this opposing force is the adversary of the bible or something else makes perfect sense, as it attacks us in our most vulnerable areas, doesn't it?

The red bodied figure with horns, an arrowed tail and a pitchfork is most certainly the figment of the imagination.  Lucifer was an angel before his fall, the angel in charge of worship in Heaven.  Pride is what made him fall away from the glory of the Ancient of Days.  He is beautiful and is dressed in light, that is why he can so easily deceive.  This is my belief.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Apr 26, 2007....
I was raised in a conservative church that indeed believed in Satan.  I don't believe Satan is the red skinned guy with the pitchfork either.  I believe the Bible was written with a lot of stories that are not neccesarily actual events, but parables.

I believe Satan is an entity that has no shape or form.  I believe Hell is any place that you are or may go that causes you to act horribly or believe the very worst of every thing or person.

One last thought.  If you don't believe in Satan, then is it still possible to believe in his alter ego, God?  I have thoughts on that too.

    hi mouse!!

I'd like to say *curmudgeon*did a great job in explaining how Satan came to be.

As for myself, i was raised a Catholic, and anyone that ever went to Cathechism classes knows what I mean. Yes, Jesus was not only of God, but of Man, so he was a viable living human being. Lucifer, said to be the most beautiful angel ever became greedy and out of his desire for wordly things (power, over & above God,and the desire to overthrow the rule of God. So he was "sent down". Satan was very real in the way they explained it to us. Satan was an actual devil, and he dwelled in the hell below us, and if we weren't good boys and girls, we might have to go there someday and burn (Catholic nuns--supposed to be pious & good--huh, there were a few exceptions to the rule--the big breasted nazi-nuns dressed in those awful wool outfits, and never getting to have sex again in their WHOLE lives!! ) No wonder they put the fear of God into us!!  haha

I think uniquely brought up some things that I wholly believe in, and that is that Satan is not necessarily the guy  depicted in the horror flicks. However, he is an entity that can take ANY shape or form. This is part of his trickery, he is deceitful. That is why the Bible says he will come into power in our world in human form. It is said that all the people will love him, he will, in the beginning, gain people's acceptance through WORLDLY things. Prey on greed and lust etc.

He does not and will not ever have the power to overthrow the "all-powerful and living God". I'm not sure if I believe in hell as a fire and brimstone kind of place, but more like a deep and everlasting seperateness (sp?) from God's love, peace and acceptance, and once it's realized, eternity will be sad & hopeless now that you know what you've missed out on.

Besides, I believe in God, so there has to be a Satan, some kind of evil force. There is no good without evil (think of every single Superhero comic you've ever seen) and good always triumphs over evil. That is a Universal Truth.

    i  know-i tend to ramble

I agreed with so many on here about hell and satan.  Satan Lived in heaven and was cast down.  He was Lucifer, son of the morning. It is talked about in Revelations.
I believe that Satan controls much of this world.  He tempts us but it is us who has the power to deny him.  He is the father of lies, deceit, and chaos. I don't believe he is red skinned with forked tail and horns, I think that is an artists idea.  I don't believe hell is fire and brim stone, but the eternal sorrow for the things we have done in this life.
I blogged on this once a long time ago.  As a teenager I got into the occult,  I cast spells, and delved into some very bad stuff.  My experience taught me that there is a hell and that satan is real.
I was once told that the greatest lie he will ever get you to believe is that he doesn't exist.
  • moonriver said on Apr 26, 2007....

I don't believe in Satan with the red skin, horns and pitchfork either.  But I have always thought (and told many friends) that I believe Hell is here on earth.  By that I mean, anyone can make their own Hell by being a liar, a thief, in general a miserable and deceitful human being while here on earth.  I believe the Devil tempts us everyday and it is our choice whether to follow him or be a better person and take the lesser traveled road of goodness.

As the Bible says, everyone will see Heaven and in that moment, whether you get to stay or not, you will know the difference between this Hell on earth and Heaven.  I believe this journey on earth is the ultimate test of faith and everyday we have to fight off the evil spirits of Satan himself who is always trying to lead us astray.

    *hi mom*!!

just wanted to say, that statement about the biggest lie is TRUE!!

I have heard this many times over the years.

Maybe people should think of it like- "if you don't stand for something-

you'll fall for anything".  That's a good lesson I taught my kids.

Alright now your going to get me started on the belief thing.  lets see how this goes,  I don't mean harm to anyone with what I say,  you have your beliefs and I have mine.  So here we go.

I believe that satan is not true and therefore in rightfully doing so I don't believe that God is real also.  I believe that there is something more out there however, I don't think it is a person,  or as some say that he has 3 forms.

I don't believe in a heaven or a hell,  I believe that if your having a good day then your in heaven and if your having a bad day then you pretty much are in hell.  Or if you live in Arizona where I live then your always in Hell (LOL).  Anyways hope I didnt' offend anyone and that is how I feel about it.

  • mom said on Apr 30, 2007....

Holly- thanks, it was something that I heard a while back and it struck home, and had a certain ring of truth to it. :)  Glad I am not a loner here

    Sean- now you behave

Blast- I was thinking it was the hildebeast. :)

Cyphonik- you didn't offend me, the discussions are open for people whether you agree or don't agree.  Respecting others opinions and beliefs is what keeps it sane.  I Lived in Arizone for 7 months and other than being horribly hot during the summer, I actually liked it.

  • Susmaryosep said on Apr 30, 2007....
    cyphonik,
That something is God, but what he is, is beyond human "understanding". The Taosist have Gods that behave like humans, only they are immortal, the Buddhists believe in reincarnation, but that is complex, the Religions of the book believe in Heaven, where alternatively, they sing till Eternity, or have 72 virgins, who will become non virgins after some time, and then live till Eternity......... many many more 'perceptions', all not explaining God.
  • mousenphonic said on Apr 30, 2007....

Thanks for the great response guys, and an even bigger thanks for keeping this debate clean and civilized. I had some problems logging onto SC over the weekend so by now I was worried sick that this post could have triggered a religious world war :D Glad it didn't.

curmudgeon, ed, gena, polar (great discription), uniquely, holly (your welcome to ramble here anytime), meshalinia (thanks for the links), mom (sorry to hear about your bad experiences concerning the occult), moon (lol, as always), susmaryosep (I must agree with this), glamour, sean, blast, cyphonik (hi! great to see you again, hows the married life?), hope that's everyone, thanks for popping in and giving your thoughts on this matter.

    Ciao for now,

This is the copy of an email I sent regarding the existence of Satan.

    Paul,

I read your article The Implausibility of Satan. Your logic is based on a false premise that is that there might be an unseen, all-loving, all wise and intelligent, all-powerful entity who we call God. Let me suggest an argument for you to consider Paul. Imagine a place we call for convenience Elsewhere. At a past time, the universe did not exist but Elsewhere did. Elsewhere is not like our physical universe in any way at all. And we do not have the ability to begin to comprehend what it is like. An entity we shall for convenience call Satan designed and fabricated a place for his/its amusement. He designed that place (the universe) and put his theatre/stage the planet earth and everything on it within it. He is in TOTAL control of the earth and all that happens on it. He/it shapes its history and is responsible for EVERYTHING that happens on it. Everything the people on the planet think, believe and do is controlled by him/it. He/it is responsible for the false notion of a benevolent, perfect, all loving entity called God (who does not exist).

You can see immediately that if this is true your argument has no validity at all. Which brings us to the question what is true and what is real?

I do hope this makes you think Paul. And would hope that you might consider reading my thoughts on these matters at

    http://thetruth-whatisreal.blogspot.com/2007/04/what-is-realopen-your-eyes.html

    http://intelligencewhohasit.blogspot.com/

Of course as he/it has perfect control over everything I can only write this because he/it wants me to.

Satan, i would compare to the evil side of a humans deeds, from the beginning of Adam and eve, we are conceived in sin and born into corruptions, we, as human, share a part of every thing that is happen on this earth and the way we share it is throught "blame" we like to make other the blame for our misfortune in life be it whatever, there is no godlyness in your thoughts when you do evil, godlyness is the good deeds that are done toward one's fellowman. Every one on earth possessive the seeds of good and evil, your choice.

Okay, I can buy into your theory.  I often joked about how our lives can't be real ... maybe we are just characters on television being controlled by aliens!
  • Cyphonik said on Nov 23, 2007....

You say that something that I believe in is God,  However, maybe it is like the people of the from the earlier days who believed in Newtons law and the history of the enlightenment,  I mean you can't say for sure if there is or isn't a God.  I mean no one here has ever seen God.  You hear it all the time, I have seen God and he is speaking to me.  I don't believe that I believe that somethings in life happen they way they do because that is what it is Life.   I mean you don't pray to some God and the next day you have everything you wanted or asked for.  Therefore I just believe that you pray for something and you shape your life and make change for that thing to happen.  After it does you say oh thank you God for letting me do this when all along it was you in the first place that made change to your human nature to allow it to happen.

You always hear the story from a pasture or whatever, I was down on my face and could veryly eat but God saw me through it and made it happen.  Can you prove it?  Did God tell you hey walk down this street and there will be money at the end of the road for you.   No the human made change because he was tired of living the way he was.  Therefore no one knows if God or Satan exist.   I mean surely if they do God might be in Human image however, Satan surely isn't in the form of having Horns and everything.  I suppose it just matters how you look at it.  Maybe when I say I think there is something more out there maybe I"m referring to Alien lifeforms or even Science.  Who knows.
