I skipped out on work Wednesday afternoon to see Pirates 2 and was sorely disappointed from the get go. The premise of the film is that Jack Sparrow(Johnny Depp) sold his soul to Davey Jones in an effort to raise his beloved ship,
The Black Pearl, from the depths of the ocean thirteen years earlier.
Jones has marked Sparrow to be hunted by the Kracken, a mythological beast
of the sea, via a ridiculous appearance by Stellan Skarsgard as Bootstrap Bill
Turner, the estranged father of William Turner(Orlando Bloom), who has
joined Jones’ crew and eventually sparks an unnecessary father-son subplot.
The eye-catching setting and Depp’s stellar performance in the first Pirates
did enough to disguise the ridiculous plot, but the absurdity of the sequel
could not be camouflaged.
Davey Jones’ squid-like appearance along with his monster-filled crew was
too much even for Depp to save from crashing to the rocks below.
The only bright spots were shots of Keira Knightley, in which she looked exceptionally stunning even when posing as a man, and a special surprise appearance by Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbosa.
The “cliff-hanger” ending sent me over the edge, invoking my bitter hatred for
this cringe-inducing sequel to a wildly entertaining original.
It may not have been as bad as that last sentence would suggest, but trust
me, save some money and anguish and rent the original instead.
