I put that warning on this post, because I’ve noticed that Beatles fans tend to be rather of the “all or nothing” variety.  Now, don’t get me wrong.  I like the Beatles.  I like them a lot.  In fact, I think that they were marvelous songwriters.  Some of the best.

But… here’s the thing.  I think that other artists have often done a better job of recording Beatles songs than the Beatles did themselves.  I mean, let’s face it.  They weren’t fantastic vocalists, and the range of emotion present in most of their music is next to nil, and other vocalists have done more justice to the music.  The same could be said of Bob Dylan, but we won’t go there for now.

Some of the best covers of Beatles songs have come off the soundtrack to the 1979 movie, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, starring Peter Frampton and the Bee Gees along with an all-star cast.

Some of my favorites from that album are the ones in which the cover singers transformed what, to me, was a rather humdrum rendition of a song with great lyrics, and transformed it into something that had life.  Take, for example, Aerosmith’s version of Come Together.  Sexy, powerful… and if you can get a clip of the lead singer performing it from the movie, ladies… I swear that hottie will make you swoon more than John, Paul, George and Ringo combined.  And the Beatles version sounds tinny in comparison.

Then, there’s Diane Steinberg’s sultry and mesmerizing version of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.  The way the words linger so tenuously on her tongue before dropping off… she pulls you right into that acid trip.  Did you ever get that feeling listening to the Beatles?

And Sandy Farina steals the show with her full-voiced, soulful renditions of Here Comes the Sun, and Strawberry Fields.  The quality of her voice, and her interpretation of the song as a whole, make me yearn for a sunny strawberry field to lie in with my lover.

Let us not forget Peter Frampton and his heart-wrenching Long and Winding Road as he trails after his girlfriend’s (Strawberry Fields) coffin.  Still brings tears to my eyes.  Never got that from the Beatles.

Even the Bee Gees managed to put more into Nowhere Man and some of the other songs than the original Beatles versions.  And though I never heard the Beatles versions of the following songs, there were some other great songs that came out of this movie:

Earth, Wind and Fire:  Got to Get You Back in My Life

Alice Cooper:  Because the World is Round

Billy Preston:  Get Back

And an honorable mention goes to Steve Martin for his hilarious interpretation of Bang Bang Maxwell’s Silver Hammer.

I do have to make one concession.  Although I never heard the Beatles sing Fixing a Hole Where the Rain Comes In, I’m sure they did a better job than George Burns.  He’s not exactly known for his singing talents.

So, have I alienated all of you?  Do I have any friends left at soulcast?  Or are there some of you who have been thinking the same thing but were afraid to speak out?  Well, I’m here to say, you don’t need to be afraid anymore.  You are not alone.  Feel free to come out and show your face.  Can you add any more covers to my list that you like better than the Beatles originals?

kruu- God, I can't believe you did this post. I had a long discussion with my wife on this subject a short time ago. I was telling her what great songwriters they were, but possessed little other redeeming qualities as singers, musicians, or performers. That so many others did all of this so much better.

She looked at me with a face wrenched in disgust.

I will say that we saw Paul McCartney in concert and he did much better in the performing area in his later years than when they were together.

    Kudos for you from me.

I will say that the Beatles as a group are better than each of them as solo artists. I also admit that a huge part of the reason I love them so much is because their music is part of the fabric of my childhood and adolescence.
  • kruuyai said on Apr 24, 2007....
Mimi...Mimi, my girl.  Stop that pouting!  I said I liked the Beatles.  A lot.  I just think that they were much better songwriters than singers, and that a lot of other singers have covered their songs better than the original.  Hey... how do you rate getting weekly trout smacks?  I don't think I've ever gotten even one.  I'm a trout-smack virgin!

My favorite band just happens to be The Beatles, just growing up listening to them brings back great times for me. They were musical geniuses. What they accomplished in only the short time they were together, not to mention the revolution the brought about with there music.

But I understand where your coming from, if you like there music but dont like there voices listen to I AM SAM soundtrack. All beatles songs, but fone by other artists. Its really a great cd. Although for me The Beatles do it better. These songs are really well done. definitely check it out

As for Bob Dylan, maybe his voice isnt so great, but theres a feeling to it. I <3 Bob Dylan
  • ShudderBug said on Apr 24, 2007....
I agree, the Beatles were okay but not great by any means. Most of their songs sound teh same and are quite stupid. I think they gained popularity because at the time we were hungry for something different, and they were that.

Some of their songs were powerfully written but not composed until they were copied years later. Thank goodness.

Personally, I think the Monkies had more talent, and, as long as we discussing talent ... Bruce Springsteen sucks harder than Willie Nelson, and under major suck is Bob Dylan. Just my opinion.

Elvis I loved too and in my ears he´s still good. ♥♥♥

I like Deep Purple's take on Help - slow and sad with a heavy guitar lead to the organ solo. And Ritchie Blackmore makes We Can Work It Out much more interesting with his guitar work.

Aerosmith did a great job of I'm Down and I do like their version of Come Together though whether I like it better than the original, I am not sure.

The Beatles kicked ass with Helter Skelter though later Motley Crue did a good version of it.

Recently I listened to Whitesnake's version of Day Tripper and it is quite different from the original. I like both versions.

If the Beatles didn't give us the best in music they sure gave other musicians a lot of good material to work with.

Just to clarify -- I like the Beatles a lot. I think they were a great band and their influence on Rock 'n Roll can't really be overstated.

However I do think in some ways they are overrated compared to some of the bands that have come since then. They're still great, it's just that a lot of other bands are great as well and I think I can enjoy both the original Beatles' performances as well as bands that cover their songs. And sometimes I like the covers better.

I've certainly never thought they were bad, and they will always have an important place in Rock music history.

What a bunch of homos ... OK, I understand what you are saying. I think a lot
of the emotions we diehards have is the fact that we were there for the debut
of the songs by the Beatles. After about the first year or so of Beatlemania, it
seemed like we all just sat around and waited for the next Beatle song to come
out, which inspired other groups to put out their own new songs. If you had
stood in front of that big, bubbly, colorful jukebox at the local diner and heard
Strawberry Fields or Tax Man coming through those big, glorious speakers for
the first time, I think you would feel the way I do. When I hear a Beatle's song
today, that is what I really hear. Being a musician, I appreciate the job others
do on any song, especially Bob Dylan's stuff. I really did not care much for him
until I learned that he wrote All Along the Watchtower, which Hindrex did to
perfection. Plus, I was in a band that played probably 25 to 50 percent Beatles
music so we definitely waited with anticipation for the next song or album. I
dare say their music will be treated hundreds of years from now as we treat
Mozart and Bach today. I bet the local symphony is playing their music a heck
of a lot better than they ever did.

  • blastfromthepast said on Apr 24, 2007....
I liked their older stuff, before they got all fucked up on drugs.  Then their music had no appeal for me.  As for other artists performing the Beatles' hits, some do a better job and others stink.  One thing is for sure, it beats the Hell out of Rap Crap!

Ulimately it's a useless but fun topic, this musical taste stuff.  I don't deny Springsteen's place but he never did much for me, and I don't expect people to like the stuff I like.  Music is just way too personal.
  • rightwingwizard said on Apr 25, 2007....
I wasn't a Beatles fan in their early years, I thought is was simply horrible.  But as they matured as musicians they appealed to me.  My favorite song from their repertoire was 'Let it Be'   While they were largely responsible for the transition into what most of us older folks think of when we think 'rock', they paled in comparison to many of their contemporaties.  The 'Doors' come to mind imediately.

moonriver confucius admit being die-hard beatles fan since hard day's night, but wise enough to appreciate covers too. me not very keen though on comparisons re singing style. even songs recorded by beatles in various times have differing styles and qualities, cf. the bootleg album.

what i know is, steve tyler of aerosmith not present when our entire high school class do cool monkey dance while singing come together. tinny beatle voices part of song's impact. ringo rhythms unparalleled on this track.

and what i know is, peter frampton of the frumpy hair not present when entire high school class pair off into sweet hugging couples, while loners like me wear vietnam-war jackets and practice guitar riffs alone in dark corners, as paul's plaintive "don't leave me waiting here..." waft through dance floor. frampton version doesn't evoke same feelings, same outpouring of recollections.

if we factor in the cultural, experiential context of what those songs meant to us, then, no contest. no point of comparison.

  • rightwingwizard said on Apr 26, 2007....
I think that most of us who were around at the time and have memories related to certain songs would prefer the original.  Like I said before however, with regard to their early period it matters little.  I don't see a lot of people doing covers or remakes (two different animals) of 'She Loves Me' or 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand' , the two songs they played on the Ed Sullivan Show in their American debut.

If one is an Aerosmith fan, their cover might trip the light fantastic.  Same would be true of anyone else who has ever 'covered' someone elses song.   The main thing about the Beatles is that their music is still alive and well.  Much of it is relevant to our present times.   It is loved as much by this generation as it was in ours (I speak to those of us who are older than dirt yet still young at heart.  As we will be to the end)

With regard to 'Come Together'  having listened to them one after the other, I must say that I prefer the original voices.  Just me!  The again I never really got into Aerosmith.

I move quickly from the Beatles on to the Moody Blues, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Steppenwolf, Black Sabbath, Santana ect.  By then the Doors were no more and as mentioned before I thought in terms of raw talent (with regard to musicality as opposed to composition) Morrison and the gang had it in spades over the Beatles or the Stones.

Just me, an old fart with selective memory.

rww:  I do like the Doors.  I think there was just so much great music in those two decades, that it's impossible to say who was the best.  And there were so many one-hit wonders... but that's the subject of another blog. :)

I know I said I was going to be away for a couple of weeks but this subject is too irresistible.

In defence of the Monkeys, I once saw an episode where they performed live. Mickey Dolenz started by saying that many people claimed the Monkeys couldn't play their own instruments so this concert was going to destroy that myth. And so they played.

In the eighties (or late nineties) three of the members regrouped to do a new album called Pool It! It seemed from the live footage that they can play.

I knew a guy once who was extremely angered when someone said the Aerosmith version of Come Together was better than the original. He refused to speak to his co-workers unless it was work related for days.

    Okay, bye again!
