I think its true when I say that a person who has not clearly definied his/her purpose will not ever be able to reach a stage of contentment. The temporary high of happiness will result in a stretched low of depression. The transitory extremes of bliss and misery will begin to make one look deep down into their heart and soul. It will make one question why you were born, where you fundamentally came from, whether life is limited to studying hard at school, getting a high-paying/satisfying job, falling in love and raising successful children and then pursuing an area of passion till the day you die, and other such soul-searching questions.
Most people will die never knowing what their true purpose was. In their youth, it will be to look good, party, work hard at school, get to an ivyleague college, make life-long friends, etc, etc, etc. In their 30's, it will be to get married, raise children, work at a job which provides security and try to do things which make one happy. In their 50's, it may be to get your children married off, trying to get out of a struggling job which should never have been pursued in the first place, trying to maintain a marriage and re-discovering old and new interesting things which can be done with time. In their 70's, it will be meeting your children, talking/laughing/meeting their children aka your grandchildren, trying to spend time doing little things which matter, recieving a smile or an act of kindness from a stranger. In their 90's, they will be dead or thankful that they worked out and ate right back in the day.
So is this what life is- constantly changing purposes as time goes by? Wouldn't life be so much more fruitful if one was given the purpose and mission of life the day they were born. They would work hard day and night in pursuing it. The faith in it would make them fearless and determined to do anything at all, because they knew they had something greater then themselves waiting for them after they died. Nothing could shake them. Nothing at all. But its tough this life- someone will constantly invite you to do things which your faith clearly defines as wrong, someone will hate you without even knowing your true personality, someone will insult you just because they needed someone to critiscize. But you take their comments like a ball- it hits, may have an impact for a few moments but it bounces right back off. Theres a saying that a believer should be like the tree which when hit by a storm simply sheds its fruits. This is the case of a believer.
So, think deep and hard and tell me what your purpose of life is- is it something that will change in 20 years or has it been the same from the day you born till the day you will die?

light- I don't believe in a natural purpose as a gift or a given. I believe we acquired an existence and we are to do the best we can with it. I do the best I can with family, friends, and those around me. We should simply do the best we can for all. This gives us purpose.

Our purpose is to live, to get to that next moment. I've known old people
who were not wise and wise people who were not old.

It's been my experience that when I do good things, mostly good things
come of it and the other way around.

So, I try to do good things as I move through the moments. Shit happens,
people die and people get sick. We mostly have our time in the sunshine
    and in the shade too.

My purpose changes with the moment, it's a moving thing. I don't pay allot
of attention to it. It's there, I know it, I try to make sure happiness is a big
part of my purpose here........thank you light..... good post

A major ingredient of success is worthy goals and ideals. Perhaps your deepest subconscious drive, according to Dr. Viktor E. Frankl, author of Man’s Search for Meaning, is the need for meaning and purpose in life....
