"WASHINGTON — Stretched thin by four years of war, the Army is adding three months to the standard yearlong tour for all active-duty soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, an extraordinary step aimed at maintaining the troop buildup in Baghdad.

The change, announced Wednesday by Defense Secretary Robert Gates, is the latest blow to an all-volunteer Army that has been given ever-shorter periods of rest and retraining at home between overseas deployments." full article

if west point only makes the 3 most recent decades figures available, it appears that it would be impossible to compare these rates vs the rates from WW2 and vietnam, the comparisons in which i would be most interested in seeing, myself.

I maitain we need to establish the draft again.   It is not fair to ask a small minority of volunteers and their families to shoulder the immense burden of defending this country.  I disagree with some who claim we would inconvience some by asking them to serve their country for two years.  Tough!!  I also disagree with some who think the modern army is too sophisticated to train a high school graduate to squeeze a trigger.  The reason the draft became so hated during the Viet Nam era was simple, we were fighting a war we had no business fighting, just like we had no business invading Iraq.  (See my most recent blog)  before you blast me, then blast me

I suggest that we ask everyone who says that Bush is great and that the war is just to stand up and either go to Iraq themselves or send their son, daughter, grandson or granddaughter to replace the troops who are there.  Isn't the approval rate 30%.  That should be plenty for the surge and for the next 20 or so years.
