Have you ever gotten a call from someone and tripped all over your tongue?  I did that today and thankfully was forgiven. It was a surprise and the shy CW prevailed. I didn't make a very good first impression.  I couldn't pull out the words I wanted to say.

It was one of those conversations that put voices to faces.  It was a nice connection.

I'm a better writer than a speaker hands down.  I get all nervous and tongue tied in conversations sometimes. Once I get over those nerves, I'm fine.  It seems to make a difference on how important the person at the other end of the conversation is to me.  If it's personal, the worse I babble.  I don't know what makes me that way.  It's another "me" project to work on.

The person calling me picked up on my shyness right away and let me get untangled from my tongue.  Thank heaven for that.

So, tell me.  Are you a better writer or speaker?

I'm sure I'm a better writer than a speaker, but I'm not a complete slouch in speaking either. But the more complex ideas get, the better I am about writing it down than trying to convince someone by speaking.

My speaking and articulating gets better the more familiar I become with a person.  I have a very quiet nature.  I'm not unable to communicate the spoken word, but I get flustered.

CW -- exactly. I find the same thing applies online as well even though the boundaries that you can push start off a little more broad.

(Mainly with regards to joking with someone).

I do okay, speaking, on the phone, but I'm sure I'm a better writer than speaker. When you're speaking, you can't go back and delete it when you say something totally dumb. Now when it's someone I know well, I could talk on the phone for hours.
  • silverwhisper said on Apr 21, 2007....
honestly, i think i fare pretty well either way. i think of myself as a better writer, but then again, that's my aspiration, after all. but i'm told that when i'm speaking in a face to face conversation about something that really interests me, i'm pretty compelling.

i do better writing than speaking. i think i'm more articulate when i write than speaking it. maybe because i could edit what i write.
  • botoni said on Apr 21, 2007....
I m a talker. I write passably well but I speak more readily and more easily. Perhaps the fluency in vocal things comes from many years of speaking to audiences of 10 to 2500 people. Partly too, I m a born ham and love center stage.
A thought for anyone who feels shy about speaking one on one or in groups. Find a local Toastmaster group. You ll gain confidence for public speaking but you ll also notice a difference in the one on one situations.

I guess it also depends on WHO you are speaking to for the first time CW! If you have special feelings for that person it is quite natural to be THROWN. Remember a lot of suppressed emotions come forth at once. It can be mind boggling ............,but extremely exiting....I promise you! So forget about it, you will become comfortable with his voice before you know it. So just enjoy my girl....just enjoy...................

Well, I have to say I stutter when I write and talk so I prefer to type at least I can erase the stutter.

I think I speak as I write. But somethimes one can say it better when writing.
  • Zayda said on Apr 21, 2007....
honestly, i don't have a problem with either; my job necessitates that i be good at both. i speak to classrooms full of students every day and at conferences in front of audiences as small as 10 or as large as 100 or more. my friends talk about what a good listener and conversationalist i am.

but, i tend to think of myself as a better writer.

    Tin,
I agree.  We are on the same wave length here.

    Mimi,
I do LOTS of editing until I get it right.  :-)

    ed,
That doesn't surprise me.  You seem very "together" as a person.  I'm sure your conversations are as captivating as your writing.

    queen,
    I agree about the editing.

    botoni,
I see you as someone who holds the attention of a room...and i mean that in a good way!  :-D

    KC,
I did enjoy it and will continue to.  You understand me very well.  :-D

    mom,
You always crack me up.  I think I would laugh until I cried in conversations with you.  I'm sure your humor shines.  :-D

    skald,
Then you must be a wonderful speaker!

    Zayda,
I also see you as a very "together" person like ed.  I see you as exuding confidence.

I am definitely a better writer , I to get tongue tied and if I have to speak in front of a crowd. I am so nervous.
  • CreativeWoman said on Apr 21, 2007....
    MsStar,
I understand how you feel.  The times I have had to speak in front of a group, I have made special effort not to show my nerves.  Once I write something I don't worry about it.  It's not the same with speaking.  I always think about what I should have said later.

CW...in my mother language i have not problem with either .i have spoken in front a big groups of people, i have been interviewed on television, i had to speak a lot because of my job as reporter....and writing..well, i had to write my interviews so......still i like myself better when i write...

Here i have to sadly admit i am better as a writer...i still feel some gap between how much more i could impress people if  i would speak in Italian. The fact that i have to speak in English sometimes is frustrating.....but most of the time i am ok..

Speaking at the phone is still quite different...it helps me a lot reading the expression on the people's faces when i speak to them....naturally at the phone its impossible so i still have some hesitations...unless i am speaking with people i know...

  • KayRoseOrchid said on Apr 21, 2007....
Writer, most definitely. I am one of the quiet ones in real life. And I don't mean to be.
But if you were to ask me this question 3 or 4 years ago, I'd answer speaker. It takes time for me to get comfortable now. It didn't use to. But there are those random times when I blab on with any random person!

I am a much better writer in comparison to my speaking abilities. I am not the best writer in the world, but when it comes to public speaking I am such a disaster haha. I have two phobias, public speaking and flying on airplaines.

cw -- when i'm in werewolf mode, i think i speak better as compared to when i'm in routine work mode. and at least i can still write legibly. i also tend to have a wider repertoire of affectionate terms, from nnggrrrawwwllllhhh to arrghhhwwrrrowwrrr. see the subtle difference in tone? can't say i'm that articulate when i'm working at the office. in kung fu-tzu mode, my syntax and logic turns atrocious, whether in writing or speaking. sometimes it depends on the current persona. like now, i'm rambling again. the belgrade circus midget wants to do cartwheels and climb the rostrum chair.

I've been told things like I could talk my way out
    of murder...or that I'm wasting my time...should
    work at a radio station...lol

I can communicate pretty well....as long as the
topic doesn't make me feel emotionally
    vulnerable...because then...I start going in
    circles...speaking in code...thoughts run
faster than my words...and I find myself in a bind...

  • mystrongopinions said on Apr 21, 2007....
    I guess I didn't answer the question...lol, I'd say
I do better at speaking...but the writing flows...
just as my thoughts do...lol, all over the place.

My writing's much stronger owing to the simple fact that I can give any statement a considerable amount of thought before I put it down on paper.  I get the feeling many of you feel the same way.

I am, however, pretty quick on my feet.

A friend of mine has this incredible ability to recite verbatim anything he's read once.  Secretly, I am jealous, but I don't let it show.  As a matter of fact, I respect him all the more for possessing such ability.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Apr 23, 2007....
I tend to make more sense when I write.  I take more time to organize my communications.  I am more persuasive when I speak.  I can gage how I'm coming across by looking at them and adjust my "pitch" to suit the audience.
  • botoni said on Apr 23, 2007....
This post has come to mind several times. I ve mulled why I feel I am a better speaker than I am a writer. Slow witted as I can be at times the reason finally dawned. The written word cannot be heard ergo the inflection of voice cannot enhance the intent of the writer. Just as two different actors can deliver lines in a completely different manner. A speaker can present facial expression, body language and intonation to expose much more than is possible in writing.
  • lioneljay said on Apr 25, 2007....
In situations where I know very few people, I tend to be quite shy. But I do enjoy getting to know people so it was a godsend (yes, even agnostics can use that word) to find discussion forums and blogging sites. I've long maintained that I'm not really a kind smartass, but I play one on the internet. The keyboard does give me an extra boost of confidence.

Like Z, my profession calls for me to do a lot of writing and a fair amount of presenting so I'm certainly comfortable in both modes on the job.

  • goddess_in_love said on Apr 26, 2007....
Well I know from experience that I do the same things and I know how embarassing that can be! but for me I am a better writer then speaker! if you were to read my poetry and the try to get me to read them to you, you would only know what I was ssaying cause you had just read it before I attempted to say it! but definitely I write better then I speak!

In this post, I talked about how this writer I can't remember (thanks brain) used to make up stories using miniatures sitting on a mantle.

So that's got me wondering. If you had a shadow box with a dozen spots for a miniature, what would you...
