Everyone has their own definition of comfort food.  You know, that gastronomic equivalent of a hug....or a warm fuzzy blanket...or the feeling of home.

I make fried chicken and mashed potatoes for my family....or maccaroni and cheese...or meatloaf.  My husband thinks meatloaf = comfort.

But my personal favorite comfort food, nobody eats but me in my house.  It's pasta fagioli (i pronounce this pasta fa-zool ala my mother's pronunciation), which translates to pasta and beans.

Pasta fagioli is a traditional italian peasant dish.  It's made with elbow (or any of the smaller noodles, and often you see this dish with mixed noodle types ...the idea is whatever you have leftover, throw in the pot in terms of noodles.)

Normally you use white cannelini beans, but i also mix in chick peas (garbonzo beans/ceci beans) and even navy beans.

You mix the pasta and beans in a tomato sauce (base: olive oil, onion, garlic, etc) and you're all ready to eat.

I don't usually make this dish for myself.  But my mother will make a batch and send some to my house and my sister's house.  She knows we both love it, and she knows it's a treat.

So, that's my favorite comfort food.
With maybe some rice pudding for dessert.

What's your favorite?

I love eating donuts or a toast bagel. A bagel makes me feel all warm inside.

Hmm. I know what comfort food is but I don't usually think about it that way, or think about having a favorite.

    But I'll try:
    Fried potatoes with onion
    Homemade beef stew
    Homemade chili
Homemade bread and/or rolls, fresh from the oven with melted butter.

Some of my family's favorites are grilled cheese sandwiches, sloppy tuna sandwiches with pickles, pot roast w/baby potatoes and waffles.

My "go to" food is something I picked up from my mom's family.  It's a raw onion sandwich with lots of butter and salt and sweet onions.  I love those, but cannot eat them if I want to be around people afterwards.

My Oma (german for gramma) used to make us apple struedel, but I haven't had that since she passed away.

Well Sl there is alot to be said for mom's cooking. I can't seem to get alot of her recipies correct in my kitchen. So when im in need I go to the source and just about any thing mom makes constitutes comfort food but in the intrest of a list: #1. Corn bread (mom's tastes more like cake!) #2. Collard greens with ham hocks (Uuuumm) #3. Gumbo (can't keep my friends away form this one) #4. Chit-lins (only my mom's) Note:Be careful whos chit-lins you eat. They must be cleaned very very well.

It's gotta be chocolate chip cookies.  I can eat homemade ones by the dozen.  When the kids were smaller. my wife used to make a double batch every Sunday and Wednesday night.  I'm sure I ate half of them.....right out of the oven is the best!!!

Secret.........my comfort foods are so many it would take a whole blog....

But i have to say that 4 stand up: my mom trademark Xmas chocolate cookies for the sweet side, and eggplant parmigiana, sautee cicoria and fettuccine with wild mushrooms. These 3 last ones are the ones that i always ask her to cook for me anytime i go back in Italy to visit.

See...the ingredients are different. I can re-make these dishes here but the problem is the different taste of the ingredients.

The cicoria (chicory) and the melanzane (eggplants)  i am talking about come from the garden of an old woman who sells only green produces and herbs, fresh cut the same morning, at our open market.

There are different kind of chicory in Italy, some sweeter than other. It depends by the soil. The one that grows in my area is small, very dark green and really bitter but comes out almost sweet when sautee with oil of olive, red pepper flakes and lots of garlic. Its so good that when i was younger i would make a panino (sandwhich) with it for afternoon snack...:-).

The fettuccine are extra special too because she makes them from scratch: my mom has never-ever bought ready to cook fettuccine or lasagna. She takes her well worn out wooden square board (irony is my ex husband made it for her the first year of our marriage since her first one was completely cracked) and she works her magic any time.

The wild mushrooms come from another old guy who sell them by decades at the same open market. He is an old friend of my parents, like the old lady above. This guy lives on top of the hills and sells cultivated and wild mushrooms: the wild ones are naturally the best and more sought after. He goes to find them in special places which locations has been passed on from generation to generation. Folks go hunting for mushrooms during the week ends and some can be very lucky too. My uncle is one of them....last time i was at my mom's home we ate fettuccine with the mushrooms he had found the same morning.

So there is no way i can recreate those flavors here.

Not even Central Marker or Whole Foods are helpful.........lol....

But here i can eat my other comfort food anytime i want, luckily: chocolate in any shape and combination, but preferably dark chocolate. And those Xmas chocolate cookies dipped in my Espresso.....uhmmmm

  • genalonewolf said on Apr 20, 2007....
It would have to be fresh baked bread with butter or warm pumpkin pie with ice cold whipped cream! yum
  • LadyGamer said on Apr 20, 2007....
Rainbow sherbet is a frozen desert like ice cream only I don't believe it is a dairy product. It has several flavors swirled together. Green(lime), Orange, and pink(strawberry).
  • zombied420 said on Apr 20, 2007....

Everything that my Mom cooks it brings me back, hence its comfort food.

But if I had to pick one it would have to be....(Chilaquiles)

Chilaquiles is a traditional Mexican dish consisting of fried or dried tortilla chips, bathed in green or red salsa or mole, and broiled or grilled with a cheese topping. Sometimes chicken strips are mixed into the sauce, or the dish can be served with a fried egg on top or a strip of meat alongside.

Doesn't this sound so so so good.

Good I could eat some of this right now.

Instead I am eating this right now.

  • rightwingwizard said on Apr 21, 2007....
Mine would be Buffalo Wings,  A close second might be french fries sprinkled generously with vinegar.  Oh yea, of course a nice dark beer to wash it all down.
  • moonriver said on Apr 21, 2007....
secret -- funny, but i had to think real hard before i could come up with an answer to this, which i'm not even sure is the right one. possible explanation: i've been so peripatetic for too long, these lines may apply to me: "i am nameless, and all names are mine / i am homeless, and all homes are mine / i am tribeless, and all tribes are mine..." to which i could add, "i am foodless, and all foods are mine..."

but two kinds of dish do fit in as comfort food in my case. one's a type of rich and thick chicken-and-rice gruel, with certain spices thrown in that gives it a distinct aroma. another is basically a chinese-style noodle soup that can be prepared with diverse styles and condiments. both dishes enhanced with a dash of soy sauce, lime, and white pepper. quick to prepare. best served while cooped up during monsoon rains, while warming yourself beside a fire.

  • kidlatin said on Apr 21, 2007....
If I may, my comfort foods are  bulalo,  tocino,
newly catched bangus in charcoal,  fried liver,
pork chicharon with hot vinegar, Roxas talaba
and crabs,  dried squid , barquillos  and  any
    bread from panaderia de molo

  • magentaink said on Apr 21, 2007....
my biggest comfort food was ice cream, but I gave up white sugar -- so no more ice cream. don't even talk to me about that no sugar or low fat stuff, its not the same. I think another comfort food would be breaded chicken cutlet with macaroni and cheese, or homemade vegetable soup with cheese and crackers. now you're making me hungry! :)

Secret, I don't have a comfort food.  If I need comforting, the last thing I want to do is eat.  I do joke that there isn't much chocolate and good hair won't fix, at least temporarily.  lol!
  • sweetlady said on Apr 22, 2007....
I really like a variety of foods which I realise I have considered comfort foods.  It is mostly sweet foods although cheese and potato pie which is a homemade favourite is really really nice.  If I add onion or bacon bits as well it makes it even nicer. The last one I made was simply mashed potatoes with black pepper, margarine mixed in and plenty of grated cheese mixed in and then then some cheese on top.  This then went in the oven until it was warmed through and the cheese was going a bit brown on top.  Ice cream is one of my top favourites along with chocolate as far as sweet things go.
