Making myself trim and sexy is one of the next big things I've decided work on.  With 80 or so pounds gone, I feel that's in reach.  I'm trying to apply smart eating habits and behavioral changes to my lifestyle.  No more fad diets for me.

I've tried many, many fad diets over the years.  It's that same sad song you've heard a million times.  I lost weight and then gained it back plus some.

The very worst fad diet for me was the famed Cabbage Soup Diet that was supposed to have garnered success with heart patients at the Mayo Clinic.  I was determined that one would make me thin.  I could eat as much of it as I wanted.  The only problem was that I found it to taste vile.  It's basically vegetable soup.  I don't do vegetable soup.  It makes me want to hurl.  So why did I think I could force myself to eat it?  Obviously, that didn't last long.

I've also tried another supposed heart patient diet where you could eat in rotation hot dogs, bananas, eggs and tomatoes.

Woman's World magazine has lured me many times at the check out line with "Lose 20 Pounds In 20 Days" types of headlines.  I know first hand how the lure of fad diets is so very tempting.  I just haven't had success when I've tried them.

Have you ever tried a fad diet?  Did it work for you?

No I don't diet. The thing to do is eat less and eat a lot of vegs. And then one has to do some work out. Walking and swimming are the best sports because they help the whole body. Movement and the right food that is the thing. ♥♥♥

i suppose one could call the atkins diet a fad diet. however, it worked pretty well for me. i dropped around 30 lbs and it's largely stayed off.

i'm a carnivore by nature. i like eggs, cheese and meat in pretty much all its forms. so going to a no carb diet was initially kinda my idea of heaven. i didn't realize how much i'd miss fruit, vegetables and starch after a while.

i still avoid sugar where i can--drink diet soda, use equal instead of sugar where possible, etc.

but what's helped me a whole lot in keeping the weight off i think was the process of walking. just regular exercise in some form. i walk around 2 miles/day or so and that boost to the metabolism is good. if only i could be disciplined enough to do it after dinner, though...

    queen,
Good luck with the new plan.

    skald,
I've been trying to add a few more fruits and vegetables to my diet.  Bananas, red grapes, and watermelon are my favorite fruits.

    ed,
I tried Atkins.  My body rebelled and I gained weight.  I'm not quite sure why, but it happened.  I blamed it on the fresh whole farm milk and cream I was using in the recipes.  My body is more cooperative with clear broth soups.  I do the same regarding sugar and exercise.

The after 7 diet is what I'm "supposed" to be on.  No food after 7.  Don't eat 3 hours before bed time.  Also, leave a quarter of your meal on the plate.  From the mind of someon with an eating disorder...don't know how much it's worth...

Please forgive me on this one but isn't the best diet-moderation?  Exersize, eat a well balanced diet.  Other than that, have your physicals and ask your doctor for advice.     I don't diet because I am perpetually under-weight (please no negative remarks, it's just as hard to gain when you are under as it is to lose when you think you are over).  I have never agreed with the no or low carb diet as (from what I understand) carbs are what feed our brains.  They seem pretty important to me.  Okay, if you feel the need to you can tell me to be quiet and I will go sit in a corner.

Yes, I to have tried many many fad diets. I have struggled not only with my weight but I never had a toned body. All my friends were always slimmer almost making me feel like a 3 wheel when we went places together. Dieting is terrible. I find that instead of trying the atkins, or the south beach diet which only last for a couple weeks until your sick of everything. Try eating what you want. Portioning is a big step in the process. I am just one of those busy people that get caught up in a day to day life at work in front of my computer. Go home with take out, sit the kids down for a quick dinner, then it out the door to soccer, or baseball or whatever! At night before I go to sleep, I use my machine called the Tua Excel. Its just a belt that widens, runs off from a 9 volt battery, (which is safe) its timeable and adjustable. I have been using it for 3 months and have all ready lost inches, and noticed that my cellulite has faded to half it was before. Lets face it everyone may need a little help. www.bodyexerciser.com

    daily,
I tried something similar to that too.  I do best without depriving myself.  I'm trying the smaller meals throughout the day.  I'm trying to wait until I'm hungry and then eat whatever time that may be.

    skald,
I hate when I let it go bad.  I'm getting better about judging how much to buy at a time though.

    Swizzle,
That's exactly what I'm trying to do.  I just thought we would talk about fad diets because they are so popular.  Lifestyle change is what I'm trying to accomplish.

    Emily,
I'm glad you have found the combination that works for you.  I am watching portions too and walking.

CW- You I guess could try one of my downfalls to not gaining-I don't like to feel full, just comfortably satisfied.  I don't like eating any more than I have to.  Or you could try and retrain your brain to thinking that eating is boring.  I personally get bored of cooking and eating what I've just tested.  Needless to say (again, my husband is AMAZING) my hubby cooks most dinners so that I am not disinterested by the time dinner rolls around.  I also like to eat small amounts through out the day as opposed to 3 large meals. Maybe I should start my own diet fad :-)

I've done south beach with success.  Mostly I just stop eating the stuff I KNOW is putting the weight on when it's out of control.  I also try to walk more.

    Swizzle,
Lately, I have been trying to stay hungry.  I'm trying to force my body to use the fuel it has.  We'll see if it works for me.  You should write about how you do diet on your blog.  :-)

    uniquely,
My mind knows what to do, but the rest of me doesn't always follow.  :-)  Glad you've had success.

For lots of years I did the fad diets.  They worked, but the weight always came back and then some.

i think the only way to beat the weight is to stop looking for the magic 'pill'-
and after 40, if you don't exercise, i know just diet won't do the trick.

i think the after 7 is a good general rule.
as is drinking 8 + glasses of water a day.

CW- The one thing I forgot to add is something that you already have (you score a perfect 10 on this one). A positive attitude towards achieving your goal.  I already know you'll do it :-)
  • CreativeWoman said on Apr 20, 2007....
    secret,
Healthy eating and exercise is definitely the way to go.  I learned a long time ago that the diet pills don't work.  Lord knows, I was always trying the next over the counter thing.
