short version: the phillippine government is putting out an open call to hackers to crack their online voting system, which will be made available july 10. long version here.

commentary: clearly, the government of the philippines gets it, whereas in the US we’re stuck with idiots like diebold. seriously, i want to know who’s getting the metaphoric hummer from these clowns. my hat’s off to comelec for understanding exactly what it means to “stress test” an application.

hi ed. i'm a filipino. and yes i heard of this news before. and honestly i dont think this is a good idea. more cheating will still happens and much more easier if using online voting. i mean do you remember the "i love you" virus? it was made by a filipino. and i think it would get easily hacked this...

although on some good points i think it's also a great idea that they are testing it first before using online voting. since there's so many overseas filipino worker i think its nice that they can still use their right to vote.

and i wont compliment comelec if i were you. there are so many controversies involving them that i cant say.

i'm not saying this to put some bad name on my country. i'm just being honest. i love my country, the philippines and since the elections is coming up i wish there would be a fair election.

i know you're a filipino, queen. i do see the user handles when you and the others start typing in tagalog. :>

but comelec is testing this system the right way. i'm aware that there's rumors of corruption in the government, but still, this particular move was, i think, the right one.

well gotta agree on that ed. we'll just wait and see if it really works. =)

Hey, at the very least, it will give the young f*#kers something useful to do for a change.
  • silverwhisper said on Apr 19, 2007....
    queen: true enough. :>

skin&bones: welcome! i've just been looking at some of your blog entries. :> and yeah, perhaps something productive can come from the desire to be destructive.

ED!  OMG we agree on something!  I think it's a brilliant way to test it.
  • Lioness said on Apr 19, 2007....
Ed, this is a breakthrough. It would erase any doubts from future users: the voters. I guess this would somehow address some future problems before actual implementation. Who knows, this pilot project would be a model to be replicated in other countries.

The government sure know about technology. I remember the last time they were attacked by some hackers in their websites (.gov websites). They learned their lesson (don't look at me that..I'm not a hacker hehehe).

Our government  did the right thing. To be able to create a well-protected online database for e-voting they should be tested by hackers so as to see what weak spots the system has that can be reprogram for improvement.

  • queenparanoia said on Apr 20, 2007....
well i hope this time the program wont be hacked... remember the i love you virus???
  • silverwhisper said on Apr 20, 2007....
brenneelee: holy crap--we can't let this happen again! :D

    lioness: i share that hope.

silent wisp: as you can see, we're in agreement. you speak as someone who has some in-depth knowledge of IT. ?

It sounds like an interesting concept.  I don't know much about it, so I am commenting to follow along and learn more about it. I always like to see voting encouraged...anywhere in the world.  :-)

I forgot to tell you there some companies that also has hackers testing they new systems before putting it on the market. That way the quality is being tested and further updating.

silverwhisper:  You had a right guess. My course is related to it and also our professors give us certaing information regarding the IT world. It a plus to our knowledge bank ahahaha

queenparanoia: Yes, I do remember that I LOve Virus. If only the teacher didn't reject the student research or thesis. He never had the anger to spread it in the net. He is quite smart and I'm sure he is recruited by certain companies of this kind of skill he had. I know this wrong but my classmates are proud of him. A little info: The school he was in is my school today ^_^

  • queenparanoia said on Apr 21, 2007....
silent wisp: ows talaga??? so are you from ama or sti? i forgot the school. anyway i heard that the guy who made the i loveyou virus was working either NASA, CIA, or scotland yard. i dont know where but not in the philippines!!!! pinoys made a big mistake on this one!!!
  • silverwhisper said on Apr 21, 2007....
CW: that's the way to learn, my friend. :>

silent wisp: i'm familiar w/ the practice of getting a few hackers to stress-test an app but i've never heard of a government adopting that approach. that's pretty progressive for a government body, i figure. what kind of IT work are you planning on doing in the future?

    ed
  • silent_wisp said on Apr 23, 2007....

Queenparanoia: I'm from AMA. And they said he is working outside Philippines believe to recruited by a company (I'm not sure what company). We never blame pinoys kasi it's our curiousity and innovative attitude.

Silverwhisper: I want to be in networking field. Right now I'm self-studying certain networking. But sometimes I wish I want to do digital animation or animator...but sadly no course is provided. The course I'm taken in is my second choice. But the IT work can be interesting...especially programming hehehe

  • silverwhisper said on Apr 23, 2007....
i wish you fortune in finding your preferred field, silent wisp. :>

Silverwhisper...honeslty with or without hacking there will be cheating in our elections this year... Early this campaign period i decided not to vote... Know why? No one seems to deserve my vote, if ever i do vote it will only be altered or not counted, if i dont vote my name will be used by other people to add votes to their cheating politician... Politics is a dirty game... You can be of help to your country whether you are in position or not.
  • silverwhisper said on Apr 29, 2007....
sweet cookie, while i agree that one can be useful without being a politician, i can't comment meaningfully otherwise on what you said: i'm not there, i don't know the situation. having said that, i want to believe that perhaps if everyone did turn out, it would be harder to cheat?

    ed
  • sweet_cookie01 said on Apr 30, 2007....
One thing I am very sure of i hate politics... ever since i learned that there was massive vote buying and other forms of cheating during elections i stopped voting. What can i say.... I am no fan of politicians.
  • silent_wisp said on May 01, 2007....

    silverwhisper: Thanks and hoping so

sweet coookie01: I understand you. Our place is full of smart people. Smart people that they will use their wits to able to have such power. Honestly, I would say there no more rightful official to be voted every politicians has a record or corruption activity. --=sigh=- I'm sure there will be another revolution or EDSA ...again...they like ruining the history..

  • silverwhisper said on May 02, 2007....
    sweet cookie, i don't think anybody's really a fan of politicians. :>

silent wisp: you'll blog about it, right? when you've gotten some movement about how you'll be employed, i mean?

whaat? I don't know how stupid the government can get. hey, maybe they figured it would be easier to doctor the elections if it's all in one place like the net. haha. are you sure it's not a call to find a hacker to make that job easier for them, like they'll just end up hiring him to do their dirty work for them?
  • LayaMaria said on May 17, 2007....
hey, cookie ;) i hate the political atmosphere in our country myself, but i think it's better to vote.  if you don't vote you'd like go down without a fight. you know what they say, the best way for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing (excuse the cliche). in law they call it estoppel... silence means yes. at least, i'll have something to base my complaints on if worse comes to worst. i think they call it "justiciable controversy" in law; you have to be affected by something first before you can validly complain about it. if you didn't vote, they'd say you don't have any right to complain about the cheating since you didn't use your right to vote in the first place.
  • LayaMaria said on May 17, 2007....
hello queen ;) I think this election is a wee bit better so far. at least the partial results look promising. the question is if somebody's doing another "hello garci" behind the scenes. now more than ever people have to be more vigilant. the term "edsa" is getting to be very hackneyed, but we're gonna need it again if this election gets doctored.
  • Lioness said on May 17, 2007....
hi Laya, i honestly think that although our political system has yet to mature, it is prevalent (as seen in the unofficial results of the May 14 elections) that the people is now making use of its brains when it comes to voting people into public office.

Some people have lose hope. But I am still hopeful.
  • LayaMaria said on May 17, 2007....

hi lioness :) yup, I saw it. the partial results do look promising this time, but i'm keeping my fingers crossed. I've been following the election scene almost all of my life ---my aunt who brought me up is a school teacher and consistent BOI chairman---- so I have an idea of all those shenanigans that happen during canvassing time.

    keep those fingers crossed! :D

  • silverwhisper said on May 17, 2007....
layamaria, have you ever worked in software development? this is a well-known practice. i think your paranoia about the government is driving your comments here, which while perhaps warranted, is i think clouding your vision.

    ed
  • LayaMaria said on May 17, 2007....
silver :)) I am not being paranoid #-o I just see the possible result of this practice, that's all :)) never underestimate the resourcefulness of the Filipinos. We can think up different uses for ordinary things that never crossed your mind yet =)) anyway, if it's a practice, I'll bet it's another Pinoy who succeeds in hacking it. And dollars to doughnuts someone in a high-up position gets that person on his or her payroll for future contingencies =))
  • sweet_cookie01 said on May 17, 2007....
layamaria... i did vote... i decided to vote on the morning of the election... (",) i still have that indelible ink in my pointer.... and not surprisingly there are millions who didnt vote. I am 3o years old.. i have been voting since i was legible to vote... i am just so disgusted that with all the times i have been voting cheating is still rampant... i was even a poll watcher once... you see people just dont wake up and say i wont vote... its a decision that was hard to make... but i did vote just to make sure that those i think are worth it gets my vote. (",)
  • silverwhisper said on May 18, 2007....
layamaria, i promise, you guys do not have a monopoly on hackers. :>
