Why is it that neither Britain or the USA have had or are likely to have a black prime minister/President in the foreseeable future????

We are supposed to have equality in both these countries..? We have black doctors, black bus drivers, black policemen, so why is it we don't have black prime ministers/presidents?

Even South Africa has had a black leader??? Both the USA and Britain showed their disgust at apartheid and held out the hand of friendship to Nelson Mandella, throwing lavish celebrations for this historical moment when a black person became leader. We as countries like to put on such a front of political correctness with regard to racism and being seen to be anti-racist yet we are probably further away now from voting our first black leader into power than we were 25 years ago.

I think it is so easy to get lulled into a false sense of security with regard to the whole Racism issue. Because we see and hear our political leaders condemning racism, because laws have been passed to protect black people, because we all like to believe we are stamping racism out it's easy to miss the one very obvious indication that these 2 "great" countries still have a long, long way to go before they can truly set out on the road to being able to state that black and white people are treated equally.

I am aware of the "5-black presidents" 1) Thomas Jefferson 2) Andrew Jackson 3) Abraham Lincoln 4) Warren G. Hardin and 5) Eisenhower (evidence inconclusive). These 5 presidents apparently had some African ancestry although there dosn't appear to be much mention of this fact in articles relating to their presidencies.

elinor1963 Honey you are showing a great deal of ignorance about American culture. African Americans have earned a place at the table of American politics through blood, sweat and the tears of generations of sacrificing mothers and fathers. No other minority group in this nation has earned the right to participate with as much honor or faith as the African American. There will be an African American President and he/she will have the full support of the American people. Of that there is no doubt.

My knowledge of your culture may not be great, my interest in Racism globally is however very keen having to deal with it on a very personal level. It is refreshing to read such a positive affirmation from yourself regarding the situation but can you speak so confidently about all your fellow Americans? I totally agree that African Americans have earned a place at the White house as have "black british" peoples earned a place in the House of Commons it still remains a fact that as yet we havent had a black Prime Minister.

Basically in politics its all about voting systems. I'm not too sure myself about how your political system works. I tried to follow the last election round but it is so long and drawn out that I gave up and until the end only to see that Bush got in again. I was flabbergasted the dude is so stupid and insulated. However, I digress. Elections are based on votes, so therefore if all African Americans voted then there would be a good chance of getting an African American President. But have you considered that the poorest of the poor in America may just be African American. They may not have access to any media communications. Also, they may just be struggling to live day by day. Why therefore should they vote? Are they able to analyse the fact that an improvement in their living conditions could be dependant upon their vote? Do they care? Are they in a mindset that no matter who rules oblivious or race, colour or creed their lives will not alter one little bit? In New Zealand last year the Maori Party was formed. Do all Maoris vote for them. Not yet. Why? Many Maori are at the bottom of the socio economic ladder here in NZ. They don't know and don't care who the politicians are, It's a striggle for them to get through every day, financially, emotionally and physically. Their anxieties related to these emotions fill their day. Most have TVs but in an effort to lighten up their day probably watch American movies or other light hearted programmes, in an effort to block out the daily grind. Hopefully, this will change. But as the majority of the population is non-Maori including the politicians, it's gonna take a long time in paradise.

Thanks for your comments - you've introduced some interesting ideas- However, I am not American, I am British.............and whilst we do have poverty here in Britain the majority of black British people here do not fall into the destitute/poorer classes, we do have some black politicians unfortunately they seem to reach to a certain level in politics then progress no further- definitely not as far as Prime Minister level any way. Personally I feel this country is going backwards where race-relations are involved? Speaking from personal experience I believe racism here is on the increase and political parties like the BNP, and the National Front are increasing in number at an alarming rate. For every new, up and coming black politician it seems like there is at least 10 BNP or NF new members. Also now with our education system reverting back to being only for the more priviliged amongst us- at Uni-level, there will be even fewer black politicians coming up in the future?

I think all of the problems in the United States would be solved if we elected a black women president. Wouldn't that be the ulitmate proof of equality? Would that not put trust back in the people and give people back the notion that anyone can be president, and it dosn't matter where you come from, but rather the character inside you? I am voting black female all the way until it happens.

As a casual observer of American politics, I think there are two reasons America has not had a black president. 1) No black person intelligent enough to win will run because they are also intelligent enough to know that various nut jobs will try on every occasion to assassinate them. What psycho would not want to be the one who offed the first black president. 2) Rap music. I would never vote for a black person as long is rap music is around because having a black president might help to prolong the existence of rap. What has it been, 20 years now? Let us move on. (Just kidding ... kind of.)

why not.. i believe it's not the color of the person, or ethnicity that's important. It's what's in the heart of the candidate. Whether it be american, british, filipino (that's what I am), japanese or whathaveyou's president/prime minister/leader we will be voting for. I mean white men have ruled countries that have both risen and fallen. We had female leaders who brought their countries to the attention of the world. so what's the matter if they are black? white? or even pink? to be it doesn't matter as long as that person first and foremost has the capability and the heart to run a country. Is he wise? intelligence without common sense and conscience is a great disaster waiting to happen. Is he compassionate and just? And lastly, how many heads/toes did he step on and how many people did he use to get to his place and earn the privelege to run as a president of a country. Cause if he stepped on too many heads/toes and used to many people then payback for all those people will be high and his presidency will of course be utilized to pay those people back

Would I vote for a "Black President" you ask?
My answer is: "YES" in a flash. I live in South Africa and we are probably better off economically than we were under a white government. Our entire parliament is virtually black!
A very small persentage of whites are not happy with our black president, but I say again, only a small persentage. What does this tell you?
    Viva BLACK!!!

Whenever I come across these incidents in American history, I have continued to wonder if they were just mere coincidence or...
A hate crime? Or just a white girl getting raped?...

Or at least stupid accusations of racism.

...

Only blacks are unethical? Can that be?

...
What would you do if you're the only Jewish or Muslim woman among the Nazis at Kassel University, Germany?...
