In a post, silverwhisper asked if you would like to have immortality, which was pertaining to this life.

In her series Eternal Questions, zayda asked if you believe in an afterlife.

My question is would you really want it?

I've always told people I certainly hope there is an afterlife and I believe part of this is fear, the fear of being completely annihilated. But then the question arises, would I want to live for an eternity? I would not expect the afterlife to be total happiness and perfection.

For instance, people who have had an NDE (near death experience) do not at all always come back to tell of perfection. Those who believe in reincarnation would be looking at returning to a physical body in a near endless fashion.

I cannot believe an afterlife would be gold streets, great food, spending forever with the ones we love. And would it be just plain boring after a "while?"

I do believe the cosmos to be pure consciousness in an eternal moment. But I have reservations about living forever. Perhaps that is another fear, the fear of it being too much like this one.

Would you want to live forever in an afterlife? Or come back repeatedly to this life?

honestly, if an afterlife conforms meaningfully to our understanding as some reflection of our karmic behavior, then no, i don't want one because i've done things of which i am not proud--like many, i imagine.

i do want it....the forever in the afterlife thing....whatever it may be.

in our human form, we get bored.  but i have to believe in our perfect form, there is no boredom...it does not exist.

    so yeah, i want that

  • beyondtheveil said on Apr 23, 2007....
Ed- In many of the beliefs I've read and heard in discussions, what you describe is what afterlife is about in one way or another. It usually involves that series of returns to this life- not a pleasant thought. Especially when there are no memories of previous lives.

secret- Whatever it may be? You may be right about the "perfect" part, but that part I can't visualize. So many beliefs say otherwise and that concerns me. But I don't want to die forever, either.

Right now I have to go and get my teeth cleaned. I sure hope we don't have
to do that in an afterlife.

Yes, I have little doubt we are preparing here for something there. Don't
    know what it is Beyond.

I think holding a new born babe and the hand of one who has just left the
ravages of the body that has carried them through life are the two times we
are closest to heaven or an afterlife we experience while we are visiting here.
    Thanks Beyond, great post.

To be perfectly honest, whether there's a heaven or hell or reincarnation or whatever I really don't know what I believe at this point.

And as to whether I want there to be an afterlife I guess it's not an important question to me.

What matters to me most is how I live THIS life, here in this moment. I'm only here for a short time and then I'm off to wherever or nowhere - either way I'm off.

I need to get as much out of this life as I can.

I feel a blog coming on...

Yes I believe in an afterlife, the one my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ talks about in the New Testament.
And most certainly I want it.
  • WindRider said on Apr 23, 2007....
What do i want... afterlife or immortality?

    Definitely afterlife.

It is my contention that "Hell" as defined by the christians is not an otherworldly dimension, that it in fact exists... right here. This is the hell that we are so afraid of... why would I want to be immortal for that?

Whereas the afterlife is where we are when we are NOT here. Works for me.

mobil- Please don't tell me there is dental work on the other side. That alone could make me stick arround longer. Hope you had a good vacation.

curmudgeon- I've run into many with your outlook and I must say it is a quite reasonable one to have. Do your best here and come what may.

muckpar- I'm one of those that has to have a solid foundation to stand on and haven't found it yet. But I'll never stop trying.

windrider- I not only believe that hell is not another dimension, but that it doesn't exist at all unless we make it so. If hell is here, I wonder what I did to deserve this.

truth- You are welcome anytime- I thought you might have something to say here.

msstar39- I was raised in two protestant denominations but never able to latch onto that faith you have. Perhaps I demand to understand more than will ever be available. Thanks for dropping by.

I wouldn't want immortality, because life in this old body gets pretty constricting and painful at times, and even at this point, I question how much longer I want to keep going, but I do want to believe in an afterlife... mainly, because I can't even conceive of my own non-existence.  I don't think it gets boring, because, if we're re-incarnated, we don't generally remember our previous lives, and even if we did, we're given a clean slate to start completely over, a new set of circumstances, and most likely, a new species with completely new challenges.  I'm not sure if the consciousness continues, or if our energy gets split up and get reintegrated into a million new beings along with bits of the consciousness of other sentient beings.  If I had my druthers, I'd vote for a continuation of consciousness, not so much for myself, but because I'd like to believe that my loved ones who have gone before me still have a consciousness intact, and yes.. I want that.
  • beyondtheveil said on Apr 24, 2007....
kruu- I'm with you on the consciousness. But I don't necessarily believe it would be a separate or our consciousness. I believe it would be an assimilation into the cosmic consciousness. When you mentioned "a new species", did you mean a different species on earth, or a thinking species on another world? I've thought about being reincarnated to an alien species and this intrigues me.

muckpar- May I say that I hope you are right in the truthfulness of Christ.

beyond:  Well, I had in mind, a different species on earth, but I don't suppose it really matters.  It's hard to believe this is the only planet in the universe that has life  on it, and if you believe that, then I don't see any reason why all of our lives would have to be on the same planet any more than in the same counrtry, town, etx.
  • truthsayer said on Apr 26, 2007....

Oh yes beyondtheveil...I want it all, for there is sooo much more.   I have glimpses and glimmers here, compared to what I will have after my transformation, or more accurately, my transaction?!

You might be interested to know that I have seen heaven.  I have been caught up more than once.  When He returns for His own, and when it is time for the millenial rule of Jesus on earth, there will still be much work to do.  It will, of course be a labor of love, like some of us experience now, but more...so much more.  The rest I would not share here, but only with other believers, that I was told to share it, and only if I was told to share it.  Most of it cannot be put into words that could contain the beauty and the glory of His presence and benevolent rule.  But suffice to say this, as a believer in Jesus Christ, for the first time in my life, I had no questions, none of the painful searching, or birth pangs that we feel here...I feel complete in Him, and my dearest friend beyondtheveil, there is no more 'separation'.  He said that you would know what I mean; do you?

truth- I honestly believe I have something of a concept or feeling of what you mean by no more "separation".
  • truthsayer said on May 22, 2007....
I am so glad, because it is so hard to explain here.   We perceive things as separate and solid; but you and I know that they are not.  We do not end at our skins, and everything matters.  Can you imagine having no more questions because you are now reconciled to him?  One with him and with that, comes...oh my, it is almost too much for me to say.  I want you to know that he has just today, given me revelation about what he means by the word, "separation"...once again beyond, you have provided confirmation of something from the Lord.  I hope you know how special that is.

    Your forever-whether-we-ever-meet-here-or-not-friend.

See you on the other side man.  I am certain of it now.

I do believe in an afterlife, largely because I find the near death experience reports to be credible.

Yes, I do want it.  I don't consider it an afterlife, actually.  I consider it my real life.  I think of the present one as the school of hard knocks, largely illusion.  I think our real home is there, not here.

I find it frustrating that I don't have more information about what it is like there and who I am there.  I'm impatient to find out, and I wish I didn't have to wait until I die in order to find out.

I'm not worried about being stuck with a boring eternity.  I don't think it will be an issue.

I think that I am not the person I see in the mirror.  That is just the spacesuit I have to wear here, just the car I have to drive here.  I don't think that my eternal self looks like that.  When we die, we leave this body and return to our natural form.
  • oceanwaves1 said on Oct 20, 2007....
First thing we all need to learn about the afterlife is the truth and yes "I" know what the truth is "GOD" is truth. You can justify anything they are called denominations, but you can only prove the truth.  If God is truth then what God says is the truth. If you want to know what God says go here http://www.tomorrowsworld.org/cgi-bin/tw/tw-mag.cgi?category=Magazine5&item=1103844324; http://www.tomorrowsworld.org/cgi-bin/tw/tw-mag.cgi?category=Magazine29&item=1104249194;http://www.tomorrowsworld.org/cgi-bin/tw/telecast/tw-telecast.cgi?category=Media1&item=1104426373 http://www.tomorrowsworld.org/cgi-bin/tw/tw-mag.cgi?category=Magazine33&item=1104261793  I don't debate on God the truth because I believe we are all intitled to believe what we want, so you may ask why even bother to reply.
The reason I take time to reply is to put the truth out there and if you take the time to read the truth and it's your time to understand you will understand..  So here is your chance.  Why do I believe the way I do because God is the potter and we are the clay and His will will be done.  The truth does not need our approval in order to be the truth.
