Can you name all the planets in our solar system?

Rules:
  1. No googling.
  2. If you want to order them-go for it!
  3. Bonus points if you can get them in order
  4. Bonus points for naming dwarfs
  5. Bonus points for moons.

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranis, ??? ,Pluto

Can I phone a friend? I can't think of the other planet, but do I have them in order?

swizzle- Neptune is missing from above.Jupiter has Io, Ganymede and Europa. Mars has Phobos. Saturn has Titan. There are probably three dozen more.

Daydream- you were sooo close! You have most of them in order, yes Neptune was missing inbetween Saturn and Uranis :-(  There is still one other that's wrong :-)

Beyond- Oh you are good! Mars has 2 the other one is Deimos, Jupiter actually has 63 (known) moons (my kid's into astronomy), Saturn- 34 (named) moons, Uranis-21 named, 6 unnamed, Neptune 8 named and 5 unnamed. You get MAJOR  bonus points for knowing even some of them! I thought just naming them would be a little boring.  Any idea's on the dwarfs?

  • beyondtheveil said on Apr 22, 2007....
swizzle- I'm confused on what you mean by dwarfs. That term usually refers to small suns like "white dwarfs" and there are none in the solar system that I know of.

Or are you refering to something else as a dwarf? Also, I believe Pluto has been removed from the classification as a planet, hasn't it?

i used to know this all off the top of my head...let's see...

    mercury, no satellites.
    venus, no satellites
    earth, 1 moon (luna)
    mars, 2 moons (deimos, phobos)
    jupiter, 16 satellites
    saturn, 12 satellites
    neptune, ?
    uranus, ?
pluto is no longer a planet, possesses 1 moon, charon.

    Here we go:
Mercury-no moons, hot as hell days, cold as Hillary Clinton towards Bill after Monica at night.
Venus-no moons, and constant acid rain.
Earth-1 moon-The Moon (too many flags and golf balls), and too many humans, global warming issues, not enough green space, and its most powerful nation is run by a buffoon. All-in-all: a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. Oh wait...
Mars- 2 potato-shaped moons: Phobos and Deimos (the moons used in Doom), and too many non-functioning human robots, and fossilized plant life.
    -insert Asteroid Belt here-
Jupiter- 60+ moons, including Ganymede, Europa (which might have life), Io, and Callisto (the four moons discovered by Gallileo), and a ring system.
Saturn- 30+ moons, including Titan (the only moon with an athmosphere), Rhea, Thethys, Dione, Iapetus, Enceladus, and Mimas: those are the biggest. Saturn has the most notable and perhaps most beautiful ring system in the entire solar system. COMPLETELY RANDOM AND USELESS FUN FACT!! (Yay!): Saturn is less dense than water, therefore if you could find a ocean big enough, the entire planet would float on the water
Uranus- (pronounced ur-an-is, NOT ur-An-is!) 25+: Cordelia, Ophelia, and Titania. It too has a ring system, consisting of 17 rings. Fun Fact II: Uranus' axis is completely on its side. Scientists are still baffled over it, as usual.
Neptune- 10+ moons, Triton being the only one of signifigance. Neptune has rings!!!! Yes it's true, you just can't see them very well because they're black.
    And that's it!

Pluto is NOT a planet anymore, it was declassified as a planet and is now named a dwarf planet. Sedna is the same (Sedna is a dwarf planet outside of pluto's orbit). Dwarf planets are minuature planets that don't meet the criterium of the IAU (International Astronomical Union), therefore it doesn't become and official planet.

And after the outer reaches of out solar system there's the Kuiper Belt: a HUGE asteroid field.

So, to tally, out solar system consists of 8 planets, two dwarf planets (that we have named), millions if not billions of other smaller things.
    So there you have it!
    YB.

Oh, and before I forget, even though I made jest at american politics, I must thank NASA and american funding to NASA, because if it weren't for them, I wouldn't know squat on this topic.

WOW YB! you are quite the whip! I guess you win all bonus' in the quiz. I guess I don't need to answer any more questions as you have covered them all. I am assuming you mean 25+ moons.?

I'm thankful for all my SC friends. :-) So to pay tribute I will make the turkery, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy. You can bring a side dish or dessert.

All are welcome.

What will you bring?
