I skipped out on work Wednesday afternoon to see Pirates 2 and was sorely disappointed from the get go. The premise of the film is that Jack Sparrow(Johnny Depp) sold his soul to Davey Jones in an effort to raise his beloved ship, The Black Pearl, from the depths of the ocean thirteen years earlier. Jones has marked Sparrow to be hunted by the Kracken, a mythological beast of the sea, via a ridiculous appearance by Stellan Skarsgard as Bootstrap Bill Turner, the estranged father of William Turner(Orlando Bloom), who has joined Jones’ crew and eventually sparks an unnecessary father-son subplot. The eye-catching setting and Depp’s stellar performance in the first Pirates did enough to disguise the ridiculous plot, but the absurdity of the sequel could not be camouflaged. Davey Jones’ squid-like appearance along with his monster-filled crew was too much even for Depp to save from crashing to the rocks below. The only bright spots were shots of Keira Knightley, in which she looked exceptionally stunning even when posing as a man, and a special surprise appearance by Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbosa. The “cliff-hanger” ending sent me over the edge, invoking my bitter hatred for this cringe-inducing sequel to a wildly entertaining original. It may not have been as bad as that last sentence would suggest, but trust me, save some money and anguish and rent the original instead. M. Rating: One Star

Your assessment sounds strangely familiar, but we loved it. Of course, as usual, I spent most of the time thinking how the heck did they do that? I was pleasantly surprised that they came up with any plot, good or bad. Like you, I thought the first one wrapped things up pretty tight, but remember, it is just entertainment. Very expensive entertainment. I am sure we will go see the third one and the fourth one and the ...

It's a trilogy. They've already filmed the third movie while shooting the second.

Yes, it's a trilogy. Originally, the didn't intend for it to be a trilogy, but they realized that there were too much that needed to happen to fit in just a second movie. So, while filming the second, they started filming the third. They are wrapping up the third. They had to wait until Keith Richards finished his tour with the Rolling Stones to film parts of the third.

There is a definete difference betwee a 'good' movie and an 'entertaining' movie. IMO, entertaining movies become block busters, 'good' movies don't have to rely upon eye candy and visual effects to tell the story.

Very true, but I didn't feel this movie was even good enough for me to overlook its flaws and be entertained. I'll still see the third one, though I'll be much more skeptical going in that I was this time around. To quote my friend who went with me, "The best thing about the movie was that I showed up four minutes late."
