April 22 is Earth Day. On this day, I hope all of us can take a few moments from our busy lives to think about the health of Mother Earth. Mother Earth is sick.

The Eart is the only planet with conditions to sustain human life. The future of humanity depends upon the preservation of a healthy biosphere, with all its ecological systems, a rich variety of plants and animals, fertile soil, drinkable waters and breathable air. The protection of the Earth's vitality, diversity and beauty is our shared obligation.

Sadly, we have failed to live up to our obligation. For the past 200 years, since the beginning of Industrial Revolution, the world has evolved patterns of production and consumption which have caused environmental devastation, the depletion of natural resources and led to the extinction of species.

The increasing demand for and the use of fossil fuels, coal, oil and gas, to generate electricity, power vehicles and operate plants and machineries is touted as the biggest threat. The burning of fossil fuels produces carbon dioxide, about half of which is absorbed by the atmosphere. This causes glocal warming which in turn leads to Earth's climate change.

There is now nar universal consensus that humanity are faced with the very real prospect of ecological disaster if we do not drastically reduce our emission of CO2 and find ways to reduce our dependent on fossil fuels.

The battle against global warming and climate change cannot be won by the actions of the Governments and businesses alone. Every individual human being must be aware of the dire straits and be infulenced by the urgency of the problem and we must be prepared to make sacrifices and adjustments to our lifestyles, our values and our attitude towards nature and Mother Earth.

For a start, we can aspire to lead simple lives rather than lives of conspicious consumption. When we make purchases, we can look for ebvironmentally certified products. Most of all, we need to learn to love Mother Earth and do our little part to help restore the balance between the human enterprise and the natural world.

in as much as I appreciate the original sentiment of the clean earth movement (Clean air, water, etc) I can't buy into the MMGW issue. And here is why:
#1 98 % of greenhouse gasses are water vapor, which is part of the earths cooling system as well.
#2  The temperature of Mars has increased at pace with that of the Earth.

I could go on, but I really don't see why. If you can ignor these 2 major facts, then convincing you of anything else is futile.

"#2  The temperature of Mars has increased at pace with that of the Earth."

I was unaware of this one -- do you have a reference?
  • D6fer said on Apr 22, 2007....
Sure here's one of many source google it you'll find many.
  • D6fer said on Apr 22, 2007....
most of what you will find will be from the opposition to the MMGW crowd, but there is plenty of evidence to back it up. This one looks a little more legit: source

d6: is there evidence that there's any meaningful relationship between those things?

  • D6fer said on Apr 22, 2007....

Well considering that all our solar system gets its heat from the same source, I would have to say that is as about a close relationship as you can get. Wouldn't you?

Water vapor is 98% of all greenhouse gas. That is not meaningful?

  • curmudgeon said on Apr 22, 2007....
The meaningful relationship is the observation by solar physicists that the Sun's energy output has been steadily increasing - they say - over the last 1000 years. If observable climate change is occuring on Mars - with no human contribution there - it's safe to say that climate change on Earth is also at least in part due to the Sun's activity.

The Earth's climate will change - with far reaching consequences for humanity - no matter what we do.

That said - attempting to live one's life by purchasing "certified" products will do nothing to help the environment, save make the labelers and manufacturers who conspire with them rich.

There is no such thing as an evironmentally friendly computer, computer screen, copper or fiber wire network, server, hard drive, anything technology related. Simply adopting "green" computer disposal practices is not at all Earth-friendly.

If we need to live "simpler" lives, sacrifices need to be made. But who among us is willing to give up our computers, our TV sets, our cars, our microwave ovens, hot water heaters, air conditioners and heaters?  OK - how about paper, pens, pencils, virtually anything mass produced? I haven't even gotten into long distance transportation of agricultural products.

I really don't think we're prepared to make the kinds of sacrifices necessary to live in harmony with nature.
  • silverwhisper said on Apr 22, 2007....
d6: no i do not, because the degree to which that heat is retained is a function of atmosphere. it's a little more complex i think than floating around the sun.

  • D6fer said on Apr 24, 2007....
exactly....the retention of heat as well as the cooling of the earth is a function of atmosphere....thats where the 98% comes into play....not only does it retain heat , but cools it with precipitation. The parity between the Earth and Mars is in direct relation to the sun...not man.
  • silverwhisper said on Apr 25, 2007....
and that would be a valid point if earth and mars had the same atmospheres. they do not.

    ed
  • D6fer said on Apr 25, 2007....
They have the same heat source......when the source gets hotter....so does earth and mars
  • silverwhisper said on Apr 26, 2007....
except that you already conceded that it's about heat retention, and that's affected by atmosphere.
