This morning my mother-in-law was not feeling very well. She was feeling chills and yet she was sweating profusely. Her chest hurt and she was having shooting pains go down both arms.

My wife and father-in-law took her to the hospital where she'll be staying under observation until at least Monday. They say that her heart is enlarged and is not pumping blood properly. She has not had any heart problems before, as far as I know. The doctors don't know the cause yet.

I don't know. The doctors were surprised that she hasn't had any problems before.

My heart goes out to your and your family, Tin. I hope everything turns out okay and she returns with a clean bill of health.

I know how it feels. My mother just got outta the hospital with a diagnosis of diabetes. But she's come out of it being more vigilant about her eating habits, and hopes to teach me and my brothers to watch what we're eating.

Tin, I hope everything is okay!  Thankfully, she didn't ignore it and went to the hospital.

My Dad, he's got a new part in his body called a pacemaker!  We were all shocked that he was having cardiac issues, but the doctor's weren't!

Thinking of you and your family,

Thanks for the comments. I'll probably spend most of tomorrow at the hospital but I'm not sure.

Two of my three children might not be able to go in to see her, which will be hard on them especially my five-year-old daughter.

It hasn't really hit my wife hard yet, but we both know it will. We just discussed it a little bit.

So thanks again for the kind thoughts. I'll keep everyone updated when we know more.

So we went to visit my mother-in-law today. She looked okay, if a little tired. She's only getting cat naps, and that's understandable.

It turns out that she did have a heart attack.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women, and kills almost twice as many women as all other cancers combined, including breast cancer.

The thing is, women are less likely to recognize the symptoms of a heart attack. Even I was thrown off a little by her symptoms, since she was experiencing chest pain and shooting pains down both arms. I did understand enough to say that she needed to go to the hospital now. The doctor said that it was a good thing that she did go to the hospital.

She's only 64 and relatively healthy. She had had a swollen heart when she was young (which we kids only just found out) but she has never shown any signs or symptoms before. That's what makes this so scary.

Anyway, she's getting an angiogram tomorrow. Hopefully she'll be able to come home by Tuesday.

Like any major medical change like this, she'll have to change her diet and other aspects of her life. She won't be able to return to work for several weeks--she works in daycare/preschool.

Thanks, all, for the thoughts and prayers and wishes.

TS - I'm glad that the doctors were able to diagnose and treat your MIL.  It is scary that women seem less able to recognize the signs of heart attack, but it's most likely because until recently it was not as common in women as men.  I'm sure that the lifestyle changes she will have to make will be tough for her.  I'm sure you and your family will be a big help with encouragement and all.  She seems to have a lot to live for.
  • TinSoldier said on Apr 17, 2007....
Well, her angiogram didn't show any blockages, just some old scar tissue. That may have been from when she had a swollen heart that went away when she was a teenager.

She should be able to come home by Wednesday.

    Thank goodness!

Will she be on medication?  If so, please ask what she needs to stay away from.  My father is on a bunch of meds, but can't drink herbal teas or use some herbal home remidies.  They have a class at out local hospital for cardiac patients on what they can and can't have.

Actually, they just went to pick her up about an hour or so ago. I don't know about meds yet, but she has lists of stuff that she can't eat and most of it has to do with sodium, of course.
  • MissMimi said on Apr 17, 2007....
I'm so glad things went well for her, Tin. Now she'll just have to behave herself...;)
  • dailyachesandpains said on Apr 17, 2007....
Tin, my dad couldn't eat a lot of sodium either.  My Mother, the salt queen was ticked that she couldn't cook high sodium foods and add more salt when cooking.

It was REALLY difficult for us to arrange dinners around his diet at first.  After a while, we got the hang of it.  One thing he couldn't have a lot of was broccolli, but he could still have it.  First day out of the hospital, he sat with raw broccolli in front of him and ate it all day!  He got confused...my heart broke.  It was just really hard.
