So, is the 'N' word now seen as more vulgar in English than the 'F' word?

What about when it's used by whites versus used by blacks?

Personally, I say yes, in both cases. I think that a movie like Blazing Saddles could not and would not be made today and if it was it would be roundly denounced by civil rights activists.

In fact, I have no clue as to how civil rights activists see that movie today, even though it is a satire of its times.

What do you think?

  • curmudgeon said on Apr 14, 2007....
Yeah - Blazing Saddles would never be made today - or if it was, they would expunge the n-word the way they excised Buutermaker's heavy drinking in the "Bad News Bears" remake.

There's a huge double standard in the appropriate use of language when it comes to the races and Imus got caught in the middle of it.

There is a great deal of hate baggage that comes with the use of the N word by a white person.  We should have enough grace and kindness in our hearts to recognize that it is a greater sin for a white to use this word, because of this baggage.

The "N" word came from British people calling people from India that word and to blacks. I think that saying that word to someone means that person is ignorant. I don't think anyone should say.
  • TinSoldier said on Apr 15, 2007....
So, is it more offensive than the F word? I think it is. I've been known to drop an F bomb once in awhile but I almost always use the other word only for quoting or illustration.

Then I go back to the movie Blazing Saddles. You know, I used to think it was a very funny movie. Both for its actual humor as well as for its shock value. But now it's painful to watch it in some ways because of the changes in our society.

Yeah, the movie was making fun of racial divisions in the seventies. It was satire, and I think it was very good at being satirical. I still find it somewhat funny, just not so much.

I remember reading about a politician several years ago who used the word "niggardly", which has no relation to the other N word, and he was lambasted for it because people thought he was being racist. The word has become so ugly that it has spread to other words that sound similar.

You know, growing up I'd always heard brazil nuts referred to as "nigger-toes". My in-laws still use this term but it grates on me almost intolerably. I've tried to change that but that's not happening. I just can't express to them some of the connotations behind that word.

MsBradford -- you are correct. No one should use that word. Not that the word itself is any more offensive than any other word, but because of all of the painful history that the word brings to mind. I think that it has become the most hateful word in all of human history.
  • TinSoldier said on Apr 15, 2007....
    I forgot to mention:

I read a newspaper article several months ago discussing the use of the N word among African Americans. Many of them agreed that the word has such a hateful history and can bring forth such painful emotions and memories that no one should ever use it.

Some younger people though took pride in taking ownership of the word; taking ownership of the word empowered them in a way. It gave them power over the past that the word represents.
  • silverwhisper said on Apr 15, 2007....
honestly, i think that calling someone "nigger" is worse than saying "fuck", and that's b/c of what's being communicated: the former is a word that expresses hate; the latter just expresses having no class.

The N-word and the F-word are both alive, well and used every day here in  America and elsewhere in the world.  So to are C_ _ _  S _ _ _ er, Mother F-er, White Trash
(a term used no less than the N word), Dyke, ect.....

These words are just that, words, and not everyone lives in a rose garden.

These words or terms are used because they fit...they work, they are very descriptive and to the point, they leave little room to misunderstand.

Misused and misapplied, ofcourse.  But so to is the need (requirement) to address all Judges as your "Honor", yet, very few deserve the word Honor mentioned when addressing them.

Like integrity and politics....two words that should never share a domain simultaneously.

I think rappers should be able to use the N-word, I think gays should be able to use the word F_ _ _ _ t.

Words that are exactingly to the point should not be shunned by anyone simply because the words will never die, but self censoring in their use(s)?  Yea, self-censoring, something all people wish others would practice, but wish away.

People will always need something to bitch about, this week it was nappy headed ho's utterance by Imus.  Next week something else.   The girls knew they weren't what the words implied, yet they were not the first to complain, rather jumping on the train once they had support, otherwise, I do not think you would have heard from the girls as I am sure none of them wake up to Imus in the morning shows, nor really cared after all what he had ever said (evidenced by each girl's ignorance as to who'  Imus was, or even what "platform" he spoke from).

As long as people exist, someone is going to offend someone, somewhere, somehow.

As long as the word exist, someone, somewhere, somehow, is going to use it.

It was a question put to you by me in order that I may understand your position(s) taken upon the subject matter of any given post, specifically addressing racial post as above, I thought any insight to your personal social dating habits may shed light on your opinions.

Just interested in a little bit more of "you" and not necessarily the post at hand, nonetheless it would tend to aid in understanding your thoughts more clearly by knowing from which platform you speak.

Ok. That's fair. I have only had one interracial relationship. The others have been of my same race. But, to be fair, I've always lived in places with a low population of ethnicities. I find a great deal of black men to be attractive, as well as some Latinos. I haven't come across any hot Asian guys though, I don't know why. I'll give anyone a second look if their cute. Skin color doesn't really matter to me much, I just end up being attracted to white guys.

As far as that affecting my opinions and postings, I don't know.

In all fairness, I believe that would affect how you respond to a post or an opinion.

Just as my living with two women affects how I respond to Bi-Sexual girls and akin subject matter.

You would be less likely to side with inter-racial dating or couples if you were prejudice, rather than curious, as it appears you were.

I have this feeling in my gut, that irregardless of how you put it, I think you ended up with a white guy so that those you care about and matters to you, would accept your choice, rather than say, your curiosity.

I think using any word that is a slang insult to any  ethnicity is wrong.  The people who use them are just showing their ignorance.  The F word has lost it's shock value on people.  It's still vulgar, but somehow our tolerance to vulgar language is much higher than our tolerance to racist language.

What?? I have no idea what this means.

I didn't "end up" with a white guy. I don't have an SO right now, and I don't ever "end up" with anyone. You think I'm curious to date a person of a different skin color than my own? Why do you say that?  Where do you get off making judgements about why I date who I date? Do you really think that I care what my family thinks? They haven't liked a lot of my ex's. My parents want me to be happy. If a person of a different race makes me happy, so be it.

Just interested in a little bit more of "you" and not necessarily the post at hand, nonetheless it would tend to aid in understanding your thoughts more clearly by knowing from which platform you speak.

I don't think that you need to understand my thoughts any more clearly that I put them. I'm not some muddled thinker. My posts and comments are well thought out and well written. I don't have a platform. I speak from my heart. And right now, it's a little pissed off about the judgement being made.

It is unfair to assume that that act of genocide was and better or worse than the enslavement of 10 million people. They are two seperate crimes.

I fell for that guy the moment I saw him when I was 16. I'm 19 now. Color doesn't matter and the fact that some people can't grasp that says nothing about who I am. My dad is also 1/2 Native American-1/2 white. He was never called racial names.

It is wonderful to know I have more class than you ever will. Just because people treat you badly doesn't mean you have to come here and trash talk others. Maybe That is why people call you trash. Because you act like something I've stepped in.

My point was obviously way over your overly defensive head.   The point was, your parents gave you life, you repay them with them less than honesty.  I care not the color of the staff you wrap your thighs around in heat.  It changes not a moment in my life, except for these current few.

Whether they enjoy the information you deliver to them or not, at least it will be honest, despite their given opinions, you owe them nothing more but rather, at least that.

Grow up and do not do things that cause you to be overly defensive, it shall surely impair the quality of your life and happiness and add even more confusion to an already overburdened mind.

You are the one calling strangers "fucking lowlife losers" and a "two faced loser cunt." By the way, if you want to insult, spell correctly. If you knew anything about my parents you would know why I don't tell them certain things. Some things are better left unsaid in my family.

Different lifestyles obviously, we were raised to honor our parents.  I would concern myself with obtaining peace of mind rather than a piece of ass. Because that is what you have reduced him to when you hide him, he is a hidden piece of ass you like to call your own, and anonymously so for fear of what others think of you rather than what you think of him.

Now you've gone and succeeded in looking like the ass you articulate yourself to be.

Honor my parents? For what? Making my life miserable because I have to keep something from them? My ass. If I told my dad about my relationship he would probably try to kill the guy and disown me. You call that deserving of respect? Willing to toss your child away because of a view?

I have peace of mind. I don't care what their views are. I LOVE whoever my heart desires. If I wanted ass I'd walk up the street. Maybe one day you'll pull your head out of your ass long enough to grasp that.

Don't worry, I'll take care to cover my own ass, and its best you concentrate more exclusively on yours and do try to keep it from roaming up the street, tough as that may be.

Lets face it, you have known how your parents felt all your life ?  I am sure their beliefs on inter-racial couples comes as no surprise, you've know about it clearly for 19 years.

What you might ask yourself, are you using this young man as a tool to pay your parents back for a perceived wrong and you know full well that this is one exclusive matter that will ignite a wildfire and create a pain in them unmatched by your selfish acts with an inter-racial relationship engineered with a specific and self gratifying feat to pay them back and make them crawl through the dirt like they deserve.

Theres always the likelihood your parents will one day wake free of racial restrains, but the odds are until they do, you'll go on with your secret pet hidden away .  Hark...is that the jiggle of toys in the attic I hear ?   No, .....just fucking bats in your Belfry.

I don't need sex from him or anyone else. I am not using him as a tool. If I wanted to get back at my parents I wouldn't have stuck to this ONE black man. I could have ran around the whole damn town screwing every black, latino, asian guy I found. This guy means the world to me and after all the shit I have been through with him, he will continue to be my world.

As I said before, I don't give a shit about their views. As I said before, they don't know. If I had no intention of telling them how on earth could I be getting them back for anything? And I'd love to know how wanting ME to be happy is a selfish act. It's MY life not theirs.

I agree with honoring one's parents, but at some point an individual grows up and realizes that while they may share some of their parents' values they don't necessarily share all of them. And sometimes the child's morality becomes different than their parents. There's a word for this -- when coupled with adulthood then it's called "growth".

It doesn't mean that you love your parents any less. It just means that you have become a free-thinking person of your own.

At some point, you realize that your parents are imperfect human beings just like you are, with strengths and weaknesses of their own. There is both good and bad to that. On the one hand, you don't worship them like you did when you were young -- a loss of innocence. On the other hand you discover that you can relate to them on a whole different level which is a gaining maturity.
